This site may not be the best place for this question, but I figured there's got to be at least one person on here who knows about the latest in metal detector technology. This is as general as it gets with general hardware questions. I am thinking of purchasing a Bounty Hunter Metal Detector for Xmas and wanted to know if this model is good? I've looked for more pertinent forums online, but there just don't seem to be any for metal detectors. Any advice is appreciated.
 
I dunno much about metal detectors but I have a buddy that goes to the park every morning for his walk and finds about 5-10 dollars in change.

From my research the Minelab Explorer SE Pro looks like the ticket for novices.

I'm looking for a used model on Ebay.

The model in your link looks like it's for kids.
 
@Old Hippie: the metal detector is for a child. I'm looking for something easy and simple for him to use. Also, if you know of some good forums where I can find more info on this stuff let me know. Thx.
 
I used to buy a fair amount of stuff from Sportsman's Guide but that was 10-15 years ago. Back then their return policy was pretty good. This detector clearly is aimed at the "young adult" market and may be a bit short for you to use comfortably. A coin at 5" isn't much. I'd recommend you check out some local pawnshops (if there are any) for a step-up in quality and capability. And don't forget your trowel (or mil surplus folding shovel), you're going to be digging a lot of tiny holes (some parks and public land places don't like metal detector operators because they don't backfill their holes so check the rules and regs before you start hunting as to whether metal detectors/detecting is permitted)

just suggesting it as one site with some possibly fruitful links. I think they also have a for sale/trade forum but I'm not positive. Googling on "metal detecting equipment or associations" can't hurt either. You can look for places near you. At the very least, the walking is good for you, well...usually. <VBG>

Pray tell, how am I supposed to talk about something I know nothing about?

I've never had one but I did my research and found the model I wanted.
