Migrating non-virtual images

Hi,
I'm looking at expanding my setup at home and taking advantage of virtualization in doing that (leaning towards VMWare). A key issue for me is migrating my main PC from Win XP to Windows 7 and not losing data in the process - this PC is highly configured and loaded.

A question that comes to my mind, given that I plan on virtualizing, is whether I can easily, or should I say feasibly, migrate my Win XP PC build to a virtual image and use that as a basis / template to cross check configs and app provisioning on the new Windows 7 build (which I do expect to be virtual).

Is this kind of migration possible (physical to virtual OS)? And if it is, what are the pre-requisites, ie. are the software requirements non-free.

This is exactly what i was planning on doing as well. Just got XP mode set up on my fresh W7 install yesterday. Is there any way to load the image i made with Acronis of my old xp setup into W7 VM or should i just invest in a copy of vmware?
 
VMware Converter 4.0 can convert existing Acronis .tib images to VM's. Once you convert it, use VMplayer to launch the VM in Win7 or invest in VMware Workstation 7 to have all the options needed to customize the VM
