Mobile P4 and Random Clock Speeds...

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K35 Laptop with a Mobile p4 3.06ghz. For the past 2 years everything has been and has been running at the full 3.06ghz (according to righting clicking on my computer and then properties etc etc.) I have reformatted my comp many times...Well a couple of days ago I reformatted again and ever since my CPU has been randomly clocking itself anywhere between 1.38ghz and 2.61ghz. (These speeds are all according to Right Clicking on My Computer and then on Properties, also according to WCPUID) It has not once reached the full 3.06. I have gone through all the computers power config settings. This format has been the same as all the others I have done in the past on this computer, nothing different. Except all of the sudden my CPU is going crazy, litterally from second to second drastically changing clock speeds.

So, I reformatted again...same results :(

Any ideas?
 
When it is running something at full CPU utilization (Prime95), does it stay at 3.06? If it does, then you should be ok. It's probably just the speedstep kicking in and off. Same thing happens on my brothers Vaio and I haven't noticed it changing speeds. No noticable effect.
 
Try changing your power options in the control panel. That should tame SpeedStep a bit.
 
I have already tried everything the has been suggested it still just goes crazy. I tried the even when running a program like Counter Strike or Empire Earth it does not reach full speed. I have NEVER had this problem before. When I play the game it is jumpy and slow to the point where I cannot play. Never had that problem.
 
Try reformating again, or check the bios to see if there are any power options in there that are being handled outside of the Windows environment.

I just got done reformatting again....that makes 5 times and NO CHANGE :(

I don't know what to tell you then :(. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
 
it's just speedstep...it's supposed to do that. When you open the system properties you get a "snapshot" of what the cpu clock was when you opened it and depending on what else the system was doing it will vary. What it's doing is fine.

To get a better look at what it's doing run cpu-z and watch the cpu clock speed as you work.

I understand that it is just speed step, but what I do not understand is why it has NEVER in the past 2 plus years done this before. And not only that, but run at speeds I have never seen it run at and why even when playing graphic intensive games it clocks itself down...waaaay down to about 1.38ghz.
 
SpeedStep or Thermal throttling.You might want to check your temps.Higher than 68C means TM1 kicking in.
 
it is probably speed step
just go into your power properties and change it from whatever it is to "Always ON" and change all the drop down boxes to "Never"
then restart
then run a newer program like CPU-Z as WCPUID is dead
and watch the speeds go up and down as u run programs with it
wcpuid only lets u watch the fluctuation by running the real time clock checker or something not on the main window

also did u ever think of downloading all hte drivers from sony? particularly their power management programs which would help you alleviate this problem as its to do with power management
 
Guys, I appreciate all of your input, but I have tried it all already even before I started this thread. The condition is getting worse, my 3.06ghz will now not go above 1.83ghz...no matter what program is running or power settings selected. The CPU fan is running and the computer does not feel any hotter than usual. I just dont know what is going on other than the CPU is dying :(
 
why not try that cpu on a desktop 478 board
it will work and should show u if the cpu is the real cause
board must support prescott 800mhz cpu's and be socket 478pin

Only problem is on a desktop board the multiplier is limited to 12x for whatever reason on the mobile P4's

I know that was true for the 4-m, but is it true for the mobile p4 too?

and its because they dont support speedstep ;)

According to Intel's S-spec finder, they don't have P4-M's over 2.6Ghz. However, Mobile P4's up to 3.33Ghz.

I have a Mobile P4 2.8Ghz (90nm, 1MB, HT) CPU that runs a 14x multiplier on a desktop board. I think the Prescott based mobiles default to 14 instead of 12 like the Northwood mobiles.

erm... i know... i was asking if the mobile p4 has the same problem..

Ah, ok, so same issue? cant modify multi?
 
Can't you wire mod to get the multi you want? Been a while since I looked at this and it was for a mobile Celeron.
 
AFAIK, mobile celerons do not support speedstep, which is why people liked OCing them so much back in the day, as opposed to the mobile p4-m. They had the low voltage of the p4-m without the low multi.
 
well, I've got that P4-M 3.06 Northy too. I think you should probably pick up an S478 board and try it out (it works, the CPU should be mPGA 478). Look at maybe an MSI or something for 60 bucks, or look for something with onbaord sound. Pick up a cheap stick of DDR 400 and test it out. If you've got your comp on always on and it still does that, it might be a motherboard problem. Laptop boards are more prone to screwing up.

I don't know, My motherboard doesn't have a multi option in the BIOS (P4S800D-E). : /
