I have a question regarding SLI and ATI cards. Is it possible to put in 2 different cards into the PCI-E slots? Meaning say you want to have 1 slot that has a card that has dual dvi for 2 flat panels and another PCI-E card for a third flat panel.

I realize with nVidia, they need to be the same cards, but if you're not using the SLI connector, could you put in 2 different cards? Would this work? Is there anyone doing this? What are the issues you've run into? TIA
 
ATi will never support SLI, as SLI is nVidia specific. There is, however, "MVP". The rumor is that ATi's newest chipset (RX480) will allow multiple video processing, & will allow different cards to work together.

Since the 16x PCIe lanes aren't even close to being limited, they've apparently decided to have the data be transmitted across the chipset, with no connector. If, however, there are different cards, ATi will almost certainly require the same Shader Model level on both cards. So, for example, an X800XT will work with a X850XT, but not a R520 with a X850XT (SM2.0b w/ SM2.0b vs SM2.0b w/ SM3.0)

Well to be more specific I'm considering some kind of X800 with dual DVI ports on one PCI-e slot and another All-in-Wonder card in the other slot. As of yet, the only PCI-e All-in-Wonder I believe is an X600. Whether they work together or not is not important to me as I'm not much of a gamer. What I want to do is drive 3 different resolution flat panels. So for that I would ideally like at least 3 dvi ports. I would also like to be able to record video.
 
You can put two diffrent cards in two PCIe slots.
No they wont use SLI but I dont think you wanted that in the first place right?
[H]ardOCP had a link to another site that put a 6800U and a X800XTPE in two PCIe slots and used them (no not together) to play diffrent game or display on diffrent monitors.
