i mean take away the armors and machinary and you get just another simple first person shooter. I say all the mech concepts are just to sway people who thinks "armoured" robots looks cool, when infact the game play is just like almost every other fps
Are you talking about Mechwarrior 2?nst6563 said:I think they should remake the first one. I still think it was better than the others I've played. That little locust would haul ass...and after dodging the fire of the battlemasters on the field, just park it as close to their legs as possible. The battlemaster's couldn't see the locust, and the locust would block them from moving...all the while cutting them down with the little medium laser and machine gun..it was beautiful stuff
that and the locust could also be parked right under the marauder's cockpit and side cannons...perfect fit. then the marauder couldn't move left, right or forward...cut him down too...
man...loved that game....ahh the memories...

I remember smaller Mech's in that game too. I'm gonna have to do a search for Locusts now cause I can't remember them.
DamienThorn said:No, he's referring to the original mechwarrior games. There were two, if memory serves, that came out prior to Mechwarrior two. They took place in the inner sphere, with oldtech mechs, and were absolutely awesome. While they looked like ass, when compared to todays games, they were a hell of a lot of fun at the time. They were the games that got me into the mechwarrior/battletech game lines...

UoMDeacon said:Not really. The original few MW games were about more than just running and gunning. Tactical ammunition management, as well as the all important heat management played into the game. Add on the fact that not all mechs had the same upper torso rotational speeds (I just slaughtered the spelling), and differences in accel and top speeds as well.
I agree that normal FPS games have sort of caught up in terms of picking armament and things like that. The best part of the old MW games, were those BattleTech boothes you could sit in at the arcade, and play against a bunch of people. Those were the days.
What was that hugely expensive xBox game with the Mechs and the huge controller? I'm tempted to go out and get that.
PS: ...and yes...giant robots are frickin cool.

Yeah, I don't remember them. I think I got into it when Mechwarrior 2 came out. Then I played it up until 4 but never finished 4 I got bored with it.nst6563 said:you're correct..."THE" original Mechwarrior game that was in MCGA graphics. At the time...the graphics kicked ass and it ran great too (and that was on a 286-16 w/1Mb ram and a 512k video card!!!! )...but compared to anything in the last 10 years they do look like ass And talk about portability...the entire game fit on one or two 3.5" 1.44Mb floppy disks!
the Mech's I remember from it were: Locust, Marauder, ShadowMaster, BattleMaster and I *think* it had the Rifleman in it too. I know there were others, but I can't remember them.
That game was also the reason I got into the Mechwarrior type games.

Who in their right mind would make a space fight simulator run off a mouse and have no joystick support?

The one at Dave & Busters was Battletech.csims said:Apparently you've never played any of the Mechwarrior games. You're very much making a blanket statment which is not true.
Mechwarrior 1-4 was as close as you could get to having a proper Battletech 'Mech simulator. (Aside from the Multiplayer version they had at Dave & Busters which was different hardware/software all together. I can never remember the name of it.) There is serious micromanagement going on while you play. These games were never FPS like Doom or any other Doom clone.
Mechassault 2(and 1 I'd guess) still have some management going on, but nowhere near as much as the PC Mechwarrior series.

Moose777 said:Yeah, if you lived close to me I'd go with ya. That's a cool game.
If you look at the Mechs in it they have the same name as the Mechwarrior ones. So, Battletech and Mechwarrior are the same universe. I forget when they changed names though. It was back in the 80's when it was still a paper role playing game.
<==Used to be a paper based RPG nerd. Played D&D, AD&D, Vampires: Masquerade, Werewolf, Battletech, Warhammer and Star Wars.
csims said:It's never changed names, just that Battletech was all about the 'Mech combat and Mechwarrior (PnP) was the RPG aspect since you actually make a mechwarrior vs. just creating 'mechs.
bonkrowave said:I was under the impression that Solaris(I think that was the name)owned the battletech rights for its pen and paper RPG. Then Microsoft came in and the first few Mechwarriors were a joint venture between them. Something happened tho and the two parted ways and this Mechwarrior off shoot was born.
Well something like that.
csims said:Never heard of Solaris and Battletech was never a PnP RPG. Mechwarrior is the RPG portion of the Battletech universe. Everything under the Battletech line was by FASA. FASA Interactive was the offshoot software company that made the Mechwarrior and Mechcommander PC games. It was bought by Microsoft before Mechwarrior 4 came out. I think Mechcommander 2 was also the other MS branded game. Then of course came the XBox and Mechassault 1 & 2.
Wiz Kids is now the owner of Battletech. I believe one of the co-creators of Battletech started the company after FASA went out of business.
Just hit up www.classicbattletech.com for it.
bonkrowave said:I was not sure about Solaris .... it was FASA I meant. Solaris was a mech type MMORPG game that came out a while back.
And Battletech was more definatly a PnP RPG ... a simple google will bring up a whole bunch of sites to this effect.
csims said:Someones definition of RPG is really out of wack.
I was looking for that site earlier cause I couldn't remember the whole story behind it. Battletech was the shit back in the day. I've always loved Mechwarrior and Batteltech.csims said:Never heard of Solaris and Battletech was never a PnP RPG. Mechwarrior is the RPG portion of the Battletech universe. Same here, I still have it though. I made it a habit a long time ago to keep the games I've most enjoyed. Regardless of being able to play them anymore. I still have Full Throttle and Mechwarrior 2 I also have Dark Forces and a few others that I've played the crap out of. I doubt I'll ever get rid of them.Hangover Fish said:I wasted SOOO much of my childhood on Mechwarrior 2. Oh God I miss that game.
