May DC Commandos

Sazan, I switched over to the 16e units for my server and other desktop, boy that was a bad idea. Between the minecraft server and 2 threads of the 16e units the server was crippled basically. It only has 4GBs. Glad we have more 15e WUs! :)

I know it "May" be early to start thinking about but any ideas for a June push? :p
(Okay sorry for the bad pun haha)

Here is the list Sazan created before. (I have not updated it because I do not know his formula really)

Based on all that, here are the top 10 projects that should be prioritized to increase our overall DC Vault position:

1. GIMPS
2. Prime Sierpinski Problem - PRP
3. OGR-27
4. Muon1 DPAD
4. Seventeen Or Bust (tie)
6. Wieferich@Home
7. Majestic-12
8. Aqua@home
9. yoyo@home
10. NFS@Home

For the curious, here's the rest of the list:

11. Docking@Home
12. Cosmology@Home
13. Enigma@Home
14. GPUGRID
14. ABC@Home
16. POEM@Home
16. The Lattice Project
18. Collatz Conjecture
19. Climate Prediction
20. uFluids@Home
20. SIMAP
22. Malariacontrol.net
23. SZTAKI Desktop Grid
24. QMC@Home
25. Leiden Classic
26. Rosetta@Home
27. PrimeGrid
28. Einstein@Home
29. Dimes
30. MilkyWay@Home
31. RC5-72
32. Seti (BOINC)
32. Spinhenge@Home
34. World Community Grid
35. Folding@Home

I think I made a good push "yesterday" on OGR-27.

etothe3ric, I updated that list at the beginning of May and I think the top 9 were unchanged, so I didn't post it. NFS went down few notches thanks to the push at the end of last month, and a couple others went up or down a spot.

If want to stick with a BOINC project, I suggest Aqua or Yoyo. Aqua is multi-threaded, so the WUs are quick if you have a lot of threads but slower if you don't. Yoyo has a mix of quick and slow WUs. Neither one is a memory hog (espeically Aqua since you're only running one WU at a time).

If you want to make a non-BOINC push, I suggest GIMPS. With a group effort we could make some nice progress. Each WU runs on a single core (with HT support), so it's kind of like BOINC: more cores equals more work done but it doesn't complete any faster. LL WUs (prime tests) are the slowest and take a month or more. Double-check WUs take about a week, and that's what I normally run. Setting up Prime95 is probably easier than BOINC, and it's an old project so it will run on most any system.

I'm open to other suggestions. I've started some PSP, and I know others are working on OGR and SoB. DPAD is a long-term thing, and Wieferich would be too.

We've moved up again on OGR-27 with a whopping 186K+ Gnodes processed yesterday. We are now in the 110th spot.

Nice push Tobit.

Quick question on DPAD. Do you need to run that 24/7 to get credit? I keep getting results are older than 24 hours getting new info. I only run it for 4 hours or so on a laptop a day and I will change projects if I am just wasting my time. Its only been 3 days or so though.

Also, is it possible to run just the GPU client in BOINC and not the CPU client (to pause or something)? (I know you can do the other way around)

I don't know about DPAD. I assume there's some sort of deadline on the work but I don't know what it is. I run the background task so I don't see any messages, but I know it can take a while to queue up enough work to auto-submit. You can try running manualsend.bat and see what it says (and if you are granted any points).

You can run just GPU work in BOINC. I don't know if there's a built-in setting, so you'll probably have to set it at the project level (for projects with both CPU and GPU work) or just run GPU-only projects. If you're just talking about pausing the CPU work temporarily but letting the GPU keep running, I don't think there's a way to do that.

Nice push Tobit.

I'm also not sure what the time limit is on DPAD, I know that I have gotten points for a results file that was just about a week old though. They arent really deadlines like Folding and the other programs because of the way DPAD works.YOUR computer is making it's own work units, then uploading the parameters of the unit and the results to the server which verifies it somehow and credits you with the work, then if its a new best case, sends it out as the sample results file for people to seed from (see below).

The message you keep getting about the 24 hours is the lattice file (accelerator design itself) and sample results file.

My understanding of the sample results file is that it contains the top 50 results submitted by anyone in the project that your program uses to seed some of its runs from. Instead of starting from scratch with everyone and slowing evolving into the best case, they start with the current best case and evolve into a better case. There is also some runs that are done without any seeding to prevent getting stuck going down a promising path when there may be a significantly better one out there.

In a nut shell (this is all my understanding of how it works from reading the site and forums for muon1):
Even if you run 24 hours a day those two files will download every day (can change frequency in config if you want).
The deadlines aren't really deadlines and should still be valid after at least a week.

Thanks for clarifying. The project was very hard to get information from.

I'd like to chime in, I haven't been here for a while :) In regards to scaling, the muon client seems quite good, at least with Nehalem/Westmere. My Core i3 330M and i7 920 both contribute about the same, considering the differences in clock speed and core count. Not sure about effects in memory/bandwidth, though.

The client is also good to run if you're doing other, more important things on your system. Since the client only uses around 85-95% of the total CPU, it won't bog down your system or throttle other applications like Folding@home does; I've found in the past that even on lowest priority the SMP client tended to drop framerate in games quite a bit. Whereas there is no such issue with DPAD, since the client will always try keep a 5-15% buffer from full CPU utilization.

I stopped my crunching when I went to China for a month, the results were still valid when I got back. The results don't work like F@H, in any case.

I just realized today that the Climate Prediction stats are broken, so no stat updates are getting out to other sites like DC Vault or Free-DC. As a team we have moved up to 552 even though the Vault still shows 576, and I have a few more WUs to turn in. The stats problem is being worked on and will hopefully be fixed soon.

I was running Climate Prediction as a test, but with the stats down it's hard to measure progress. It's a very active progress so it would probably take a dedicated push to get out of the 500s (and continued effort to stay there). I'm not sure it's worth it yet.

Looks like there is some [H]ard crunching being done out there. I havent checked the stats but i see we have gained a few spots in ORG-27 (i know at least Tobit is working on that one, nice work!), GIMPS, and SoB. I also see that we gained a spot in PRP netting us a cool 350+ Vault points! Razor have you been sneaking off to do PRP WUs again? :D

Looks like the progress in NFS is going well. I've been jumping around to a few different projects but should have all my machines back in NFS in a day or so to close out the month and hopefully gain another spot or two. There are lots of people making great contributions to this project, so thanks everyone!

Sorry, you can't blame me for that awesome bump in PRP, thats all SazanEyes's doing. I been fiddling around in SoB and putting in some 10+ day work units into Climate Prediction.
The work that SazanEyes has been putting into PRP on a daily bases takes me 4 super overclocked quad cores to do. I need to step up and buy a couple of whatever he is pounding that project with!
Great job everyone! We are steadily marching our team to 9th in the DC-Vault and have become a very feared team in the over all standings.
I am very proud of the effort that all of the [H]ard|OCP Commandos have put forth.
I better stop with that before I get mushy and teary eyed.;)

Great Job Sazaneyes!

I wish I had more systems. There are just too many great projects that need our attention!

We are still amassing new [H]Commandos each month. I remember when the [H]Commandos basically started. I was one of the first new members from the original like 5 guys. Lets push to be number 9!

It's called an SR-2.:p PRP tends to be hit-or-miss for points so 24 threads helps. We should move up two more spots in about two weeks. Great job on SoB by the way.

I made some more progress on the stats website today. I've got working import code written in SQL, but I'm not happy with it so I'm rewriting it in PHP. I should have the import running by the start of next month to have some historical data. I actually did something similar a while ago using MS SQL Server, so I'm trying to design it right this time so that maintenance is easy once it's up and running (i.e., the scripts don't break when a project is added or removed from the Vault). I'll post a link when I've got something to actually show.

I'll probably keep running NFS for a few days into June because I really want to overtake Planet 3DNow!

Thanks ! Switched team and bring in 200~300k+ Gnodes a day

PS: Do we have our own packet proxy running ?
No we do not, and there is really no need for one since there is always work available from the servers.
Edit: I think mflop use to run one for his own computers and you could do the same if needed.

Ah Ok, i already got my own local packet proxy running because i got so many clients - was just wondering if we got one for team stats (besides the dnetc one).

Welcome to the OGR-27 team TheMTZ! Checked the stats and you already have 234,089 Gnodes just for yesterday!

I usually have a pitiful 25,000.

Great to be getting more people and moar D!

Welcome TheMTZ. its good to have another cruncher on board. Especially one whom is crunching ORG-27 as we seem to need some help there. :)

I fired up GPUGRID on my 550Ti but I'm afraid that it might not be quite as powerful as I had hoped. The first WU netted me only 7.5K points. I'll run it 24/7 over the next few days (now that it cooled off a little outside) to see if it gets any better.

dmaine/kenlo - If you guys see this what kind of cards are you crunching with?

Welcome TheMTZ. its good to have another cruncher on board. Especially one whom is crunching ORG-27 as we seem to need some help there. :)

Im crunching on distributed.net since early 2000. Started with RC5-64, then moved on to RC5-72 but stopped doing this because the ATI gfx cards got too powerful on this project. Thats when i moved all my systems to do OGR-27 exclusive. I did 27.1 million points for my old team on OGR-27 - which is 99.9% of the whole team (seriously).

So now with the team change those points go into a more active team and not in a one man team.

PS: Pumped out 188,918 gnodes yesterday

i have one overclocked gtx460 and a gtx560ti running gpugrid right now. the 560 takes about 16-17hrs for one of the long run wu's. the machine with the 560 might get better results but its my primary play and surf machine.

Well I grabbed a few of the "short" gpugrid WU's and they took about 11-12 hours on my 550Ti. Then I thought why not grab a long one and see what those are like - the answer is an estimated 55 hours run time! Yikes. Apparently 192 stream processors isnt quite enough to efficiently run these big WUs! I'll let a few of these run but I might have to swap it back to primegrid, or maybe get a bigger card!

I'll be sliding all my chips on to SOB and let them ride and see if it pays! {a little Vegas humor}

How I have it setup is I run boinc with just my GPU projects and run ogr-27 on the CPU. I have gpugrid setup but i never get an WUs from them it normally rotates through Collatz, Primegrid, and Milkyway.

Primegrid just gives an insane amount of points and the WUs are like 5mins for my gtx460. My 8800gts (dinosaur haha) can only run collatz in my spare server.

Looks like we are making great progress in ORG and SoB! Nice work guys. Sazan I see we are nearly to 15th place in NFS. Thanks for crunching so damn [H]ard on that project this month, sir. :)

It looks like the long GPUGrid WUs are taking about 20 - 30 hours on my 550Ti. Most of them that Im getting are completing in 20 hours and are worth 43K points. Not quite as good as I was hoping but I'll keep on it for a while and see if we can grab another spot or two.

Crunch [H]ard!

I'll keep crunching NFS for a few more days. The Dutch Power Cows were not happy to be mowed and they've ramped up, so they'll probably overtake us once our push is over. Hopefully we can overtake Planet 3DNow and hold them off. I noticed that I'm #3 in the project by RAC and I have the #2, #6, #10, and #12 computers. :D For a while all of the top computers were running Linux so I'm happy to represent Windoze.

edit: We should move up two spots in PSP in the next 3 days.

Great Job Sazan! with all those top computers and having such a high RAC! I think for next month I am going to do the same split of a BOINC project and a non-BOINC project. I am going to keep my i7 running OGR-27 and my other computer run yoyo@home.

Anyone up for Yoyo@home with me?

Commandos, keep the pedal down [H]ard!
The gap to 9th is closing fast!

Climate Predition stats seem to be working again. We should see a DC Vault adjustment tomorrow.

Nice DC Vault update! Up 31 spots in Climate Prediction, and up one in PRP and Majestic12, for a 458-point bump. If only we could do that every day. It looks like we should get some points for SoB tomorrow. I'm going to re-run my project ranking formula tonight to see if anything's shifted.

After I'm done with NFS, I'll probably work on Yoyo, Aqua, and maybe GIMPS. I think I'll spread out this month.

edit: Here's the updated ranking based on today's data, and a slightly different weighting scheme. We crushed NFS@Home. :D Only the top 5 are below 9K on the Vault, but most of them are closer to 8K. :( Maybe I'll do a "top 5" push this month, since I'm already running 3 of them. Wieferich@Home was painfully slow back in the quad-core days, but I wonder what an SR-2 can do.

1. GIMPS
2. Prime Sierpinski Problem - PRP
2. OGR-27
4. Muon1 DPAD
5. Wieferich@Home
6. Seventeen Or Bust
7. Aqua@home
8. yoyo@home
9. Cosmology@Home
10. Majestic-12
11. Docking@Home
12. Enigma@Home
13. ABC@Home
14. Climate Prediction

I think in order to make a huge push in Aqua we need GPU power (more specifically nVidia with CUDA) rather than relying on CPU power for this project. I think CPU resources maybe better used elsewhere just because the drastic point differentials between the GPU and CPU.

IIRC, Aqua hasnt had any CUDA WUs in quite some time. They ran a CUDA app shortly after the project launched but it must not have woked out. They do however have several multithreaded applications. http://aqua.dwavesys.com/server_status.php

Im not sure how many threads the MT applications will scale too but my i7 uses all 8 threads. These MT WUs produce quite a few points and I think with a few quads we could make some good progress. I'll move my i7 over in a day or two.

Great work on SoB, PRP, M12, and Climate guys. That was a sweet DC Vault update! And props to Jathanis for keeping our position in Spinhenge. Sazan - refresh my memory: What is this list showing? The projects we can gain the most in with the least amount of work?

Crunch on!

I'm gonna keep pushing hard with theMTZ and RIUM+ on ogr-27. I was gonna do some yoyo@home but one of the WUs (ecm) uses 1.5GB! Switching my server over to ogr-27 instead of yoyo.

Thanks metallicafan. I must of missed that somewhere. Maybe can move the x6 over to aqua or yoyo if the weather remains cool.

Team HardOCP and myself hopped (back) into the Top 100 overall at OGR-27

Sazan - refresh my memory: What is this list showing? The projects we can gain the most in with the least amount of work?

Close, but it just uses the DC Vault numbers, so it doesn't really account for the amount of work necessary to move up a spot (sometimes easy, sometimes hard). It's a pseudo-scientific guess at which projects should receive our resources for the best DC Vault gain. The projects are ranked based on how far we are from #1 in the project, how far we are from 10K in Vault points, and how many Vault points we get each time we move up a position. If I can get this automated, I'd like to add in "PPD" numbers for each project using a benchmark system. Right now I just use current rank as a guess for how hard it is to advance (high current rank = hard = lower priority, which is why GIMPS outranks PRP).

And yes, Aqua hasn't had GPU units for a while. I don't know if I've run it on an SR-2 but I've run it on a hexcore, and it uses all 12 threads and completes WUs pretty quickly.
