I"m torn between the two options
glossy seems so nice
but matte is ultra cool and slick

what do you guys think

unless you are computing outside or with your back to a window more often than not, glossy.

i'll probably get push back on this, but my glossy 13" mbp rarely bothers me with glare.

I second the vote for glossy. Unless you're going to use the notebook outside quite often, or you're going to work in an environment with a lot of fluorescent lighting, then glossy is better. Since there's no matte spray-on coating, brightness and apparent color reproduction is slightly better on a glossy display versus a matte display.

matte, less glare easier for watching movies. I also like privacy screen for keeping those creepy kids on airplanes away from my work

Glossy... Yeah matte may not have a reflection, but I hardly notice my 15" Glossy Hires reflecting me or glare. And glass is SO SO much easier to clean.

I prefer glossy, really makes the colors look nice. Matte just looks dull to me now.

Gonna vote Glossy because it is the more practical screen. I will say however that I do love the look of the Matte screen and if it fits your needs then I would def. go with that screen

I always, always, always go matte. Laptops especially, but even my TV/Desktop PC/etc, all go matte. But it really is personal preference. I absolutely despise dealing with reflections in my screen.

Glossy. It's so much better with colors. I saw an MBP with the Hi-Res 15" matte screen in an Apple store. It's fugly. The screen bezel is silver, not black, and there's no glass. It's the same screen film like on PC laptops. If you touch it, the screen mashes inward and the colors displace. YUCKO!!

I've had glossy before and the glare pissed me off tremendously.

I now have matte and I love the no-glare!

But if light wasn't an issue, then I would probably get the glossy.

Matte ftw, no question. I've yet to see any glossy screen that - regardless of image quality - gave me any reason to choose it over a matte one. Reflections are just... *ugh*

Matte FTW. Glossy is fake looking good, print that b*tch and notice how it pales in comparison to the overdriven colors on the Glossy.

the glass covering the screen is real glass that's not easily scratched. the matte screen has NO protection from scratches.

So unless you're outside alot go glossy :D

If you have a apple store nearby check out their selection there. They will likely have one or two matte screened laptops.

There is nothing practical about glossy. Even typical home lighting and any source of sunlight causes intolerable glare for me. Glossy panels are like dark mirrors. They are terrible for any usage scenario that doesn't allow for complete darkness. I don't have the option to sit in the dark all day so I don't even consider glossy screens at all.

Matte all the way. Got one in my current MBP, the first time its been an "option" for me, and I couldn't be happier

I have owned tons of laptops and never scratched the screen. The beauty of a laptop is that it protects the screen when it is closed, and should only be open when you are using it (not traveling with it or transporting it).

I prefer glossy, but I also have a Moshi iVisor for when I'm outside for long periods of time.

Matte. I don't understand how people can live with the glare from glossy screens. Drives me nuts, even with somewhat dim room lighting.

yea i particular like the glossy look as it is just "glossy"
but i think i'd go with matte as it seems rather more unique?
heheh

I have a glossy screen at work (non-window facing) and although it looks slightly richer to me, I much prefer the matte I have at home. I'm so used to matte from my LCD TV's, the Macbook Pro matte looks great.

I do, however, use my laptop in high-glare area's, so I am biased to matte.

with glossy you will see the things on your screen combined with the things around you.

with matte you will see only the screen.

Because they don't do anything worthwhile and don't know what they're buying anyway.

When I used a laptop for my daily work and traveled to different offices I noticed that every area is a high glare area. Unless your work takes you to a dungeon every area produces intolerable glare on the screen. My personal laptop has a glossy screen. (I used to use it for work) and I hate that one thing about it. None of my other monitors are glossy and I'll never buy another glossy screen so long as matte screens are an option.

It's funny that this came up because I was just reading Business Solutions magazine (one for us I.T. geeks/folk) and happened upon an ad by 3M touting their latest product: a Glossy LR Protection Film, aka "a privacy filter" by most folks.

The thing about this one is that it's designed to prove "matte like properties" on glossy screens - the LR stands for low reflection, so at least to some degree it's capable of negating so much of the glossy "crap" reflections that people with glossy screens have without needing to get entirely new panels put in place.

It's just an option, I suppose. Get more info here:

http://www.3mprivacyfilter.com

I couldn't locate a specific link to the particular "Glossy LR Protection Film" the ad mentions, unfortunately. In fact, it got irritating trying to navigate their damned website... even the search function didn't return much in that area either, and yet I've got the ad right here beside me in the magazine. :(

I dig glossy. You could even say that I'm hooked on glossy (and phonics).

On a laptop? No. For my desktop(s)? Abso-fuckin'-lutely. Gloss it up.

TN? Nossir. Wouldn't have it. Both of my displays are IPS. The glossy one is actually a 21.5" LED-backlit IPS with a pixel density of 102 PPI. The other is a matte, 20" CFL-backlit IPS with a pixel density of 100 PPI. They're both great displays, but would I rather the latter be glossy? Yeah.

Matte all the way but in the right lighting environment glossy is fine. Monitor shopping. It was so easy a year ago for gaming oriented systems, just buy a big ol' 30" Apple or Dell, now there are so many things to consider in high end gaming its just insane. The monitors were THE HARDEST decision to make in building my sig rig, there simply isn't a single solution that doesn't have trade offs. I'd have LOVED to buy three 120Hz IPS desktop monitors if they existed.

Glossy for me. It's very much a preference thing. Anyone whining about glare must be using those shitty HP screens.

No, we just don't sit in the darkness of our mother's basement. :D J/K on a serious note, I don't know how people with glossy screens tolerate or fail to notice the glare. Even in standard lighting its intolerable for me.

Go to your average well lighted Best Buy, go to 27" iMac, pull up a darker screen and then read the prices on the signs behind you. ALL glossy screen reflect a good amount of light, that's why they are GLOSSY.
