Metro 2033 review

I'm guessing you're running a 16:10 monitor or res. I use 16:9 which is wider. So I guess I don't experience that.

Yes, 16:10 (1920x1200). The game was making me a bit dizzy when playing before changing the FOV.

wow, I really regret buying this without waiting for a demo or more extensive feedback. It feels like a really really lame console port. No quicksaving, poor performance all around and I can't even change individual graphics options! I don't really need anti-aliasing and SSAO and would love to just disable those features so I can try and squeeze some more frames out of this horridly optimized mess of a game.

Maybe in three months they will finish making the game but I really feel kind of ripped off now.

Game runs fine. The indoor environments look better than even Crysis and only performs a bit worse so I fail to see what the problem is.

the game doesnt run fine in DX11 with all its features turned on.

it does for me.. around 30-40 FPS. granted I have a 5970 though. tessellation takes a big hit to FPS but that's not down to optimization. so far every game that utilizes tessellation hits FPS hard. so those with a single 5850/70 should be able to get by with it disabled. guessing with all DX11 effects enabled Fermi may make a quite a difference in this game.

How does one take screenshots when playing this game? I didn't see a binding for it and Fraps doesn't seem to be working.

yeah but getting 30-40fps with the most expensive card made makes a typical single high end gpu gaming pc almost useless to run this game in DX11 at a decent resolution. even with all of the extra DX11 features turned off a 5850 can only average 40fps at just 1680. I am not saying the game is poorly optimized but thats pretty darn demanding when a $300 video card is only getting 40fps with all DX11 features disabled. its not even remotely playable for single gpu owners if you do turn on all the DX11 features. http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035460354&postcount=49

This game is gorgeous. The textures are incredibly detailed, the character models are animated realistically and the music/sound effects set the mood perfectly. It's been awhile since I've really felt like a game has had cutting edge graphics; I can honestly say that Metro 2033 does.

That said... wow; do you need a powerful rig to run this properly! I'm running a 1680x1050 resolution and I can not enable DX11; performance is in the 17-22. When in DX10, I can get anywhere from 22-60; probably on average, close to 30ish. That's on an i7 920 overclocked to 3.6 and a 5850 running at 900/1200. If you truly want to experience this game in all its glory, you're going to need nothing short of a 5970.

Let's see what 10.3a does tomorrow...

I'm just using Normal Settings @ 1920x1080 dx9. Runs really smooth and still looks great. Enjoying this game more then I though I would.

If anyone has an issue with the FOV, 65 seems to work quite well.

Hopefully they release a patch with configurable video settings. Other than that, I'm very happy with the game.

There was an article up on the main page of hardocp talking about a set of performance drivers coming out for us ATI folks on March 24th with details provided by AMD on the performance gains that will be noticed on various games.

I'm curious whether some of the optimizations in those new drivers will also help out with Metro 2033. I am on the fence as most of us know about Stalker all too well when it first came out. I may just wait this game out and let you guys beta test this game for the devs since I still have Crysis, Crysis Warhammer, and the 3 Stalker games to finish. I just recently made a return to PC gaming, so yes i'm a bit behind on the latest games.

The infamous Wilhelm scream is another one you hear all the time in movies and games.

And I wish we didn't. That's not even a case of "used because it's cheap to license", it's used by idiots that think they're making a wry nod to some sort of industry inside joke which stopped being "inside" - and even slightly funny - about fifty fucking years ago.

I HATE THE WILHELM SCREAM AND ANYONE THAT USES IT

Here's a screenshot so my post is on-topic.

Wow, that's really nice detail on that door. I mean, it's a door. But you can see chipped paint, and paint that's been painted over top of the paint, and you can see that the door is warped along the top from water damage. That's got to be the most detailed door I've ever seen in a computer game.

I like it in some cases. Its amusing to hear in Command and Conquer or in games that are intentionally cheesy. When you hear it in something more serious it really pulls you out of the experience.

The no quick saving part could be a sticking point, especially if enemies are as tough to bring down as they are in the STALKER series. If that's the case, they'll have to correct it with a patch before I try it.

It's challenging at points but nowhere near as hard as Stalker, imo. Stalker had flaky hit detection too, something Metro 2033 does not suffer from.

Yeah it's weird. I've been taking screenshot comparisons with Advanced DoF and Tessellation on/off and I can't really tell much of a difference. Not worth the 20-30 FPS hit on my 5850 anyway.

What do you guys think about that door in the screenshot above? Look at how the paint is faded and chipped, and how there are small cracks in the wood up near the left top corner, and how the wood appears to have buckled up near the top in the middle. That's got to be one of the greatest doors I've ever seen?

Yeah, you said. I don't know, the whole game's like that, that door in particular sort of slipped past me.

If you like that door you'll probably like the way the objectives are managed too:

Looks great. The fact I can hit that user.cfg file and tweak things to my liking really gives me some confidence.

can you direct me to the .cfg file please.

FOV is in there, correct?

and.........nice door.:eek::eek::p

I will be waiting on this. It looks fantastic for sure but I lack the rig to do it in. Either I will wait for it to be dirt cheap or wait to build a new rig.

That notepad idea is fantastic.

It's packed full of lots of little touches like that. The magazine on the Bastard Gun being properly animated, the gas mask/nightvision use, pumping the pneumatic rifle to increase the pressure and so on. Nice and immersive.

The light and shadows in this game is the best in any game ever. Period. Better than Crysis and the underrated but brilliant Risen.

I love this little scene from very early in the game - a boy is playing and talking to his father - looks phenomenal and is quite touching, setting the mood nicely.

All these sexy screens I'm seeing...are you guys running DX11 capable GPUs for that or what?

1680x1050 DX10, No AA, 4xAF, Very High - So far my GTX 280 has been holding up. It could run smoother, but It's far from unplayable. 2560x1600, which is my monitor's native res, is unplayable by a longshot :(

By far the best looking game Ive seen closest to Crysis.
I have it all maxed out, I have AA set to AAA though. 1920 x 1080 and I get 30 AVG FPS.

GAME LOOKS AWESOME!

This is the first title that really feels like DX10 is coming into its own.

I honestly wonder if we'll see developers include more DX10 apis in their games; especially considering the requirements to run them in DX11. While the 5xxx cards support it, it's not like you can really run DX11, even on High, at a playable frame rate.

It'll be interesting to see how Fermi performs.... are you guys using Adv. Physx?

Can only nVidia card have ADV physics on?

Wow. This game does look insanely good. My jaw may have literally dropped at a few of those screens. Anyone think it will get the same attention that Crysis did for its graphics? Even if the graphics are equal or slightly worse, it's such a completely different environment / atmosphere that I feel this still counts as breaking new ground.

I'm really digging this game thus far, I just finished getting past the front lines between the commies and the nazis.
My only issue with it is, even though I get decent frame rates I can't go past 1920x1200 because if I do I think my cards are running out of VRAM.
