Looking for some comments on this build.


1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

Yes, though raid and firewire not so much

Windows 7 64 bit pro is the choice here

I have the other stuff to go with it, but I just want to get some opinions on where this build it headed. It's for my 17 year old son to use for the purposes stated. My biggest question was the power for the psu and if/when we add a second 6970, will I be pushing enough power?

This is the case of his choice.

I cannot recommend any AMD CPU above $200 now these days considering the greater price to performance value of the Core i5 2500K and the Core i7 2600K CPUs. I highly highly recommend waiting a few more days for the official release of those CPUs and get the Core i5 2500K as well as the higher-end P67 motherboards.

As for the RAM, I recommend this RAM as you won't notice a difference with that more expensive RAM over this:
$90 - G.Skill Ripjaws F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM

Oh and for HD 6970 2GB Crossfire, I would recommend at least a 850W PSU like the Corsair 850TX. However the Antec TP-750 is fine for a single HD 6970.
 
If you're going for "mild gaming" you could probably go with a 6950 instead and pocket the $100 difference, especially considering the 6950 unlocks. I'd prefer to throw the money at a SSD personally.
 
I am not opposed to the 1090t (but I am a biased AMD fanboy), But spending 200 dollars on an MSI board I am most certainly opposed to.

To maintain the same performance as what you have listed here is what I would buy..

Flash the bios on the 6950 to a 6970 & your completely on par with what is arguably a better motherboard..

Shipped total of 1017 (then 60 back in MIR) compared to your original list of 1152.. You can use the difference & get a small SSD to boot from and take advantage of the extra performance.
