Wait, I think I get it. They're testing out new [H] AI, they're all going to go on permanent vacation and see if we can tell the difference. ;)

Since Kyle is getting all wet-eyed with nostalgia, I remember when I got HL2. The source bundle came with my 9600 pro. HOLY FUCK that card was a monster. I never actually played HL2 until like 10 years later. The rest of my life was all about Counter-Strike Source. The 9600 pro was so baller I tossed all my Nvidia cards. For some reason Toms hardware has them ranked with the 4k Nvidia series, but frankly I didn't see a decent performance boost from Nvidia until the 5700 series and even then I wasn't impressed. My main rig had a 9800 pro and all my Lan boxes had 9600 pros or 9700s.

Then I went back to all Nvidia when they came out with the 8800GTs. My problem with in Nvidia as noted in the sig is those mutherfuckers just kept rebadging the same core all the way through to the 250GT I believe. Just endless rebadges.

The problem with the 8800s and that era is I could always unlock the firmware and overclock my cards to get the exact same speeds as the higher tiers.

I bought a bunch of those PNY 9600 GSO 768? I need to go look. Its the one you could unlock to 9800 Ultra speeds.

Then Ati sucked until the 280x which was pretty fucking awesome.

(Its the G92 I think)

Kyle, if you have something to say go out and say it. I like that [H] can be blunt and doesn't soften blows when they are well deserved, but this backhanded stuff is unprofessional. If you know something tangible, spill the beans instead of levelling vague insults.

Kyle's candidness and no bullshit front page posts is what helped make this one of the oldest and largest enthusiast forums on the net.
 
Well I guess this means big Vega won't come close to either Titan X nor 1080 TI performance. I'm guessing little Vega to split 1070 and 1080 performance while big Vega is 10-15% slower than the already cut-down Titan X.

I think this is the continuation of the disappointment from Kyle back when he stated on the front page that why AMD stopped providing samples to [H] due to Kyle's continued harping on AMD. And the same article on the break up of a good relationship between AMD PR guy and [H]. And the possibility that AMD is trying to sell the graphics division. I tried to find the article but was not successful. I think it might be right before the AMD 480 release. It was a pretty good article if I remember correctly.

I've been reading [H] for a good long time, and although I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy of the site, I generally respect it. But there's a huge difference between candid, non-sugar coated, objective analysis and posting random, vague insults on the front page. This is me being candid and blunt.

It is quite possible that he's under some form of NDA for a bit. So coming right out and saying "this sucks" is not possible. Posting a completely random quote from years ago and letting the forum members jump to conclusion is not a bad way to say something without saying it (and violating that NDA).

Or he's just being nostalgic.

It would be a bit hard for reviewers to have a sample when the only samples are engineering ones with that funky USB3 hardware attached to it. ie. Lab samples currently.

Maybe if this were April, it would be more likely for retail samples to be floating in the wilds before an official launch. But nobody had real samples of Polaris 5 months before it launched, besides AMD.

Back in the old days, ATI and NV often talked smack vs each other. These days they are more like a corporation. They rarely talk smack vs each other anymore.

Everything has to be filtered & approved by the PR guys and in many ways it is much more boring.

But Vega isn't the 9700 smack down of NV. It simply cannot be, because Vega isn't a purely gaming chip. It carries all the burdens of a HPC architecture, the mix-mode ops, the accelerated fp16 and fp8, the flexible and configurable fp64, and all the useless crap they added for HPC like the 512 TB virtual memory address space, with that fancy HBM controller. All that die space, wasted for gaming.. and Vega isn't even that big a chip, not maxing out at 600mm2.

It's like they aren't even trying to go balls to the walls with Vega. At least with Fiji, they tried.

How do ppl expect AMD to compete using a HPC architecture in gaming, against a very efficient GP102 Pascal designed purely for gaming with all the HPC capabilities neutered? Well, if Vega was 600mm2, they would have a chance at beating GP102... but at similar size? No way in hell.

NV is going to continue to milk gamers for another generation and so on...
