Mobile CPU Opinions

My old laptop is on its last legs. I use it almost exclusively for DJing on Traktor. Current CPU is an i7 3610QM (Ivy Bridge quad). It is NOT fast enough for the job. I get occasional stutters in the audio output when doing particularly intensive mixes, and even a slight hiccup is intolerable for performances.

The new version of Traktor is extremely taxing on single core performance (a bit on multicore as well - so need at least a quad core). Need maximum single-threaded performance.

Also, this is a business purchase. So need to keep costs down to a minimum. Zero shits given about gaming or basically anything else. Power efficiency not relevant either - this will be plugged into the wall at the clubs at all times. So battery life doesn't matter.

Since single-core performance is absolutely critical, I am likely not interested in a Zen product (unlike my desktop, where the use case is different) unless said Zen product is somehow faster in single-threaded performance - which I doubt.

So this is likely to be an exclusively Intel purchase.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

My last 2 purchases were a Ryzen 2700 based linux box and an Intel 6C / 12T 17inch laptop. I am not at all impressed with the AMD APUs or anything they have in laptops. Maybe when these are 7nm.

For some use cases, a Ryzen APU probably works.

Not for this. Need maximum single core performance. But the lineup of mobile CPUs is damned confusing. I've been browsing cpu.userbenchmark all trying to make sense of the relative performance.

You probably want to look at the 45W mobile CPUs and steer clear of the U, m or Y models (which are in lower TDP classes).

i7-8850H and i7-8750H would be great choices.

What's the budget? I suggest a Clevo P870TM1 with a i7 9700K.

Alienware also as a new Area-51M laptop with i7 9700K or i9-9900K options.

I know you don't care about gaming so you can just choose the lowest tier GPU in these cases.

These are both very big laptops though. So if you're looking for smaller, thinner, lighter, then I agree i7-8750H/i7-8850H are perfect choices.

I think the 8850H will work best. According to benchmarks I've looked up, I can expect ~50% better single core performance and nearly double multi-core performance (mainly because 2 more cores). That should work perfectly. Thanks for the recommendations.

Will be curious how the temps are. I have a 3720QM laptop and I often disable turbo under heavy load to keep it from taking off the runway with its jet fans.

I have gotten to play around with few DTR's that have desktop K CPU's and was amazed at how well they can handle an overclock at load.

Definitely not portable like the MSI you ordered though. Nice price!
