Microsoft wants part of the checkout-free action that Amazon is starting to use at their Amazon Go stores in Seattle. The basic idea is the store figures out what you put in your shopping cart and then automatically charges you for the goods when you leave. Amazon is leading the way currently and Microsoft doesn't want to be left behind so they are throwing their resources at this project. As far as I'm concerned this is great stuff and I'm fully onboard with anything that can save me time when I'm checking out of a retail store. I use self-checkout all the time and if I can just load up my cart and walk out of the store I'll be very happy.
“This is the future of checking out for convenience and grocery stores,” said Gene Munster, head of research at Loup Ventures in Minneapolis. The venture capital firm estimates the U.S. market for automated checkout is worth $50 billion. Cashier is one of the most commonly held jobs in the United States.
