The technology sounds awesome. Using previous traffic data, artificial intelligence, and the power of the internet to prevent you from getting stuck in traffic.

Service developer Eric Horvitz told the Times he got the idea for an intricate mapping system after getting stuck in side streets trying to avoid highway traffic in Seattle. "Everything seemed to be backed up," he said. "It hit me that we had to do all the side streets. We really need to understand the whole city."

My biggest issue with this is with the name. Seriously, Clearflow? You would think that with all of their marketing genius they would come up with a name that doesn't make you think about urine streams. :p
 
Will probably have a bug that directs you straight into traffic jams. Fuck that it won't work.
 
hell anytime i hear 'flow' i think of women and their leaking crotch's

but i like the idea. if i can grab my phone and have it tell me how to avoid traffic im all for it.

I just see them bitching about the name. That's alright, though, because Microsoft ALWAYS comes the rescue. :D

Some of the newer Gamin GPS units already have something similiar to re-direct your route to avoid traffic.

So MS has decided to jump on the bandwagon...
 
In that case, Gamin decided to jump on the bandwagon of people using the web to get directions and avoid traffic too. I've been doing that since the late 90s. :p
 
So either MS took longer to develope their solution.. or Garmin started developing sooner.

And it is NOT the same as going on the web and getting directions.

The Garmin units use the "real time" traffic patterns to help you avoid traffic.
 
as a frequent traveller, i can personally say those garmin units that try to reroute you ( I still use them though) ....usually send me way out of the way, or better yet, have me get off a highway and then tell me to get back on when there is no on ramp available. I am always up for new things, and hope this gets rolled out for my windows mobile device asap!
 
Who cares which company had the tech first. The question is which company got it right? Will Microsoft's implementation deliver the goods?
 
It sounds like a good idea in theory,but the most advanced technology still isn't a match for the idiocy of some drivers.And it only takes one of them to screw up traffic for hours!
 
I tried to actually sell something similiar to this to auto companies about 6-7 years ago,. Too bad none of them ever got back to me about it. They would have owned the technology before any other company. There are better ways to do this than anything I have heard of still. Lets let google give it a shot next. =)
 
I think this is the truly interesting traffic avoidance device - http://www.dash.net It communicates real time with other units and gives actual traffic patterns as they happen and uses that combined with historical data to offer you a bunch of different routes with ETAs...

I don't suppose you've ever heard the term "traffic flow" before, haven't you?

I wonder if Microsoft is going to integrate this into their Sync technology. That would rock.
 
i think this is MUCH more involved then Garmin's way of redirecting through traffic. i dont think we should be comparing the two, but i guess we will be when it comes out.

I dont see any reason why they WOULDNT include this into SYNC. thats what SYNC is there for.... making driving easier and better...
