Quick question, What would you guys say is the minimum cpu that should be used to fold? I have access to about 40 pentium 2 300 MHz, but yesterday when I hooked up one and let it start folding it was taking forever and when I figured out how long it would actually take it was some where around 750 hours. My next question is, is there a way to only get small protiens so that I dont go over the time limit set by stanford (3 weeks i think it is)

Thanks

AcidTone

When doing the config setting, go to the advanced options, and set timeless WU's (WU Without deadlines)

that should help some ;)

300mhz, while not super fast is still ok... some people are using 233's

im still trying to get my 150 working..

http://www.hardfolding.com/index.php?go=4

console version would be the way to go, graphical would take too many cpu cycles me thinks

This page has information on configuring the console client to use timeless units. Depending on your situation, and whether or not the power is paid for, those boxes aren't going to be very efficient.

Well im gonna set a few of em up at work and let em chug away. Im the network admin so no one will say any thing about them going.

In that case set them all up!

I thought about it but i have limited switch space and power resources atm. I have also found a couple 500 MHz machines that im gonna scalp some ram for, and set them up.

You could ship them to marty9876, he always appreciates more crap. :p He's got plenty already.

I cant send them out property of my work. They are being sold some time in the near future to school employees but we havent come up with a plan to sell em yet. So while they are here im gonna put em to work.

I run timeless WUs on my dual PII 266 machine (when it's working). This is on WinXP with 256 meg of RAM and two clients running. If it is mostly undisturbed the two processors will put out about 100-130 points per week. It's not much but a few more such systems will add up, especially over time. I eventually plan on turning it into a file server or something which is one reason why I run it. That and I just happened to have some of the parts given to me and I've never had a dually before. Even though it is very obsolete it still runs WinXP rather smoothly with the dual processors. One of these days I will find a way to get a dually Opteron rig. Hopefully dual cores also. That will be fun.

Im just gonna throw a 98 base ghost image on them then install F@H throw them in my cable closet at the bottom of the rack configue em and let em go. Hopefully it will give me a few extra points a week. :D

Well Some guy is sending me a p2 400 mhz, I plan to fold with it. Slap Linux in, And bam.

Speaking of, where has Marty been lately?

Not sure i have more crappers for the crapper farm and he still hasn't gotten back to me about shipping them off.

I really got to read all these dang threads. Who knows what you all are signing me up for!

AcidTone- Crappers (anything less then 1 gzh in most folks books) suck. But they do fold, set to timeless is they are non SSE chips (not P3's). OK, reread post they are 300's. Timeless WU's all they way. I'll post PPD from one of mine at the end here.

Spectre- Yea, still need to work this out. I'm working on the mother of all crapper hook up's, more to come hopefully.

Hito- I'm here somewhere.

This is a 350 P2 I think on timeless-

if you're a network admin, why not net-install on every computer at your workplace, claiming you're testing "network/hardware stability" if questioned?

just start saying something technical, it can even be wrong, like "i need to ensure the data transfer rates of the various NICs can handle full-throttle traffic" (absolute bullshit)...your boss wouldn't know...would he/she? ;)

I have not used this one yet but "Well I need to run them so the caps on the motherboards don't dry out"

Never mind the fan usage on PSU and CPU ect.

I would love to do this, but im already doing this on my own time after work so ill stick with the puters we have laying around that dont need upkeep. But I did make a nice discovery yesterday while cleaningout my office found 4 p3 866Mhz with various amounts of ram, so im gonna hook up those and a couple of the 300's and get em folding.
:D

nice find! Feel free to let that addiction continue! :D

Keep on Folding!!

This is most likely posted some where but is there a time per WU difference between windows and Linux?

Stanford benchmarks at 1.63 Points per Hour per Ghz on an Intel 2.8 Ghz box running Linux.
My AMD's MP's under Windozes will normaly run at between 1.6 & 2 Points per Hour per Ghz depending on the protien, Opterons between 0 & 50% faster than this, normal is around 15%.
Most Tinkers have always folded at 100% faster on an AMD boxen.
And big packet WU will fold at 100% faster as well.

How much the gain is from Linux -> Windozes and how much from Intel -> AMD I dont know.
Some could even be from bad benchmarking.
But my understanding is that the latest Linux client folds at around the same speed as the Windozes one. May be only a few precent slower, but again I think it all depends on exactly with protien you are folding.

Luck........ :D

Well I got one of the P3 866's up and folding on my lunch break, and the first protien is a 234 pointer and it is gonna take over a week to fold :D good thing im just gonna throw it in a closet and let em go :D

I know ive got an old P2 266 with 128 megs of ram
that is used as a print server for the many printers in
my household, and it runs folding just fine.

Not very fast, but its on timeless units etc.
but if its already runnin, its all good.
