Microsoft Xbox 360 @ [H]

I surely hope Sony comes out with Playstation Online and has everything live has to offer but cost 0 a month.
Nintendo has pledged free online play for their games.

$400 + 100 for wifi = the same as a $500 PS3 (rumoured projected pricepoint)
PS3 and Rev will include the wifi, I don't know MS didn't put a chip in there - are they that expensive? Even the $120 DS has a wifi chip.

Sony's PS3 will feature free online play for most games (like the PS2) because it's using the exact same decentralized system as the PS2 (yuck). Nintendo's will be central, similar to XBox Live, but probably not as good. But nobody knows for sure, yet, the exact details of the projects :)

hrm... i'm stickin with the computer upgrade. bring on the revolution.
I'm curious to see how that revolution controller will work out. I like the fact that there are already roves of haters out there, and hardly anyone has touched it, let alone actually play with it. :p

No offense, but that was as sugar coated and superfluous a review as I have seen in some time. I've been a console/game reviewer and playtester for over 4 years. I'm sorry, but that "review" seems to be very light on actual facts and filled with marketing and hype quotes from MS. These are the kinds of reviews I tend to see from first-time reviewers who are so happy to get a game or a system for free that they gush over them rather than being objective in any way.

I'm not trolling, or flamebaiting, but honestly that review was very "review-lite" and doesn't hold much real value. The marketplace system is overpriced with a piss-poor pricing scheme in place and it was given a golden pass. Two games were covered, the only two that have any "legs" and of them PGR3 is the only top title. Kameo really equates to a button masher and will not hold up once the hype and shine wears off. The system is still large and the power requirements are pretty obscene for a system that is to be left on 24/7 as a media center. Over 200W and heat issues are a concern no matter who you are. I'm not bashing the 360 either, just pointing out the cons that just so happened to be LEFT OUT of this "review" so conspicuously.

I think it's partly that people need to justify their purchase, so they put 'their' product in a better light trying to convince themselves that it was money well spent.

EXTREME!!!11oneone :D

I thought it was only the demo versions? Do you have your TV connection/resolution setup properly?
Yeah, it was the official Xbox 360 kiosk. We just opened it and put the games right into it and tried them out. So yes, it was all connected up correctly.

See, MS tries to take... er make money on everything. :p

I bet those $100 wifi adapters cost them $17.22 to make, honestly.
And those $40 64MB save cards hardly cost $9.75 to make.
What about those $20 faceplates, eh? Maybe 73¢?

I also like that inside the fancy casing is a regular hard drive. That made me laugh.

That could be cool. Anything is better than their 12-digit "friend code" on the DS. :p lol

Kyle and Steve...Thanks for taking the time to even look at the unit and provide your thoughts especially considering how busy normal life is. Most appreciative. I'm refraining from other comments about this thread. ;)

You did set it to 720p right? And set it to HDTV on the cable? Was this on a HDTV too?

Great write-up as usual [H]ardOCP

O.K. this thread is getting way off track. Can we please get back on topic.

If you have an honest criticism, praise, opinion, please post them.

Please do not post any more:

”Xbox for the loss…games are weak and overpriced”
“The console is overpriced”
“this game is a button masher”
“Xbox 360 has jaggies”

Stop posting price comparisons, theoretical comparisons, projected price comparisons based on unreleased systems and so on.

…in general, stop making off topic posts in this thread. Feel free to start your own thread on such topics.

Also, unless you are either Kyle or I (or work for the [H]) please stop making statements based on assumptions (based on other assumptions) about [H]ardOCP’s reviewing process unless you know what you are saying to be a fact.

Cool?

Thanks!

Uh, I'd say that's honest criticism after all the talk MS had durring E3 about how XB360 was the end of the age of jaggies.

Hell of a lot more than $300 they will be advertising (core system).
Umm, Last I remebered its only $50 for one year of Live?

TypeO, are you really Steve or Kyle??? Ha! Seriously, I really enjoyed the review and think it's wrong to make people want to to spend there money:) I haven't been keeping up w/ the 360, so I learned quite a bit . Plus, the forum is a bit humurous. Question though, was this a review or preview? I checked, but didn't find. Excuse my ignorance. Thx guys!

Kyle, I would have liked to see some data on the integration between the XBOX360 and Windows Media Center 2005 PC as well as XP boxes on the network. It was incredible to simply get my XBOX360 to talk to my MCE box which allowed me to watch live TV from the XBOX; as well as al the recorded HDTV and no HDTV content from the MCE machine. Just freaking incredible.

I think we will be learning the true power of the XBOX360 for years to come.

I see from the above statement from Steve that this is a review. With that in mind, I would of loved to see a more in depth review done. I understand this would of been a much larger project, but this review does seem to be more like a preview. A very tasty review however. Regardless, thanks for the hard work [H]. It's appreciated. nuff said....

I second this desire. I was really hoping the review would mention this feature. Imho, the biggest selling point made by MS was the 360's place in the home entertainment system. They really played up it being the CENTER of everything (media extender, dvd player, gaming system, ect). The review didn't really touch on this at all.

Also, I really would have liked the review to question (even just a little) the (imho) blatant tatics by MS to make a "shortage" on release day simply to garnish plublicity. If there are going to be 3 million units available in 90 days, why not make a million+ available for the launch?

Just my humble 2cents.

I wish there was more on the wireless, network setup, and the windows media center stuff wit h this wonderful article ^_^.

I demand more pictures too!

Kyle, Steve, do you think it was a mistake of MS to not include streaming support for owners of xp professional as well as the media center ed.

I wonder if any stores still have any on the shelf. I checked all my local Wal Marts, etc yesterday and nothing.

I was just wondering has anyone used a Keyboard and Mouse in the USB slots, and if so how did it work out?

I take it your console was one the media consoles that was sent out for reviews...

With this, have you had anyone of the problems poeple are reporting?

Wifi Issues?
Wireless controller issues?
Lock ups?
Overheating?
Disc Read Errors?
Any others?

Now given yours is a review console... Do you think maybe MS spent a little extra time making sure these consoles would be fail safe? Does anyone at hard have a system they went and camped out for and purchased at release?

As for poeple getting off-topic... It's all driven by the review from what I see. My biggest is bitch about the system is, marketplace. I have read this is where you basically pay for extras and mods. What a great idea to make more $$ off a scene that is usually free.

Sony says they wont have a central online system, but maybe they are just saying this. No one knows until release and I really hope they at least do a freinds system kinda like xfire or something. As poeple have stated Nintendo promises free online play for everything and that's gonna be a blast with that system. The revo is already looking to be a must buy for me. Only time will tell who is gonna be king for these next gen consoles.

Prim3, I would direct you to this article which has links to a number of articles all detailing the answer to your questions about stability and issues: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/23/138200&tid=128&tid=211&tid=10

Yes, there are a number of issues. I have personally come across a number of them. This is really my gripe with this and many other reviews so far. Either they are reviewing a product they have had for less than 24 hours so they have no real basis for glowing reviews or they are blatantly ignoring key issues for some other reason. On top of that anyone who would defend the fact that a cell phone/shareware game costs close to $10 with the marketplace pricing structure (which offers no discounts or incentives) is also missing a big issue.

While the 360 will be a proper contender in time, people do need to see it as it really is, a rushed product.

Your opinion has been noted bruenor :) . I didn't mean to come off as offensive.

On that note, maybe if Steve put something in about "known issues" and linked to some forums/articles with 360 problems. Its possible that in the time he had it...he had no complaints. That would justify the "sugar coatedness".

Yes, the extent this box takes current media extenders on the market is incredible. I only wish there as a way today to stream video content from a plain XP box instead of having to route it through my MCE machine. Nothing like rewatching my HDTV recording of the super bowel in HDTV over the LAN ;)

That is an assumption (incorrect) on your part. Just becasue you believe it to be a rushed product does not make it a fact.

Suggesting that there are ulterior / sinister motives or that we are hiding hardware issues is absurd.

A review that you do not agree with does not = conspiracy.

Again, please stick to the topic at hand. If you want to start a thread about hardware issues you are having, please feel free to do so. If you want to make a "Xbox 360 = Rushed product" thread, please feel free to do so as well.

Actually, It was a rushed product. At E3 and the MTV event(a month or 2 before) Not a single demo was being ran on a current xbox 360. The first demo xbox's were not even going around until October. And now we are at release, and we are now seeing all the issues with the product. If this is not evidence of a rushed product? Then I must be blinded by all the hype from MS. They wanted to be the first out and they are, now be prepared for Nintendos funky ass ideas to be totally awesome and PS3 to blow it away. This screams a dreamcast fiasco all over again and I think its about to happen. I was never impressed with the xbox and I am not impressed with this.

ninjaedit: Out of last gen consoles, I think the gamecube had the best graphics power, just a few bad moves by nintendo hurt the consoles(no mature games and no full size dvd's)

I say again, PLEASE start your own thread about your opinion on "Xbox 360 a rushed product", that is not the topic of this thread.

The white color does make it stand out, but it goes well with my white PSP, and you have to admit (even if grudgingly) that the 360 would look much better in the living room than an original Xbox or GameCube, the newer thin PS2 look good because they are so small...you can hide them anywhere.

Sexy setup there Steve ;)

You've inspired me to clean/rearrange my room and dump endless amounts of money into making it look cool ;)

I think every one of you up till this point has been completely wrong about everything you have said!. There! Whew, glad I got THAT out of my system. :D

I saw some sincere effort to make the review as impartial as possible, but I also saw some excitement. Geee, I wonder if that might mean that the product has a high likelyhood of being something to be EXCITED about?? Perhaps all reviews should be done by robots from now on so as to avoid such a travesty.

When it comes down to it, the experience itself is what you are paying for. It's you, the game, the console and the screen, blasting through games. How much fun will this be? How long will the novelty last? THAT'S what's most important, and I think enough emphasis was put on it.

How many gamers sit there - cruising through a racing game - and thinking, hmmm.. is it REALLY taking full advantage of the multiple threads? How could I tell... Hmmm..

(More like - Look out for the.....!!!!)

I guess the true test of a console would be its ability to disappear. Help you lose your awareness of it's presence, and sink into a virtual world.

Maybe I have stumbled on something here. I think... that the entire thing is going to depend on the imaginative inspiration of the GAME DEVELOPERS. I mean, remember the games of the late 80's? Early 90's? (Mario?? HUGE! Pacman??? Ugh.) The graphics weren't much to get thrilled about, but the cleverness of the games themselves was key to them being so addictive. They were FUN. Graphics alone aren't fun, and I hope that the entire gaming industry tries to get some of the fun back. Sure, being immersed in a virtual world is very COOL, but if it's a boring place to be, who's gonna want to stay there? FPS shooters are cool, but the storylines are getting a lot like adult films- You know where things are going to end up, and the reasons for going there are corny, and unimaginitive. Once you run out of reasons to nail.. (ahem).. your adversaries, you should probably find something else to do altogether for a while.

I'm not a Microsoft lover. I have never owned a console! I have been a die hard 'Computer' gamer since the VIC-20. This thing, however, is one step closer to getting me to slap down the cash. I mean, even PC freaks have to appreciate the jam it has... That price tag would call for a LOT of appreciation though.

I have to agree with those who say that TIME is going to be needed to get a REAL sense of the impact of this machine. I might even convert, once the prices come down, and the real impact, and game selection, become evident, not to mention the reliability of the thing!! I never buy the first revision of ANYTHING. I like to sit back and watch the fireworks first.

PD

Those Kameo and PGR shots are jizz worthy, seriously.

But it just seems like there are a LOT of problems cropping up with the hardware, and the thing is just barely hitting shelves. Personally I think I'll wait until the thing goes through a revision or two before considering a purchase.

GREAT job on the article though, guys. :)

One thing I hate about the Xbox is the lack of AF. Racing games are most evident of this, the dotted lines on the road don't look clear until they are about 2 feet away from your car.

Taking a look at the picture here:
picture
It looks like they failed to do AF again. It's hard to tell though, and I'm afraid to pick one up myself due to the failure rate of the consoles being sold.

Hehe, Steve, we almost bought those desks for the Austin [H] Bunker...in the end I decided that they probably wouldn't hold up to a bunch of heavy PC's being plunked down on them day after day, but that's definitely not the case with consoles! That looks nice man, we need some posters up on our walls too...everything is a bit bare here...

I'll thank you to please keep comments about your super bowels to your self.

I'm really looking forward to an in-depth review of XBOX 360 and MCE/XP interoperability. Some things I am looking for:
1) Streaming of DVD files from a networked PC.
2) Any Weather plug-in?
3) Internet streaming radio?

Currently I use XBMC on my chipped XBOX. I think XBMC is a work of art. I hope that the 360, being touted as an MCE Extender, has many of the same features.

There is a tidbit of info for this in Paul Thurrot's review at:

http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/xbox360.asp

It's in part 6 I believe.

I know it's not much but Thurrot's reviews on MCE are usually pretty comprehensive...maybe he'll follow up with more. ...*edit - at the end of part 6 he goes on to explain that does plan to write a follow-up review of the 360's media capabilities.*

*edit...now that I look at that part again, its more of a tease than anything else...but maybe worth a look.*

S.O.

Look, I know this is your article and you were probably very excited to be one of the few with an Xbox 360... but I have been in this industry and an editor for quite a number of years, so do not tell me what is correct or not and do not put words in my mouth. The Xbox 360 was rushed, you look silly even claiming it wasn't. Any system launch that had no details nailed down until the last minute, that includes only a handful of launch titles - of which none even basically optimized for the hardware, power/heat issues, a number of other problems en masse on day 1(as can be read from the link I provided above), and on and on. Please.

I gave you constructive criticism, and if you can't handle that, then you are in the wrong business. I never said anything about a conspiracy or sinister motives, what I said was it is the "kid in a candy store" effect, where you are so smitten with a new exclusive toy that you failed to be completely objective in your coverage. You glossed over some major head scratchers. You gave a pass to the marketplace pricing structure, no real coverage of the games, and failed to even mention one negative aspect. You are being defensive to no end, if the article stood on its own merit then there would not be so many different people all with the same EXACT comments about the review, now would there? The correct attitude would be to accept the criticism, learn as much from it as possible and carry that with you in future coverage. It is apparent that you are new to this field, and that would be expected of a site such as this, that isn't a bad thing and it is not a bad reflection on yourself or your work... it is just as much an editor's job to reign you in and help you get the best product out the door as possible. I know as much as anyone what deadlines and being early on new products does to everyone involved, relax.. step back... and re-read your own article objectively and see if any of the comments given thus far are accurate. I think you will see that a number of comments are on topic, and are constructive. It is a learning process, and it is tough to hear folks pick apart something you no doubt put a lot of effort, time, and pride into.

I stuck to the topic, in fact I stuck solely to the topic. I was giving you my take on what I read, and I gave you my background so you knew it wasn't some teenage kid spouting off. I clearly stated that what I posted here was my opinion, my personal and professional opinion. No more, no less.
