I just got an Ivy Bridge laptop with a quad core i7. It folds most of the time around 3.3ghz. I installed the v7 client and pushed start, and it looks like I'm getting between 5k and 10k PPD depending on the WU.

Is there a way to increase PPD beyond those numbers? Stick a Linux VM on there?

That seems low, when I had my SB i7 folding at 4.2ghz I was getting upwards of 40-50k ppd, using V7 client. Don't know why that's so low since it doesn't seam like it should be at its speed...

That was back in the bigadv days, I would guess

yea... those sound like bigadv numbers.....

I'm running a 2600K @ 4.6 in native linux (ubuntu 12.04) with smp 8 setting.... gets right around 36K.

my recommendation would be native linux, if you can't go for linux VM.... my 2600K @ 4.3 gets around 30K with same settings in a VirtualBox VM with ubuntu 10.04 installed.

How do you have it set up?

My DD rig in Win7 with v7 client. There's a wide range of smp PPD units, most on it are 10-20k, though some reach 25-30k.

Currently chip is at stock, E3 Xeons can only up the BCLK...which can cause very bad thing to happen in the event of instability...

My laptop i7-2630QM 2.0GHz, with turbo boost at 2.9GHz, get about the same ppd.
Don't expect Desktop performance from a mobile CPU.

I figured out the issue: throttling.

My CPU was dropping all the way to. 1.8ghz when temps got above about 65.

I figured out the solution: throttlestop
It's a great app that lets me control the behavior of of the CPU, even forcing turbo ratios . So now I'm folding at 3.4ghz and getting 16,500 ppd. At 50 watts that's a pretty darn good ratio .
