Take a look at what the XDA Developers did with their forums. Instead of joining the Tapatalk group they created their own XDA Premium app. I know Kyle is apparently against using Tapatalk. This is a way to help increase membership, increase revenue to help pay for things, and would provide a REAL mobile version of the forums with an easy to use GUI made for touch screens. I don't know about you guys but most of my time on the forums is on my mobile in the LazyBoy instead of at the desktop......
Please do not point me to the circa 2002 "mobile" version of the site. That would have been nice back when I had a Cingular Windows Mobile phone and limited bandwidth. Today's mobile variants need to be easy to use with one finger on a touch screen device without doing any pinch-zooming or double tapping. We don't care about saving bandwidth when we are paying top dollar for 4G/LTE speeds.
The Premium app can be an annual fee based option, similar to GenMay access. Heck I'd pay $5 for an [H] Premium app for Android/WinPhone/iOS! ....on top of the annual fee for GenMay.
With your own app I would think the security issues with Tapatalk should be addressed but I don't know 100%. I'm thinking that's why the sharp guys over at XDA went that route.
