Memory needed for a Quad?

Just a quick question: What is the sweet spot for running two x64 Linux SMP clients on a Quad in VM? I know that MOAR = BETTR but for people on a budget would 1 or 2GB suffice or should it be bumped up to a 4GB minimum?

Thanks in advance! And for the record I have not caught the folding bug in any way, shape or form. Honest. ;)

 
IMHO, 4 GB is the sweet spot but no need to buy the most expensive high performance sets. Just 4 DDR2-667 sticks will be great as long as you keep the overclock to 3.0 - 3.2 GHz area. The VM will eat a lot of memory and 2 GB will barely cut only with a pure dedicated folding box and some luck.

 
I'm useing 2x2Gb in my Quads.
Remember that p2619 is out there and it needs 800Mb just to crunch correctly.
I would go for DDR-800 as the faster memory does help a bit but get memory that runs happily at 1.8v.
You can also hit 3.2 Ghz by going 400x8 and still keep the memory in spec by running 1:1.

I'm only seeing ~3.2Gb of that memory in Win32 and each VM gets 1.2Gb.

I have 2 boxen running Linux host OS with 2 Linux VMs and they both run with 2 gig of RAM total. These are basically pure folding boxen so I don't have to worry much about leaving a lot of RAM for other tasks. I have them setup with 512 for each VM and the folding client inside the VM setup to use no more than 512 meg of RAM. They crunch just fine with this setup which leaves the host OS 1gig of RAM on one of them. The second box is also running a WinXP VM and it is allocated 256meg of RAM which leaves the host OS with 768 meg of RAM.

I don't think either box uses the swap partition at all but if they do, it's not much. Neither box is really used for anything other than the VMs, though. Something to keep in mind is the possible additional RAM needed for some work units in the future. The client should stop you from getting those work units if you don't have the RAM for them, but that is not guaranteed as we have previously seen.

 
I might as well go for 4GB... DDR2 800 is wicked cheap atm. I'm not saving much by sticking with just 2GB. :)
