evening. im currently looking into buying a mini itx computer for a friend of mine :).Here are some parts i picked out, are there any parts i could swap out or should completely change?
*specs.
cpu:Intel Core i5 3470
motherboard:ASUS P8H77-I Mini ITX Motherboard
ram:Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 $69
HDD:Western Digital WD Blue 500GB WD5000AAKX $59
Case:Bitfenix Prodigy Mini-ITX Case Storm $89
Antec High Current Gamer 520W Modular HCG-520M $99
and a 7870. not sure which one is the best bang for buck... any ideas? i was looking at the twin frozer but no where has it :D hahaha *sarcasm* ;)

You need to ask a mod to move this to either General Hardware or Small Form Factor Systems.

It would also help us if you answer the GenHard sticky questions. Any recommendations we make will be based off your responses.

ram: C9 is too high for 1600, try samsung, they're very tweakable, or other.
hdd: go with WD RE/RE4 if you can, they're fast, or black.

Everything looks good to me. For a few more bucks, I'd try to upgrade the 7870 to a 7870xt tahiti le.

Good god, ram prices have ballooned.

CL9 RAM is fine, especially since the OP can't overclock with the i5-3470 processor. In this case, it makes more sense to not spend extra money on DDR3 1600 RAM versus DDR3 1333 -- just ensure that the RAM voltage level is 1.5V or less.

Western Digital's RE/RE4 and Black series are overpriced (IMO) for everyday home use. I personally never saw a noticeable performance boost from using the WD Black HDDs over the WD Blues. If you (or the OP) really want to spend money on performance, you should be looking at a 120- to 256GB SSD like the Samsung 840 Series (or, better yet, the 840 Pro) for your primary/OS drive.

its fine for 4gb sticks @1600? oook then *derp*

says the guy who uses seagate drives, you sure seem to have real world experience on that subject, *derp*

Funny guy....

What the OP has chosen for his RAM and HDD are fine. If he decides to spend any more money in either area, I believe that he should grab a 1TB drive for a little more than a 500GB drive.

As for the Seagate versus Western Digital "debate," in my personal experiences, they're both fine. Again, if performance is a priority, I believe that an SSD is the way to go.

I second the 7870xt (Tahiti LE) instead of a regular 7870 (Pitcairn). The Powercolor 7870 EZ is $229AR right now at Newegg. Should clock to around 1100mhz on the core with no memory adjustment (not a very good memory clocker). Bang for the buck, somewhat faster than the regular 7870 for a few bucks more.

thanks. i dont think i would even try, these days i'm more like just giving a suggestion and if the person fail to comprehend, fuck it, if fucktardo wants to do things his way why should i care? its not on my pc ;)

Where are you buying from?
What's your budget (or, the most you're willing to spend on this system)?
What resolution? Which games? What level of visual quality?

As for parts suggestions:
- Swap out the 500GB WD Blue for the 1TB model (or the new Seagate Barracuda, if cheaper)
- Consider the 7870XT over the "plain" 7870
- I can't find the HCG-520M in stock... consider one of the Seasonic M12II PSUs instead

whoops i forgot about this thread... i decided to wait for haswell so i can get...
CPU:4670K $250
MOBO: any mini-itx one *that allows oc'ing clearly*
RAM: any 8gb 1600mhz kit. (might pick up 16gb not to sure yet)
PSU:antec 520-M
CASE: bitfenix proidgy
HDD: 1tb WD.
SSD:samsung 840 128gb
GPU: sapphire 7950.
(if their is room for a cooler master hyper 212 on the board i will fit it on,otherwise a thermaltake watercooler is going in their and i will mount the rad to the top of the case :)
all up it will cost around the $1200-$1300 right now :)

If what they are saying about Haswell is correct, you might be better off with one of those AIO watercoolers in the prodigy case. I don't know if a 212 will cool it.

Haswell seems to have a similar max oc as ivy (pre-delid). Op has nothing to worry about.

A hyper 212 should be good enough for at least 4.2.

did some reaserch. i will be dropping to just *4670* since they are 3.4ghz standard clock
which can turbo up to 3.8ghz :) so i dropped the K saved like $10 then tossed away the cooling idea and saved from $35-100 depends if i went water or air cooling.

Save a bit more money and drop down to the i5-4570 instead. It has a stock clock of 3.2GHz and can Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz. You won't notice the loss of 200MHz in your everyday tasks.

Again, where are you buying parts from? I ask because NewEgg, which is the default location for many [H] members, only has three Socket 1150 mini ITX boards in stock at this moment. Depending on your patience level, or your budget, you may want to consider micro ATX boards instead.

If gaming is the most resource-intensive task for this system, you don't need more than 8GB of RAM. Since you're not overclocking, stick with a low profile dual-channel kit of DDR3 1600 RAM. (Example: Corsair Vengeance or G.Skill Ares). Prices have been steadily increasing on DDR3 RAM in general over the past few months.

One more time: Where are you buying your parts from? I don't feel comfortable making a slew of recommendations when I don't know whether or not your "favorite" retailer has them in stock
