Mechanical Keyboard Guide

Sure wish I could get on the mechanical keyboard action. I keep checking the for sale area for a steal on a mech keyboard, but everything is still too steep. $90 is just too much for my first purchase into this new world of typing. I believe my lenovo thinkpad x120e must have some kind of mechanical keyboard as it is magic to type with.

Check out yard sales and thrift stores. You might stumble on something good.

I got a pair of Model Ms for $1 each at a yard sale once.

Razer Black Widow Cherry MX Blue $59 at Fry's Electronics.

Razer Black Widow Cherry MX Blue $59 at Fry's Electronics.

Is that normal price or is a sale going on right now? I won't be around a fry's for another 2 weeks. I think maybe I will stop by a thrift store, check out what they have, not a bad option at fry's though

Nice!!!

Is that a G9x I spy there? I'm debating between that and the Naga for my next mouse (I play a lot of WoW, the Naga looks silly though). How do you like it?
I love it. I bought the original G9 a few years ago and I finally bought the G9x since my old one was getting worn out a little bit. Great mouse

So i got my ebay model M in today, and it seems to be a bad board.

I bought an extra ps/2 usb adapter (belkin) but a few of the keys double register at random; "ee ii rere" seems to be quite common. They DO work but it's about 50/50 that they will repeat or not :( I contacted the seller and he basically is unwilling to offer any sort of refund or help. He claims he never opened it up before.

I can try to crack it open if I buy the right socket size but I'm not even sure if it's worth it.

Any experiences in this before?

Sale ends on April 21st. Kind of debating if I might want to pick it up just for the hell of it. I already own superior boards but the price is really good!

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

My only concern is that the Cherry Blues are kinda loud on the Black Widow.

I'm thinking the Cherry Brown's might be good for me, but I can't seem to find one that has USB ports and audio jacks.

Would anyone know? Thanks.

No problem!

Something important to keep in mind is that they all will sound "loud" if you bottom out the keys. There's no rubber membrane to quiet the plastic on plastic. The blue's click isn't actually all that bad. I'm not sure if I've gotten used to it or just that the parts have broken in, but the keys seem a lot quieter than the first day of use (from what I remember).

Measuring with a sound meter from 5 inches above the keyboard (with an average ambient level of 55db), repetitively hitting keys gave a measurement of 64db. That's really not that much considering that's a measurement from 5 inches away. I think people just get spooked cause most membrane keyboards are near silent.

Just picked up a Filco Majestouch 2 (Brown switches) today.

Having used membrane all of my life, all I can say is WOW, this is one hell of a keyboard.

I was at the store and they had both Browns and Blues so I was able to test out both and I figured the Brown was more suited to me, its a little less loud.

Filco ftw.

I'm envious of people that actually have physical locations where they can take the goodies for a test drive. ;)

Wow what/where store is that!?

I'm based in Singapore.

We have a very active Computer Enthusiast community here and there is a very large mall catered to us hardware geeks called:

Sim Lim Square.

It's basically a physical mall version of Newegg.

A lot of the stores here carry many types of hardware and peripherals, so you can always come down and have a test and look before pulling the trigger, it's pretty great.

No but I remember reading some postings in vr forums, tec drome posts updates and I get jelly because there is nothing of the sort in the US!

Asia went through a sort of mechanical keyboard craze a few years ago. That never happened in the West.

Therefore in Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc. you often have a good selection of mechanical keyboards to try out. Doesn't hurt that they are all made in that area as well.

Just picked up an Xarmor U9BL-S for a good price ($100+shipping), and I couldn't be happier. Still getting used to typing without bottoming out the keys every time.

Hopefully I don't get any of the durability issues described earlier.

Did you buy an "active" PS/2 to USB adapter? The newer model adapters will not work properly with older keyboards.
I stated this in the OP, visit this link:

Looks like I spoke too soon... the LED's on my Xarmor U9BL-S don't function anymore

avoid this company at all costs....

i got a hold of a broken cherry keyboard. it looks like it has "white" switches. is it possible to remove the physicall switch thats on the metal plate and buy/install a new switch?

"White" are most likely actually Cherry MX "clears". These are basically heavier browns and are fairly hard to obtain. Only a couple of Cherry point-of-sale boards and a couple from Deck (like 'Tactile Frost') seem to come with clears.

I've been wanting to try a board with clears for a while although my muscle memory has adapted well to browns...

I'm used to blue and when I tried the white/clear it felt squishy. I got some replacement switches on order from mouser

I stopped by to talk to my dad the other day and noticed he was getting rid of a bunch of old pc stuff. I decided to have a look and found a new in the box 1992 Lexmark mechanical keyboard.:D

Provantage has a Cherry G803000LSCEU2 for $77. I'm typing on one right now and I'm liking it so far. It's a nice keyboard.

It has cherry blues, pbt (I'm pretty sure) lasered key caps, and pcb mounted switches.

If it's got Cherry Blues, I'd like to know. I'd definitely want to purchase one if that's the case.

the model looks to be G81-1800LPMUS -0 / 01 its white with white switches. any idea where i can buy switches. if anything else i might just take the keys and use it on my otaku filco

If it's a G81 then it's got ML switches. Keycaps are MX compatible, but switches are not.;)

just found that out. well i took the keys/switches apart and saw some sticky residue and cleaned it off now the windows key isnt "stuck" but the right ctrl key isnt working. the trace isnt detecting pressure

Yup, it's got blues. I'm typing one one that I recently bought from Provantage right now. :D

Excuse the crappy picture, I really need a decent camera. It looks much better in person.
