So after my computer stopped POSTing upon updating the bios, I worried my motherboard was toast. After replacing my board for a P5QL on sale at the 'egg, i re-built my rig only to discover...no POST!!

After much cursing, I thought of a previous experience when a power surge caused one of my DDR2 sticks to fail. So I tried each one by itself and...viola! I booted right into windows on the new board, I didn't even need to reformat the hard drive.

That got me thinking, how many of you out there have had memory problems? This particular issue may have just been a stick failed, but how common is that?
 
I had a processor start to fail, and it was manifesting itself in RAM issues. I must have gone through about $450 in different ram modules before i caved and rebuilt the system from the ground up. It was a royal pain!
 
I had a set of DDR2 (2x1GB) Crucial Ballistix fail on me. But other than that, I've been pretty lucky with memory.
 
It's very common, and what is also very common is troubleshooting issues, people think they have a bad motherboard, when it's really just a bad stick of ram.
 
I had one module from a OCZ Flex XLC PC2-9200 (DDR2 1150MHz) kit fail on me. That same year I also had one module out of a 2x4GB Patriot DDR2 -900MHz kit fail on me. i also had one of my Corsair Dominator GT 2000MHz C8D modules die on me. Corsair took care of it and that's what I'm using in my system now. I've owned a lot of memory modules so really three failures out of countless sticks of RAM is pretty good.
 
It has been years since I have had a stick of RAM fail in one of my personal systems. It has probably been at least 6-7 years.... same goes for everthing else except video cards and DVD-RW drives.... think I finally got a good one... stupid cheap Burners get on my nerves.

And I've only had a 7900GS fail on me (one of the ones that wasn't supposed to be sold in the first place... if any of you remember that)...

I have had a couple power supplies have a single cap fail in them. Both of those are back up and being used in other systems after replacing the one bad cap with a better one.

I do keep all my hardware running very cool though. Always have plenty of airflow through the case.
