with a little search on youtube you can see online hacking in fps games is big business. but do most mmos keep hackers out?

its a big game of whack a mole I think. unless if you're SOE, then you let the moles walk right in and take your shit

MMO's do a better job since it is a bit more difficult to hack, plus with hundreds/thousands playing on a server at each time, the chance of coming across someone hacking is greatly reduced as well.

It depends on many factors, but some MMORPG like MapleStory gets exploited frequently. It could be that Nexon is not going a good job, but the gold farmers are using hacks to quickly farm them, apart from other serious exploits like duplicating golds and items, item scrolling exploits and the list goes on.

Hacking is rare in mmo's mostly because in the average mmo eula you agree to some fairly terrible shit. If your a wow player for instance, blizzard is looking at your whole system for the entire time you are on the game. They arent the only ones who do this and so far it seems to be a very effective tactic to stop hacking. That and the fact that with any mmo getting a ban means the loss of a lot of time and money.

Exploits are another story though, once one of those becomes common knowledge you will probably see it a lot until its fixed by the dev team of a particular game.

Most of the gameplay in an FPS is about situational awareness and reflexes / accuracy.

The more you have, the better you are and as it happens, these things are easy to augment with hacks.

On most MMORPG games, you can already see all the enemies and having great reflexes is not generally needed to hit your target. Most hacks are in the form of scripts or bots or macros that make repetitive or mundane tasks easier.

In Guild Wars, there have been a lot of bots that farm certain areas and there have been glitches to dupe items. They have mass bannings from time to time which is amusing. I always assume most of the banned accounts just buy more and try to continue.

It's very frustrating to play FPS games against bots, but what's worse is when people hack your MMORPG account and steal your stuff. That is the first time a game has ever made me angry.

Commie hackers can die screaming.

Shoot man I watched the guys hack WoW all night and day. Warden only catches the "old" hacks. The guys that pay extra for their hacks have a special section of the hacking service to get their wares.

Hacking is just as bad in MMO's, but the impact is a bit less noticeable due to the nature of the MMO game itself. In an FPS, hacking means aimbots, or wallhack. Those are HUGE noticeable short term impacts on gameplay. In MMO's, people use bots mostly to do menial things, gather crafting materials, leech honor in battlegrounds, kill monsters. But there are far more advanced ones out there that will make the level process totally automated. Sounds terrible? It is, but since MMO's have huge worlds, they're not as noticeable as hacks in other game genres. But they're still absolutely terrible.

Like others have said there's more to lose for getting caught on a mmorpg, Despite things like VAC which can level the field in terms of losing stuff (because whole steam account can be banned losing access to all purchased games) I still frequently see counter strike cheaters on a daily basis :(

Asian MMO's have the most problem of all with hackers, mostly because things like Gameguard are rubbish. On the otherhand, games like WoW wheres hacks are openly and freely found will result in a pretty much 100% chance of ban. You can hack freely and fly around at 1000% speed but don't expect to use that account ever again.

Bots aren't what I would consider hacking. There are tons of bots in mmos.

It's the speed/teleport hacks that are the real hacks. They aren't so common because they get banned easily.

I don't consider modifying ingame variables as the only form of hacking. Any bot should be considered a form of hacking. We could argue semantics of comparing a keyboard/mouse macro "bot" to a Glider bot, which automates 1-80 without user interaction, but I don't feel like it.

Bots = Hacking.

You guys are blind if you think there isn't any "hacking" going on in MMOS. I have seen some sick cheats that basically give players god mode. Map hacks (radar) are huge advantage, and hacks that mess with line of sight are pretty powerful.

Its not just bots and macros that are causing problems. Those are borderline... The same shit that is in FPS games exists in mmos and its just as destructive!

You have to be blind to not see hackers in MMOs, I used to glide on WoW and I could easily spot one a mile away now. Not to mention fishing bots, AH bots, speed hacks.

Aion had a shit ton of them. Mostly farmers for mats and items for crafting. I got called a bot a few things though myself.

I made a macro (its macro interface was horrid) that basically just bounced from one node to the next for the mats for mana and hp pots. There was a few spots that you could gather almost endlessly in a loop on a respawn timer and if nobody bothered you, you could farm for hours.
