So if I were to buy a mATX board with onboard video and two PCIe slots, can I populate those with a couple of Nvidia cards and fold on them while using the integrated video for viewing my desktop, etc. without folding on the integrated video?
 
yep i would agree with what gkanakis pposted, would definitely be true with nVidia onboard. it got me thinking tho...what about a mATX Intel or ATI or 3rd party chipset/video and using a nVidia GPU in the PCIe slot(s)? or did i just open a pandoras box(en)? :eek:
 
It's hard to have ATI and nVidia drivers installed simultaneously. That would be your major hangup. The folding performance lost just to display a desktop is really minimal. If you are doing something that would really take much GPU power your going to want the discreet video card working anyway. ATI's hybrid what-have-ya would solve your problem but the folding performance of those cards is a little less than optimal at the moment.
 
I believe most if not all motherboards with onboard video will disable it when a separate video card is installed.
 
Only reason I ask is because I notice some stuttering while scrolling through web pages while the video card is folding.
 
few things to do


1) disable Physx, this helps some people
2) change your affinity settings
3) bump up IE (or other browser) priotiy if you need

The amount of work that an IGP could offload from a folding-capable card would probably be a small teaspoon in a large ocean, metaphorically speaking. Really, it's only when playing games or watching HD video that folding performance suffers, and IGPs can't do any of those effectively anyway. Othewise, it's kind of negligible, maybe 200 ppd at the very most.
