Microsoft wants part of the checkout-free action that Amazon is starting to use at their Amazon Go stores in Seattle. The basic idea is the store figures out what you put in your shopping cart and then automatically charges you for the goods when you leave. Amazon is leading the way currently and Microsoft doesn't want to be left behind so they are throwing their resources at this project. As far as I'm concerned this is great stuff and I'm fully onboard with anything that can save me time when I'm checking out of a retail store. I use self-checkout all the time and if I can just load up my cart and walk out of the store I'll be very happy.

“This is the future of checking out for convenience and grocery stores,” said Gene Munster, head of research at Loup Ventures in Minneapolis. The venture capital firm estimates the U.S. market for automated checkout is worth $50 billion. Cashier is one of the most commonly held jobs in the United States.

mauahahahahaha... Goodbye retarded retail checkout clerks. Goodbye shitty self-checkout machines with moronic customers that can't figure them out.

Less social interactions with incompetent buffoons is always a win in my book.

Ive been using the walmart grocery where they load your car up and you never have to get out.

I am all for technology removing the time wasters in life.

I am jealous of that. Where I live it isn't offered sadly.

We have tried services like that off and on for some time. The issue always ends up being the produce or meat not being what we would pick if we did it ourselves. For pre-packaged goods it is nice.

Ntil one of them knifes you to get cash.

Your cart is updating, please wait....................................................................

Update failed-please reboot your cart.

This article is a little off. If you actually read about Amazon's cashier free store, it's actually not a full grocery store. It's more like a 7-11. Products were chosen to better suit cameras,....

Cashier-less stores are way off.

I don’t know, I don’t mind going to the cute female cashiers whenever I go shopping. No need to make every facet of life more antisocial.

Small talk with high school girls while they are working is not something I really will miss from my life lol. Nor will I miss when I have to wait for them to page someone to come over and ring up my beer.

So, $15/hr minimum wage for unskilled workers has a consequence? Go figure...

I didn’t say high school girls.

Gee, more data collected by your personalized tracking device for sale to all bidders.

Wonder how it handles purchases of crap that requires age verification and is it smart enough to only require one verification per cart? The last time I tried the self checkout at Wal-Mart, it needed an operator override for spray paint, then another one for some automotive chemical I had. Took twice as long as it would have to wait for a human checkout lane.

Walmart I bought a folding one handed opening pocket knife and didnt need to show ID but when I got to the counter with injector cleaner, they needed ID.

No thanks.

I want to pick out the food I buy, I don't want to end up with almost expire items, damaged produce, or a steak that's half fat.
I also want to see the receipt before I leave the store to make sure it's correct, not wait until the next day to try to figure out why I was charged so much.

If I carry my stuff close to the person in front of me, will they get charged?

You have poor standards for food if you are ok with some uneducated, under paid lacky picking your food items for you. Canned items are literally the only thing I would trust someone else to pick and I may as well get those while I'm picking meat and produce, so no real reason to even use that.

This is what wives are for :ninja: I mean No I wont help with putting humans out of work even if they suck. I would rather have them work and get paid than claim welfare and not work. I'm all for tek but not when it puts people out of work but I don't think these entry level jobs deserve $15 an hour either. 2 days ago i was at our local grocery store right when it opened, I was picking up supplies for a large diorama I am building. I went to check out and there were no tellers only the self check out was open. I asked for someone to check me out and a manager told me to use the self check out I said I didn't do that and he told me that was my only option so I told him here is my cart would you mind putting it back for me. He said REALLY, I said yep and he said Ok then as i walked out.

Maybe Bill can adopt them when they hit the hard times.

The Safeway near me just opened up the park and go option. For the first few weeks they had a greeter to promote the service. He asked, "have you thought about trying our Park and Go service?" I literally looked at him deadpanned and replied, "No, sorry, I guess I'm just not that lazy."

Meats are the only thing we haven't used this for. Produce I have just ordered like 1 more item or maybe 5-10% additional weight than I need but has been of good quality. Expiration dates have been good because most of your order is pulled from stock so you get to skip some of the FIFO rotation. Eggs are another one I haven't bought there but I get those from a nearby farm so I havent really bothered buying them anyways.

I don't have low standards, not sure why you assumed that of me. I value my time higher than wandering around a grocery store. Would rather spend that time with family or one of my hobbies. To each their own though. I know some people enjoy the shopping experience, I am not one of those.

The way you describe produce is exactly why I said what I said. There is far more to picking produce than weight and if it looks fresh. What I'm going to use it for, when I'm going to use it are also factors. Then again I Cook as a hobby, I suppose I shouldn't expect someone who is OK with people who don't know dick about food picking their for them to understand how to pick themselves.
