Mighty No. 9

^ Ahh, sorry, that response was to Freaky, not you :)

I don't have any mud to throw

Again, the suggest was FINE to me, I don't mind non-gender specific roles, that's fine. But her coming on, lying about the MM thing at first, turning around, locking her twitter and deleting posts than claiming she was "attempting to separate her personal and work life" was a load of crap.

Do I have a problem with her, no, do I have a problem with certain things she has said, yes, am I throwing mud around about it, no, not really at all.

Mod, I don't mind nepotism either, it happens, its a part of life, but if she used that as her in to than say, spread an agenda, is what is bothersome.

So, you admit it's just some petty personal mud flinging? Didn't she clarify later that she played MMX onwards, just not the "classics" much? I think including some people NOT familiar with every speck of a franchise is a good thing, to gain some perspective on things.

I don't think people were very concerned with the fact she played the MM games or not. But it seemed like she lied, and people inquired and called her out on it... then instead of going, oh I meant this or that, she started banning and locking up her twitter.

I'm not that familiar on this subject though, so I might be wrong. I only found out about it after the fact.

Its not a concern anymore, I just want to know when I can get my frakken game!

I just hope the physics aren't floaty on release, the current gameplay look sgood though. I want it crisp and responsive like Mega Man X.

The movement is definitely less elegant than original megaman, No 9 reminding me of a drunk raging taurus. Maybe it feels better first-hand *shrugs*

Depends on what you are expecting. If you're looking for a modernized Megaman game, I'd say it's spot on.

Eh, sorta. I haven't played it but based on video it looks kind of like a modern Mega Man while also kind of failing to hit what made the good MM games special. The game just looks so soulless. From the terrible, generic cellphone game look of the world to the designs and even the action. It's like the developers know what Mega Man is supposed to be but they have no passion for it, no love for the franchise and are just doing it because it's steady work. You can still look at the best MM games, even the old NES ones, and just see why they were fun. You can see the care that went into crafting everything. I don't get that feeling from MN9.

I'm a little more optimistic than this, and slightly more forgiving, but I do agree somewhat, and especially about the classics. There is definitely magic to them. The first three or four on the NES, (especially 3 for me) X and X2, and Rockman+Forte would be the most memorable for me. These ones just oozed style, polish, love, etc.

I'll reserve judgement on the controls/tightness for now.

You know, the game closest to being a modern version of Megaman (mixed with maybe Wizards and Warriors) is Shovel Knight. That game absolutely NAILS what we're talking about here.

I loved how Megaman had tons of these frickin huge baddies. I don't see much of that in MN9

Even the earliest ones did. They were great! The bouncing piston guys, the big bubble-headed spring guys, the one-eyed monster boss, loaders, etc. Good stuff! Plus, the music was HUGE. I haven't heard what the music is like on MN9.

MN9 is supposed to be a spiritual successor to MMX more than the earlier ones. I'm also waiting to hear more about the music. Because MegaMan music made some of those games.

I've been half-assedly following this game for a bit, and have seen some screenshots that looked promising. I knew the idea behind the game obviously as well. However, after watching that video... Hmmm... I agree with many of the sentiments above that it lacks the soul of Megaman. Based on what I'm seeing here, I'd much rather be playing A.R.E.S. for those familiar with the game. (2.5D robo game.)

You know, the BIG HUGE Bosses in the original games never showed up till you got to Wiley's castle.
You know, the FINAL STAGE.

Why would they show the final bosses and stages before release? Thats not common at all. Not sure why some of you expect that. Every MM and X games has big hulking bosses, but not till the end.

We weren't just talking about bosses. There were plenty of large enemy characters in all the levels. The REALLY huge ones were in Dr. Wiley's stages, but I'm not even seeing larger sized normal enemies in the video I watched. Like the big pogo-ing piston-bots, giant bubble-head on a spring things, floating propeller head things, big loader robots with hard-hats, etc. etc. (those are just the ones that spring to mind) They were ones that you'd have to slide under, jump on disappearing platforms to get over, or you'd have to blast them a ton and learn a pattern to get by them. There were quite a few in the older games. Some were incorporated into the level design (most likely to save on sprite-counts on the NES) like the big snakes / snake heads in Snake Man's level for example. Still though, there were a lot of big things happening. Very animated backgrounds too, spinning, whirring, flashing, etc.

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong when more footage, or the actual release comes out, and if it looks a bit more lively, animate, polished, BIG, etc. then I'll happily buy a copy. It just doesn't look like it was brought-to-life the same way the older ones were. (so far)

Another example (also Capcom as it happens) that I can think of to compare this to is Strider and Strider EX. Strider was a gorgeous, highly animated 2D sprite based game. Everything was big, detailed, beautiful. Strider EX (arcade 2.5D game) paled in comparison. Sure it had pseudo 3D backgrounds, but it was largely devoid of the same life that the original had. I get a similar feeling from MN9. It could end up better than I think, and I'm not trying to put the game down, but from what I watched earlier today, it could be quite a bit better.

Also, Shovel Knight appears quite a bit more polished than this is at the current time. Shovel Knight is pretty much perfect in every conceivable way, except maybe it could have been a little bit longer. I'd give it a 10/10. I'm going to go hunt down more footage (if it exists) for MN9 though. Maybe that video was early footage, or not the greatest level or something.

Hehehe, actually, I just proved myself wrong. The video and screen shots on Steam look way more interesting than what's in the video posted above IMO. The game could turn out pretty well.

Seems that a XBOX employee posted wrong information into the store page announcing a delay for the game. Twitter blew up, but it's been fixed now. So if you see reports that the game has been delayed again it was a mistake. Hopefully.
Mighty No. 9 may have been delayed until December

Twitter posts so you can read all the sad people who only got the bad news and didn't see the revision.

The real problem is that the game is mediocre (imo) despite a huge budget.

It's actually a very small budget. Battlefield games have a huge budget, this is a tiny fraction of that. And I don't know how you can say the game is mediocre if it hasn't come out yet.

They've released levels to backers which you can easily find if you look around. The movement feels very off, like it's too loose or something. It doesn't feel like it has the tight controls of the Megaman games. The design of the levels is fairly bland, they don't exactly seem great. And, quite frankly, the game itself just doesn't look good. Not just from a graphical perspective, but the art style they picked makes it look like any of a hundred or so Unity titles you see all the time. The concept video they used to sell the game looked so much better. I said last year that just looking at videos of the game made it feel so soulless. Playing what they've shown off so far really emphasizes that. It just feels so by the numbers and passionless.

That's the crux of promising too many tiers during a Kickstarter. Star Citizen will never live up to expectations because it promised too many moving parts also. Then toss in deadlines with crying fans boohooing at a delay, and you end up with a soulless shell of a game.

Swiss Army Knives are great for saving you in a jam. They suck for open heart surgery. Fans are expecting that level of detail in all facets of the game.

Indeed. Something similar happened to Broken Age. Broken Age still turned out well but I can't shake the feeling that it probably would have been a better game if they hadn't added so many stretch goals. If they'd taken all the money they get and put it all towards their initial concept.

Yea, it would've looked something like this:

new_ui_2.png

...and this game is made possible in part thanks to backlash from the Double Fine Adventure

So, maybe something this...

...will become a reality from the backlash of how Might no. 9 is turning out...

This is one of the big banes for games for me. It's why I couldn't get into Just Cause 2 like so many seemed to. It looked great and stuff but his floaty movement was something I could not get out of my head when I played.

New update today. Launching on all non portable systems June 21-24 depending on your location. It's gone gold, so that's s hard date.

I think this is how most individuals feel about this project at this point:

Honestly, I had such high hopes for this project, but after three years of waiting, and the repeated delays, lack of announcements, and all the other unprofessionalism from Comcept in general, I feel more badly for those who have backed and haven't received anything yet.
There are a lot of people who still haven't received the e-mail questionnaire, let alone the plush/T-shirt which was sent out; it was good of them to at least do that, but what about all of the other rewards for those who backed more?

This is really starting to feel like the Ouya console kickstarter, only on steroids.
Keiji Inafune did some really cool stuff in his youth, but in the last decade or so, has really lost sight of what the fans wanted.

Mega Man Legends 3 was great, but he pushed his boundaries with Capcom.
If he treated Capcom the same way he has treated his loyal fans and backers on Kickstarter, then I can see why they let him go so quickly and scrapped all of his projects.

Very unfortunate.

I don't feel like he's a conman unless he intentionally deceived and wasn't going to release it and used his money in other things. Afaik, there hasn't been any news/evidence of that. What he is, is incompetent and unprofessional. He did do good stuff with the megaman series, there's no denying that in my eyes, but maybe that's all he's got. A one trick pony, as it were.

Average decent game takes about 5 years to make. Since this one is only taking 3; I'm concerned that the quality might not be there.

I don't think there is a time specification on how long it needs to be good. I mean, more time usually means more work on it, butits hardly a requirement. Look at FTL.

Some games are made in less time of course.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warshaw intended the game to be an innovative adaptation of the film, and Atari thought it would achieve high sales figures based on its connection with the film, which was extremely popular throughout the world. Negotiations to secure the rights to make the game ended in late July 1982, giving Warshaw only five and a half weeks[2] to develop the game in time for the 1982 Christmas season. The result is often cited as one of the worst video games released and was one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming history. The game's commercial failure and resulting effects on Atari are frequently cited as a contributing factor to the video game industry crash of 1983.

So you're saying a bad game was made using 5 and a half weeks, so a good game would need 5 years?

I was just being sarcastic earlier because everyone was so negative. Then I couldn't help posting E.T..

Sowwy. :)

He's a producer and game director. That's the problem with getting so caught up in the idea that a game can be one person's vision and one person's accomplishment. Inafune has ideas and he's probably very passionate but without the right people to back him all of that is useless. The team he has simply isn't up to the tasks given to them and the game got far too bloated from it's original idea that they're trying to do too much. Like, seriously, who the fuck was clamoring for multiplayer outside of Inafune himself?

Yea that multiplayer bid was weird... but that's the new generation, or so it seems....

I see... I couldn't detect the sarcasm in the first post. Oh well, what ever, it's hard to transmit through written language anyway.

I like when developers take their time to do it right personally. I'd be disappointed if they rushed it out due to fan imposed deadlines. I'm a proponent of Valve / Blizzard time. Just show me once in awhile what you're working on to make my experience better and I'm happy.
