Finally gave up on gimmicky gaming headsets and "assembled" the real deal

I had a pair of Koss Porta-Pros laying around (You need to check them out, one of the nicest headsets around under a few hundred bucks) I took them apart and popped the drivers in a pair of ear muffs. I have now have great driver quality, in a circumaural noise-cancelling headset for around $50 and all is great with the world.

Unfortunately the mic I picked up to replace my headset sucks a giant horse cock. I have to lean into it and yell and my friends still tell me I sound like a a yeti trapped in an aluminum can. So Im looking for a cheapo desktop mic that will allow me to speak into it from about 3 feet away and not sound like shit. Main use is VOIP ala teamspeak, and thats really all I need it for

Usb preferred but 3.5mm will work fine

I highly recommend one of these.

It's worked great for me in Vent and every other instance of voicechat I've found occasion to test it with so far.

A lot of people not looking to spend a ton of money on a desktop mic swear by the Blue Microphones Snowball. It's USB and generally very well regarded.

I always end up using this, no matter what other mics I try. I am heard on Teamspeak and Valve games when I talk normal and even whisper.\

The modmic is cool and probably higher quality but I don't always use my cans when I need to use the mic so it wouldn't work for me. That's why I gave up on the Zalman clip on.
 
bought the usb mic, and im quieter than can be. wtf! I just want a mic that will pick up my voice from a ~2ft away
 
Sound to me like your settings are off. Do you have mic boost maxed in control panel and application?

I wish someone would compare it with a cheap Zalman to see if it's really worth upgrading at $30... C'mon, mics can be one of the least subjective pieces of audio gear to compare, just record something with both under the same conditions, upload it, and let the masses decide... Maybe add a second set of recordings with background noise.

Surely someone out there has a Modmic and a Zalman clip-on?

P.S. That Snowball USB mic seems like overkill for what the OP wanted, but it seems he's still having trouble, not sure if he got that or the $20 Logitech. You did adjust mic volume in Windows no? And turned off mic boost under Advanced?

I would do this for you but I don't have the Zalman any more. Gave it away a long time ago. It never worked well for me.

As for the Snowball mic being overkill, it may very well be. But I used to fall into a fairly common pattern a little too often. I'd ask for advice, people would mostly tell me to buy something that cost a bit more than I wanted to spend. So instead of buying the $100 thing I'd buy the $30 thing. It would show up, and inevitably I would hate it. So I'd go back to the advice, ignore it again, and buy another $30 or $40 thing. And then I'd hate that. And then I'd do it all again.

And by the time I'd finally found something that worked the way I wanted it to and worked well enough to keep me happy I'd have spent more money than I would have if I'd just bought the more expensive thing in the first place, and I wasted tons of my own time screwing with settings or whatever trying to make the cheaper things work.

I eventually decided that no, I'm being stupid and I'm not doing this anymore. I've slowly become the kind of person that will spend more money now if there's even a slight chance it will save me from that kind of frustrating process later.

Maybe he bought the snowball and it isn't working for him. I don't know. I'd be surprised as most people that buy the thing tend to love it, but there's no one product that's always going to make everybody happy. All I know is that the people I know that have that mic use it on my gaming community of choice's Ventrilo server and they sound great.

No, I bought the logitech USB mic. As for settings, record volume is maxed. There isn't even a mic boost option, and the only driver (even from logitech's website) is the standard usb audio device driver included with windows. I am barely audible over teamspeak etc unless I lean into the mic to talk everytime, not what I want. Is there anyone that has a desktop mic that they speak into from about 2ft away?
