Microsoft Expected to Post Sharp Profit Rise

Ugh, Microsoft, Apple, and Nintendo post record breaking quarters and are all getting punished due to these recession fears. If it is a bear market we are running into, I can't wait for it to be over.

Maybe the tax rebates will help. People always love to spend unexpected money.

Honestly, I would really LOVE to see what would happen if some kind of law was passed FORCING all pc's to be sold with no operating system at all.

It truly would be an interesting experience to watch.

Most people would keep their preferences. Not many people who buy prebuilt computers want them to come with Linux, and OS X computers are already available and popular.

But that's still off-topic...;)

At first and for many years, perhaps, out of sheer inertia. I believe that it would seriously even the playing field and there would be much more variety out there in the long run though. MS became dominant in the first place due to their restrictive OEM agreements after all.

And to truly make unbundle all OS's from the hardware, OS X would have to be available for all x86 computers, not just blessed Macs, and Macs would have to be available with Windows or Linux pre-installed too...Steve Jobs would rather wear a tutu to Macworld than allow that to happen though, so it will continue to be relegated to a niche no larger than desktop Linux. A profitable niche, but a niche nonetheless.

You certainly don't believe it was because of ease-of-use back when they became dominant in the MS-DOS days, do you? :p

ZDNet said:
1981–1995
MS-DOS and Windows 2.x/3.x: No serialization or copy protection. If you make a copy of the floppy disk(s) containing the installation files, you can install it on any computer. The impact of casual copying is relatively minor, because of Microsoft’s wide use of per-processor licensing agreements. This practice, introduced in 1988 and ended as part of a 1994 antitrust settlement, made sure that nearly every PC sold by large OEM computer makers included MS-DOS or Windows or both.

They became the most popular through predatory business practices, period. If you believe otherwise, you're simply deluding yourself. That's not to say they make bad products (some are quite good, but then other companies make good products too), but that has nothing to do with why they are successful.

Nice try. You're reading that as MS is forced upon *US* rather than Microsoft's earliest attempt to curb piracy. Microsoft couldn't rely on us to buy Windows for every computers. We buy one copy and use them on everything we had, and Microsoft natually would lose money.

So the earliest attempt to curb piracy was to have OEM buy the products instead of the customers. Well why not? Everyone used Windows ANYWAYS! Except now this time it's paid for.

But regardless! You go to any store and you wouldn't find Linux or MacOS on the shelf. Just Microsoft products. It's like AMD. If you don't advertise your products, people's not gonna know about it.

Stop reading it as Microsoft is shoving Windows down our throats, and start reading it as Microsoft was trying to curb piracy.
