Microsoft issued a press release today stating that the company has posted record profits, a 32% increase over the same period last year, easily beating Wall Street expectations.

Microsoft said Thursday that it earned $4.93 billion, or 50 cents per share, on revenue of $14.40 billion for the three months ended March 31. That compares to net income of $2.98 billion, or 29 cents per share, on revenue of $10.9 billion for the same quarter a year earlier.

What did they do to get such a large increase? Sell a butt load of xbox 360 and related hardware and software? Was it vista OEM revenue? Was it crack or other contraban? I mean that is even with all the troubles they face with law suites and stuff. Just blows my mind.

As I work in the corporate IT world, most of it is likely software assurance upg/renewals for Windows / Office.

There was no reason to go for the software assurance 2-3 years ago so we cancelled renewing it since we knew we would not see office 2007/vista during the time period (2 yrs) of the SA plans. It's cheaper to do it 2 years from now out of SA to get Vista/2007 than it is to pay and then pay again in 2 years for 2 more and only get one upgrade out of it.

While we are not yet deploying vista or office 2007 we will be in the next 2 years (probably 6 months from now the first images for vista go out after EVERYONE gets office 2007 that didn't have 2003 with the 2007 file formats patch.

well
i bought a 360 a few months back
and iv got vista..and honestly, i like it..sure some things dont work in it, and thats why iv still got xp installed for those rare problems, but i like the GUI of vista and it works fine.
imma get my buddies to get it too when they get a chance

...the latest version of Windows is secure and selling like hotcakes...

...Intel's chips are suddenly showing more bang in the overclocking field...

...and ATi's yet-to-be released cards are already showing signs of being hammered by NVidia's offerings...

Did we hit an event horizon about 2 years ago and start going backwards in time??

Looks like its all Vista.

"Entertainment and Devices--which incorporates the Xbox unit and Microsoft Game Studios, Games for Windows, and Zune--saw revenues drop to $929 million, a 21% decrease year over year, with a loss of $315 million, down 22% year over year. Microsoft cited lower Xbox 360 sales as the primary reason for the shortfall, with unit sales down 71% to .5 million from 1.7 million in the same period last year; notably, that period last year was the first time the console was meaningfully available for purchase, following a supply-constrained launch. Software sales for console and PC were $393 million, down 44% year over year."

All Vista? "...Thanks in part to the release of Windows Vista..."

Well, if it wasn't the gaming or Zune division that boosted them so high...then what else would it be? Surely keyboards and mice aren't that profitable.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic--they do sell enterprise-level software and services, you know. SQL Server, Outlook and Exchange Server, Office, ...

As others have implied, in a service-based economy one must look beyond the product.

This article brings up some pretty good points. It appears that Microsoft's "profits" are not all they are cracked up to be. The profits came from shareholders, not customers.

Said another way, Microsoft achieved record breaking earnings during the Vista launch quarter by taking money out of its assets, not through amazing sales of Vista and Office.

It appears that Wall Street hasn't been fooled either since the stocks are still trading at a level lower than pre-launch.

Surely Vista is not making all of that but at the same time, all new computers are coming with it and people want stinking dual cores. Not to mention the functionality and QUANTITY of Office 2007 products out now. I would say this is a smoke screen to get people to jump on Vista.
