Microsoft’s ‘Avoid Ghetto’ Navigation Patent

Stockton, CA could use this desperately.
Don't be scarred homie.

New options with this algorithm:

* Avoid Red/Blue states
* Avoid states with State-enforced immigration laws.
* Avoid areas that don't permit open/concealed carry
* Avoid areas where the primary language != English
* Avoid areas without public/uninsured health care
* Route through areas where marijuana is accepted/allowed
* Route through areas where speeding enforcement is at a minimum
Basically the entire state of New York. Minimum jail sentence is 3 years for having your own legal purchased handgun from another state. Every state that borders New York needs to have warning signs to legal gun owners saying "You are entering a state that prosecutes CCW citizens, enter at your own risk."

^ You know where they went in Tampa and how this app would've changed their course?

Criminals do go to "low crime" areas, and places where police won't be patrolling often.

If they do that often enough to be significant, then it wouldn't be a low crime area.

How about using your eyes, ears nose and brain to sense "oh shit, I don't belong here." We have had that app since this species was self aware.

Otherwise, yeah. It would be good to have if you were booking a hotel or some such.

Sometimes that does not work. 1 block is all it takes to go from good to bad like those Tampa tourists where they realized they didn't belong and ended up paying the consequences. Portland for example where the Rose Quarter is. Guess where it's located? Right on the border of the freaking ghetto where you pretty much walk into an all-black residential neighborhood not a couple blocks away.

We threw money at it for the last twenty+ years, and that has not worked. What do do you propose we do to "fix" the problem that does not include mass incarceration, sterilization, or executions?

I can't recall the last time politicians throwing money at something actually fixed it :p As for the real fix, no clue really. I lack the resources, information and education to formulate any hypothesis on that matter.

I guess I'm just a little shocked by how bad it apparently is. I've only ever spent much time in my homeland of Australia and my boss/friend's home of Japan. Down here in Australia there's not really any community or street I'd feel worried about walking through, or even communicating with the locals.

I live in St. Louis. People here need it.

Please, I'm from St. Louis too and its not dangerous. Sure go ahead and quote crime statistics, they not accurately reflected with respect other major cities report crime rate:

St. Louis is an independant city, with no actual county. But, the city has to have all of the county offices such as sheriff and Recorder of Deeds. Whenever a resident has to list a county, they list St. Louis City. This does make it a county, because there has to be a county in the technical sense. But the government works as one as a city. So really, St. Louis is both.

The reason St. Louis ranks so high is because of the fixed borders. The City of St. Louis is just over 61 sq. miles. This area is the urban core of the region, and doesn't include any suburban areas. Most cities were able to annex large suburban areas such as KC did or Indianapolis. Cities like Pittsburgh, Baltimore and San Fransicsco have very small borders and don't contain any suburban areas. We all know urban areas have more issues with crime. So if your city only contains the most urban areas and is compared against a city that contains vast swaths of suburban areas, of course you city will "look" more dangerous. If you compare the St. Louis Metro area to other Metro areas, we are very low in crime. Even within the city, there are only certain areas of North City (not even all of north city) that skew the figures up very high. The city as a whole is generally safe. You should use the same common sense in any area.

You also have to look at how the crime occurs. Most is not random on innocent people, it's on criminals themselves.

lol they probably would have a 10 mile radius around my old neighborhood in Inglewood, ca for yuppies and scaredy cats to avoid.

"Microsoft’s ‘Avoid Ghetto’ Navigation Patent"

Surely, there is prior art when it comes to navigation that avoids the Ghetto?

I loled... Nothing like getting lost on Memorial Drive & Glenwood Ave at 2am...

Do you even understand what probability means?

That's like saying its just as safe to swim in water where shark attacks are very rare versus swimming in water where shark attacks are quite common. Try it out and let us know how it goes.

I would hate to be a business in one of those areas that this device says to avoid.

I can picture local business getting ready to sue in 3...2...

A Garmin once tried to take me down Broadway in Gary, Indiana.

Haven't used it since.
