Hey all...was just wondering if anyone could tell me the fastest processor I could run in this board?

I have upgraded to a 160G 7,200 rpm IDE hard drive, 768 mb RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce FX 5800 256mb vid card. I am going to get a 512 stick and make it 1g of ram, but that brings me to a couple other questions...

I need to update the BIOS to get the board to recognize the total space on my HD. I have read how to do it on the HP site, and it doesn't look that tough, but, I do know that a failure will kill the MB. What is the best way to do this safely, or should I just pay a comp repair place to do it, and by doing this, will it push up the max processor/RAM I can safley run?

For those who are curious, his motherboard is based off the Intel 845G chipset. Theoretically, your mobo can support any Pentium 4 with a 400Mhz or 533Mhz FSB, meaning you can have a 2.8Ghz to 3.0Ghz P4 CPU. Though a cursory look on the Asus site shows that Asus mobos based off that chipset can only support, at max, a 2.4Ghz 533FSB P4. However, it all depends whether or not the HP BIOS will actually recognize the higher clocked CPU.
 
Thank you so much... any way to find out about the BIOS restriction? I guess that would go for the memory as well.

And if I was to buy a 2.4 P4... what ?model? number? I have seen SL6DV, SL6WF, SL6RZ. What are these codes, and which do I need? I also looked at the ASUS site, and I can't find old boards for info on it.

According to the link above, a P4 2.4GHz SL65R will work fine in that motherboard after you update the BIOs. Those "codes" are the specification numbers of the CPUs, almost like a model number.

The only way to find out what's max CPU the mobo can handle to keep on searching. A 30 second search on google got me the link above. An hour or so of searching should show the highest clocked CPU possible with that motherboard.

Or you can always email HP and ask them. Can't hurt to ask.
