I'm a bit confused I have 4GB 4x1BG sticks and am unpacking a 5GB file using winrar, at 44% it has taken 9mins!!! I thought it would be quicker than this, my old PC with 2x512 of ram would unpack it faster, anyone have any idea why this is? my ram is runing at 1066 on 5-6-6-15 2T timings, PC spec in sig, also in Vistas preformance test my memory comes out bottom with a 5.5 score, and give only got 1 GPU in at the moment

*EDIT* Took 17mins 41 secs in total - surely it sould unpack faster than this?

It could be that winrar is not running well with Vista. You said your old system was faster, was your old system XP or Vista.

There are several programs that are faster on XP than on Vista for now. Plus is winrar even written to take advantage of 64bit.

I'm pretty sure it is your processor that is limiting the time to uncompress than the amount of RAM (plus its speed) you have.

Sorry I don't understand what your saying? Are you suggesting I have a slow processor, or the complications with having a quad core?

What version of Winrar are you using? If you haven't already, try using Winrar 3.7b4 and see it that helps.

I'm using 3.7beta I think not on my pc at the moment, if its a vista thing thats fine as long as M$ sort it out

It's no MS's problem to sort out. It's Rarlab's. Although, I haven't tested any large files yets, most of the files I've extracted have been done prety quickly. I'll test a larger one and see if I can duplicate your experience.
