Ok i have a sever i made out of a old p4 3.2, and it just isent cutting it any more and im looking to upgrade in neer future im thinking of a Core2Duo. im not looking to overclock and i would like it to run fairly cool with an appropriate heatsink and fan setup wial keeping it fairly silent. What do you guys suggest?

P.s Server is used for a mild webserver / mysql / ftp / and a home file storage / transfer box

P.P.s Thoughts on new mid range C2D's or an older highend used one? Also server is running FreeBsd

P4 3.2 not cutting it for that? That is way overkill for what you need it for.. you could be running those services off of an old pentium 2.

FreeBSD is a very lean system, it doesnt require any serious computing power.. and a C2D seems to be a waste just for mild webserving and ftp??

Can you explain why its not cutting it?

edit: If you want quiet, replace the power supply with one with a low speed 120mm fan (antec?) .. and throw a Zalman 9500 on there, turn it to low, call it a day.. nice and quiet.

I agree, that CPU does seem way overkill for a simple server. My old server was a AMD 1.8 something or other, and the only reason I replaced it was I switched to a NAS BOX to save power. I was just running XP PRO on it.

What issue are you seeing? Maybe a memory upgrade or new drives are what you need.

Don

I've been working with him and his server.. I know one reason is it just runs too hot. The system requires too much cooling.

I believe it's an old board too and uses ddr.

I know my AMD 3500+ seems alot smoother than that old p4.

Yeah something definitely doesn't sound right. My P3 866Mhz does all of that with no problem.

So a little clarification on your problem would help. Also, please list out the specs of your current server as well.

It's a real experiment server.. compiling alot of stuff, just seems to take a lot of time.

Depending on what you are compiling it can take some time.

Unless you are really hitting this sucker hard with mysql I'm susprised you are having issues unless it has some other hardware issue.

hello. The rest of specs off the top on my head generic DDR 400mhz I thing 1gig more spec when I get home

Edit home now: Mobo is a Ga-8ipe-1000 Pro-G

Proc is S-478

Ram is generic ddr 400

400 watt psu

So lets say a c2d wasent overkill for this server, what would you guys suggest?

At under $200, the E8500, E8400 or Xeon E3110 (essentially the same as an E8400) are easy choices. On an LGA 775 server board with onboard video and dual Gb LAN such as the Tyan S5211 or ASUS P5BV-C.

Well what exactly are you doing with this server? Magice has said you do compiling on the server? What are you compiling on the server?

So please tell us exactly what this server is doing and why the P4 is no longer cutting it.

Oh and what 400W PSU do you have?

If its running too hot, slap a Zalman 9700 on it, turn it to low.. and watch the temps drops 15 degrees.. call it a day.

1 gig is more than enough for a FreeBSD box... so is the 3.2 GHz, and 2Mb L2 cache.. stick with it.. dont waste money on something new just to have it do the exact same thing this box is doing now..

If anything, for what you're doing, you hsould be looking at those 80$ atom pc's .. theres an article on toms hardware about it.. that would be perfect.. cheap, efficient, and lower power consumption.

psu came with case, branded Raidmax

I use an Intel D201GLY2 mini-ITX board as my home server, it only has a 1.2 Celeron and it is able to completely saturate my network connection when serving up files. OS is FreeNAS which is a FreeBSD variant.

Of course, I am not using it to compile anything. If you're going to be doing serious compiling, then you'll want something with some horsepower. How about a Q6600? They are quad core and reasonably priced.
