Hi I am trying to get a good matx power supply to power as small 530 system. I am just looking for suggestions. Thanks
 
I don't think "mATX" exists as a real power supply size. Are you thinking of SFX? Many of the slimmer mATX cases (that can still take full height cards) use this size, as does some of the mini ITX Silverstone and Apex shoeboxes, How about TFX? The really slim (using low profile cards) mATX cases often use these, as does some of the mini ITX cases from Foxconn. If you were going a bit bigger with mATX, then you might be using a normal ATX power supply, because that's what most of the mATX mini towers and cubes use.

For TFX, arguably the best choice is the Seasonic SS-300TFX. It is fully modern (meaning not a warmed over ATX 1.3 design) and is even 80+ Bronze. It got great reviews for being capable of putting out rated power with great characteristics (low ripple, etc.) and low noise, coupled with expected high efficiency.

For SFX you have a few more choices. Seasonic makes a 300W (22A +12v) and 350W (26A +12v) which are 80+ and decent choices. The 350W may get noisier under load because it uses 60mm fans (I own one and have heard it ramp up). The 300W is more of a "traditional" shape, with the 80mm fan sticking out a bit. This makes it tough to use in the mini ITX cases because typically it means less clearance for CPU fans. Other choices are the FSP 300 and 350W (sometimes sold as Sparkle) offerings. Similar to Seasonic, the FSP 350W uses 60mm fans, and is a LOT noisier than the Seasonic. Also, both have similar +12v (around 22A) so the higher wattage just beefs up the 3.3v/5v. Silverstone offers a 300W and 450W (coincidentally both made by FSP). These are more "enthusiast" friendly because they offer PCIe power plugs. All the FSP/Silverstone units have flush 80mm fans.

That's about it. Most of the other ones range from mediocre to crap. SilenX has some overpriced offerings, Ultra has their modular unit with low +12v, Athena Power doesn't seem to have good QC (higher percentage than usual bad Newegg reviews), FSP's lower wattage units are older designs with low efficiency.
 
Nope i'm looking for actual matx power supply. I am aware of the other sizes I have several tfx by both seasonic and antec. As for sfx I have the silverstone 450 which is awesome, I just need a good matx one.
 
mATX is not a "standard" form factor. Do you mean a "short" ATX?

mATX is a standard form factor. It's just not used a lot.

The mATX PSU that leifeinar would be crappier than the Silverstone SFX.
 
leifeinar any experience with that athena power supply? I have used some of there server supplies and they were fine. If I could just slap the silverstone into my case I would quickly buy another one and be set. The silverstone comes with an sfx to atx bracket but no shrink ray to make it fit a matx :)

I meant for PSUs. Yes, mATX is a motherboard standard (and cases that fit) but there is no "mATX PSU" only "SFX PSU" or "TFX PSU."

Athena Power seems kind of iffy. Not that one in particular, but if you read Newegg reviews (taken with a grain of salt of course) overall they aren't very positive.
 
I believe it's technically called ps3 but when shopping online like newegg and other places you look under matx in power supplies.

Ahh, you mean "short" ATX power supplies? I'm still not convinced that it exists as an actual form factor. Just because some vendors or manufacturers call it such doesn't make it an official industry wide form factor.

I believe it is a standard. & its very very close to sfx. If I remember correctly 1 dimension was off by like 5mm or something.
 
Well I assure you matx power supplies do exist and if I get around to it I will measure it versus my silverstone sfx. I bought some noname 500 watt matx locally but would feel much better if I could find something with quality.

I have seen mATX PSU's several times, but I have never seen any name brand ones at all. For smaller then ATX, I think the silverstone SFX units are the only really good ones (other then the random SeaSonic odd ball units)
 
Well I fail today sfx has extra screw holes allowing it to fit the matx area so problem solved.
