I just got a 460 today and am in the process of playing some 'musical GPUs'. The 460 has replaced a 260 which is going into rig#2, the 450 will go over to either the server or rig#3 and the 9800GT I was planning on adding to my rig as a PhysX card. Question of the day is can I run both the GPU2 and GPU3 clients at once if I put the -gpu0 and -gpu1 flags in their respective configs? If not maybe I'll just put the 450 in with the 460 and run both on GPU3 clients. I see in the forums that some folks are having grief trying multi-GPU setups, anyone got a success story? If so what are your settings? Moar ppd for the Horde!

yeah you should be able to do it. just make sure that when you install the gpu clients that the main folder in your root folder are different from each other. then follow the same directions for the multi gpu setup. then when you make the shortcuts. make sure the target in the gpu2 client shortcut links to the gpu2 main folder(the one in your root directory), then in the gpu3 shortcut set the target folder to the gpu3 main folder(root directory).

note: ive never tested this but it should work.

I run a 460 and a 275 with no issues at all. You will want to use the -forcegpu flag on each along with the -gpu flag (of course). I used to run separate GPU2 and GPU3 clients but now run both with the GPU3 client (6.40r1) and they run fine.

I've got both GPU2 and GPU3 clients set up in my rig - no issues at all, as monkey said, make your your shortcuts are setup right and you should be good to go.

Or do what tobit has done and run all GPU3.

Thanx Monkey, Tobit, NP. Monkey: that's the way I was thinking of doing it. Tobit: both GPU3? I thought PL was upset with running it on G92s. Do you guys think a OC'd 9800GT is up to snuff for GPU3?

Update: 260 swapped into rig#2 and running GPU2 -big, now hafta decide where to put 450GTS. Seems a shame to put it into a WinXP box with no DX11. Same for WHS box. Hmm, have a Vista Prem x86, maybe talk the wife into letting go of the XP on their box (rig#3) ...

no you can run the gpu3 client on the g92 cards. they have non fermi and fermi only WU's. they dont want us glitching the forcegpu and running fermi WU's on g92 based cards. the g92's still run way better on gpu3 then the gtx 200 cards. i run gpu3 on my 8800GS's. cards run 10C cooler on average. the 9800GT should perform pretty well on the gpu3 client. probably get around the same PPD as you would on gpu2. but i would not run the gtx 260 on the gpu3 client.

Thanx for the info Monkey, I was under the impression you couldn't. So I'm thinking -forcegpu nvidia_g80 will tell the GPU3 client to grab a non-fermi core and I'm good to go. This is good news as I can just simply copy the GPU3 exe to another directory and reconfig it and It'll be set (-gpu0 for the 460 and -gpu1 for the 9800).

the forcegpu_nvidia_g80 was the theory but so far it seems it doesnt work. you could run the -advmethod flag which is a work around to get gpu2 WU's but it also gives non fermi GPU3 WU's as well now. right now its about 75/25% with gpu3 being the higher average vs gpu2 WU's. gtx 260 id for sure only run the gpu2 client. the 9800GT id run the gpu3 WU's. should get roughly the same PPD but the card will run way cooler, uses less video memory, and doesnt effect video playback like the gpu2 client does. right now im doing 5300 PPD with the P11179 gpu3 WU's on my 8800GS's. normally average 4200-4600 on all gpu2(excluding the 10110-12 WU's) and all other gpu3 WU's. so im liking these P11179 WU's.

Nothing is ever easy is it. No worries about the 260 it's already running GPU2. So for GPU3 if force g80 doesn't work just leave it flagless? Does the GPU3 auto detect and run accordingly? I've also got a GTS250 so I'd want to get it setup properly before switching it over to GPU3 as well.

yeah the client has the gpu flags built into it sorda. it knows when your running a fermi card and a non fermi. thats about it. i run the -gpu X flag and thats it. but id test it out running gpu3 on your 9800GT for a couple days. see what WU's you usually get if its more gpu3 or gpu2 WU's and what your avg ppd is then try running the gpu2 client. see what you like best.

the gts 250 id say run gpu2 for now. it loses about 1000-1500 PPD on gpu3 but wfeather would be the one to ask since hes running a 9800GTX which is the same card basically.

Okay, will stay with GPU2 for the 250GTS which I'm going to move into the server box. Funny thing, I updated the drivers in prep for putting the GTS450 into rig#3 midway thru folding a core11, and after the update ppd jumped by 500-600. Guess there were some CUDA optimizations in 260.99's over the 197.45's . Eh, it's only the wife and kids boxen on XP and doesn't get updated as often. I will try the GPU3 on the 9800 tho and as long as I don't lose very many ppd I'll stick with it as I'm VERY interested in the 10C cooler temps you claim to get. Rigs 1,2 and Server boxes are all within a few feet of each other and it gets quite toasty in my mancave. Makes my beer fridge work overtime. Thanx for the pointers ;)

yep the performance increase was in the 258.96 drivers.

to give a comparison on the temps my 8800GS's on a P6600 WU' run 76/78C (bottom/top) @ 48% fan speed. on gpu3 my cards run 73/75 @ 37% fan speed. i can also run a higher overclock on my secondary card as well.
