***Maze4 GPU vs NV-68***

If you really want to watercool your 6800U's ram, and have the money, you could go for the NV-68. If you want somehting much cheaper (still about 1/2 the price of the NV-68, even when you add ramsinks to the price) then get the Maze4 gpu. You may see better core temperatures with the Maze4, because the mounting is being placed directly on the core, while the NV-68 also has to get a good mounting on the memory chips, giving the Maze4 a better potential mounting and core contact. You likely wouldn't see temperature differences between the two blocks giving one an overclocking advantage over the other, because both should keep the core around 45-50*C range.
 
I just installed Maze4s on my 7800s and brought idle temps from 60C to 40C. Heck at load my GPUs only go up to 44-45C.
 
i get 40C idle 48 load, with my 1.55v prescott hammering it, with a 2.8b northwood it did 36 idle 44 load but i tend to lapp things to mirror shine(both tdx and maze4 were unacceptable :p )

i use 100-2000 grit but the blocks didnt need more then 2000 grit they were pretty good to begin with, i also have rubbing compound that i use to take it even farther but havent tried it yet, i usualy just do 2000 until it looks like this:
 
If you want a combo cooler that works then get the Aqua Computer AquagraFX 6800 rev 2 cooler. It has a floating GPU sink so that there aren't the problems associated with the NV-68 not contyacting the ram chips well.

I like this idea! But it looks like the largest barbs they have are 3/8", I've got a 1/2" system. Any comment on how that would affect my system (going from 1/2 to 3/8 and then back again)?

I was under the impression that rubbing compounds on the bottom of a heatsink hinder thermal dissipation. Sure, it looks really nice, but that polish gets deep into the microscopic grooves where your thermal paste should be filling.

The bottom of that heatsink does look nice, though :).

I had this discussion with Cathar a while back and it appears to not have as significant a difference as many people would lead you to believe. There is a little shareware program called Pressure Drop that would let you play around in detail if you wish. But the long and short of it is that 1 drop to 3/8 that goes back to 1/2" is essentially negligible.

Please keep in mind that there are few and far between any systems that have a solid 1/2" throughput all the way through the system. The NV-68 certainly doesn't.

thats no rubbing compound, thats about a hour of 2000 grit(probably ended up being finer after a few heat sinks, i use the same paper to finish off every lapping job, who knows how fine it actualy is now that i wore it away lol), thanks for the information, ill never try out using rubbing compound
 
so should you go right for the 2000 grit, or start with what first, what in between, and then finish with the 2000

can i pick this up at home depot, lowes, aco, or are we talking hobby store, or special order only.

You can actually get it at most Wal-Marts :).
