You're quite welcome. I apparently hit a nerve. BTW, please don't use direct quotes for something I didn't phrase in that way. I did say "muddled" (it was), asked if it was hurriedly done, and never said "poorly edited". You're taking three separate posts and putting them together.Steve said:a.) Thank you for your input on our "hurriedly done, poorly edited, muddled" article.
Check your math Steve. MS is *NOT* shipping a million consoles to the US. Business Week has stated "Although there is no official figure, analysts have pegged the initial shipment in the U.S. as somewhere between 400,000 and 700,000 units." None of the stores received the numbers from what they expected from MS, thus to get a XBox 360, you had to wait in line for several hours. If you didn't get one last night, no one is sure when the next shipment is coming. To top it off, MS is stretching their limited supply to Europe on Dec. 2nd and Japan Dec. 10th. Chris Liddell, Microsoft's chief financial officer, told analysts last month that the worldwide Xbox 360 supply should catch up to demand sometime in the first half of next year. I didn't say it was a paper launch. My exact quote was "HardOCP makes a big deal about paper launches and availability". I am saying that the MS allocation strategy causing low availability should be questioned.Microsoft is said to be (by all news accounts) shipping a million consoles at launch...divide that number by the 295 million people in the U.S. ...some people will go without. Even if they only hit half that number... shipping every console you have (500,000 to 1 million) does not = paper launch.
The "It is only DAY 1" comment, I'm not sure that holds true for you. It is for the general public, but I suspect you've had this unit for longer. That goes back as to how [H] obtained the review unit and how long you had to do this evaluation.PLEASE remember, these are evaluations, not editorials. It is only DAY 1...there is plenty of time for the "OMG the Xbox 360 <insert whatever>" editorials.

The reason I asked about how you obtained the XBox 360 (which wasn't answered by you) was to ascertain how much time you had to review the console. It's been the position of HardOCP in the past to take time with reviews and get it right, rather than get it first. All I'm asking is for more information on the review process on this particular console before I pass judgement.

Steve, don't take this the wrong way, but the evaluation was just average. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular either. With an important product launch, I expected better from [H]. You've raised the bar and expectations. Would you want anything less? After the past stellar reviews, editorials and evaulations this article isn't quite as good. That's all.
Kyle wanted some feedback and constructive criticism and I've given it to you.
blindhope said:Quick question:
Steve do you plan to update interoprability with Windows Media connect to give some readers some idea of what they can expect (PIcs & Music for sure Video streaming not so sure) & also its interoperability with Windows MCE these are highly touted features & I am sure a lot of people would love to know. I for one would love to know if this would work for streaming vid from XP Pro (however sounds like MCE is needed) or would I be better of with a D-link DMR.
Hope you can help out & good preview BTW
Torgo said:Forgot to mention one other thing. My bad, it was late and I didn't include this comment. I thought the article really hit it's stride on the 3rd page of the article, but it got muddled in a few places because of your edits Kyle. I know that Steve is in Alaska and you're here in Plano Kyle. But the edit (hurriedly done I assume) talking about BB in Plano while keeping it in the first person really screwed up a lot of people into thinking that Steve wrote the whole thing. Obviously he didn't.
It's also not clear how the XBox 360 was obtained. (Maybe it was, I'm a bit tired). Was it one of the review kits that MS sent out a few days early or did you purchase it at a store? Again, the BB paragraphs give this confusion out.
Oh yeah, you did mention after 130 tickets were handed out, Best Buy was turning away people from getting in line. I'm glad it was mentioned in the article, but the ow allotments should play a larger factor into your review. HardOCP makes a big deal about paper launches and availability. Why wasn't that made a larger issue? Three sentences and that's it?
Steve said:I plan a number of Xbox 360 articles covering that and more. We are only days away from the launch of the new site. including [H]Console.
bruenor said:I'm not trolling, or flamebaiting, but honestly that review was very "review-lite" and doesn't hold much real value.
Prim3 said:So you saying, that the Fact SONY never had to have something cover its ass and still go into the red from selling consoles becuase it couldn't compete unless it did? HAs anyone here actually looked at the market hold they MS has in Japan for the console wars?
EDIT: I really can't wait to see what sony has to offer to fight Live... That's all the box has going for it is live, that's it, nothing else even impressed me about the system consider half the games were eventually moved over to all consoles or PC. Hopefully Halo 2 wont be a shitty port and maybe will be fun to play on the pc.
(I am really getting sick of all this xbox360 hype. I wish Sony would stop being quiet)
bruenor said:No offense, but that was as sugar coated and superfluous a review as I have seen in some time. I've been a console/game reviewer and playtester for over 4 years. I'm sorry, but that "review" seems to be very light on actual facts and filled with marketing and hype quotes from MS. These are the kinds of reviews I tend to see from first-time reviewers who are so happy to get a game or a system for free that they gush over them rather than being objective in any way.
I'm not trolling, or flamebaiting, but honestly that review was very "review-lite" and doesn't hold much real value. The marketplace system is overpriced with a piss-poor pricing scheme in place and it was given a golden pass. Two games were covered, the only two that have any "legs" and of them PGR3 is the only top title. Kameo really equates to a button masher and will not hold up once the hype and shine wears off. The system is still large and the power requirements are pretty obscene for a system that is to be left on 24/7 as a media center. Over 200W and heat issues are a concern no matter who you are. I'm not bashing the 360 either, just pointing out the cons that just so happened to be LEFT OUT of this "review" so conspicuously.
In general, yes they are lite. But this is HardOCP. This isn't Day One for HardOCP since this is one of the review kits, so I know that it's been a few days in the hands of the reviewers. As others have pointed out, the case wasn't even cracked open. Now, that may be because the unit needed to be shipped back, but an explanation on why it wasn't done (as it was with the Phantom console for example) would have headed off any such comments. The worst part is that the expectation was set up in the opening paragraph that stated "On November 17th, 2001, the day the original Xbox launched we were the first Web site to completely disassemble the console and give you a firsthand look at the inside of Microsoft’s new console." So on November 22nd, 2005, it wasn't opened nor any photos of a nekkid console were shown. Going back and re-reading the Sneak Peek written in May shows it's a much better article than the one done last night. The Sneak Peek at least had one nudie shot of the innerds.Rich Tate said:And you don't feel that console launches in general are a bit "lite"?

bruenor said:Like was said the PS2 did ship with 30 titles, the 360 isn't even close and there were a number of very good launch titles on the PS2.
bruenor said:The cost of development for the 360 is very high and the timeframes are longer than ever before, that means that the total number of releases over the lifespan of the system will be unprecedentedly low with long lag times of no releases. This is the one area everyone is glossing over and it drives me crazy. Also with such high costs you can be sure only "safe" titles see daylight, and this is NOT a good thing for any real gamer. King Kong's and movie licenses and other formulaic titles will grow old quickly, graphics only go so far.
Rich, it happened the first time four years ago in the first 24 hours as the new evaluation pointed out. Add to the fact that the 360 has been in reviewers hands for more than 24 hours (going on the assumption [H] received theirs on or around Friday like most other press) so it was more than possible.Rich Tate said:I'd say you can expect a very in depth review and pictorial of the inside. A review of this magnitude does not materialize in 18 hours. I anxiously await your review on the 360.

Secondly, an editor should rise above the fray and not take a cheap shot with a comment "I anxiously await your review on the 360". C'mon Rich. PM me or stick with Kyle's and Steve's last comments along the lines of "Thank you for your feedback". I have a hunch that Kyle disagrees with me, but he'll take it up with me personally later.
If you really want my review of the 360, I'll give you one. Just give me a review unit, since I don't think that MS is going to make many more shipments available. I'm more than up for the challenge.

bruenor said:I wasn't bashing the 360 and I made that clear, what I am not so pleased with was the review. It was very much like a plug and much unlike a fair and unbiased review. I'm sure they've had this system for quite some time, as I've had access to one for about three or four weeks now. I think everyone here is pretty much saying the same thing. The article was too lite on in-depth information and too full of MS quotes and really just sunshine and lolipops.
In any review you really need to cover some down sides, nothing is perfect and by NOT doing that you come off as a happy schoolboy smitten because he has a new toy. Like I said, i'm not detracting from what was said.. except the game reviews, those were abysmal. Kameo is not that good, to make the claims that were made you must have not been playing the same game as me or many others. It is a plain button masher. PGR3 is decent, but also not quite the be-all-end-all in graphics or play. It is the best of whats available, and whats available ain't much. Like was said the PS2 did ship with 30 titles, the 360 isn't even close and there were a number of very good launch titles on the PS2.

I've played 2 full version games (PGR3 & Call of Duty) and both had no AA at all.Steve said:I never played the demo disk, only retail versions of the game. Our consoles and games looked great.
The only complaints I have heard about no AA or poorly implemented AA is from peope who played the demo disk at a store kiosk.
It just stands to reason that If everyone else says the graphics are great except for people who played the demo on a store kiosk, couldn't it be the demos?
