I will be parting a new machine this MONDAY 3-09-09. Would like some help massaging the price out or subbing components with comparables for cost savings.

Every dollar saved is 1 day less the wife will bitch about it.

Also can I re-install my windows XP pro on a new computer? The old computer will still be in-use as a movie server. A Friend said they(XP) lock to the CPU and are not transferable? I would hate to buy Vista/XP with Windows 7 around the corner but will if i have to.

1)Gaming, photo editing, DVD ripping, MS office, web etc Pretty much everything.
2)Would like to stay under 1k total cost
3)Houston TX
4)I require CPU, MoBo, RAM, HDD, Case & PS, pretty much everything but vid card, I will be using a 4850 for a while longer.
5) Only reusing a sapphire 4850
6) Mild overclock but not going to go crazy. Wont overclock if it is going to cost me anything more initially.
7) 22" widescreen monitor willnot be changing it in the near future.
8) Will purchase tomorrow Monday 3-09-09
9) Sound built in on the MoBo all else is gravy.
10) I have XP Pro on current Machine. But will buy vista if i have too. See above comment.

** i would like to stay with, Newegg, Microcenter, Fry's, Directron, Amazon, tigerdirect.... would consider another verndor but not a fly by night company.

Powersupply is your only real, option for saving cash on this build... BFG LS 550 watt will more than enough power for your build.

Yeah the version of XP i have is the full retail version of XP Pro. I love it personally and don't feel i need anything else.... but i also don't know what i am missing from vista as i haven't messed with it.

The above listed PSU would be ok for future Vid cards? I doubt i will SLI/crossfire but my next upgrade would be vid card, and a 1.5tb HDD. Within the next 6 months.

Would saving the 40 bucks on the Motherboard and getting a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128386 be worth it?

I have almost always stayed with asus when buying boards but am not apposed to buy something else.

If it was me, I would download Windows 7 beta x64 and run it till it goes rtm. Then buy windows 7.

With your proposed setup, regardless of which OS you choose, you should get a 64-bit operating system. A 32-bit OS will only access a total of 4GB of system memory, and it would subtract the amount of "usable" RAM by the memory taken up by other components (like your video card).

Since there is no guarantee as to when the final version of Windows 7 will arrive, I recommend getting Vista now. If you're willing to work with beta software, you're more than welcome to stick with the 64-bit beta of Windows 7.

If you aren't planning any crazy overclocking and you don't need Tri-SLI or CF, go ahead and go with the cheaper board.

I agree with Danny, tiraides, and pc user.

If you can live with only half of your RAM being utilized until Win7 comes out, then use XP for now, and buy Win7 64-bit when its released. If you're really trying to save money, use Win7 beta until its actually released. Win7 runs smoother than Vista, but its not like your new hardware is gonna have a problem with Vista.

Well I pulled the trigger, thanks for the advice i think i picked up a pretty nice machine for a pretty decent price. For the same machine from a builder it would have run about 2k. Here is the final build.

Total Cost= 984.23 ....getting cheaper every build.

CPU= Intel I7 920 http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0300438

Ram= 6gb G.Skill 1366 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231225
MoBo= Asus P6t http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131359
CDR= Sammy 22x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151173

HD= WD 640 black http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319

PSU= BFG Tech LS550
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817702008
OS= Win Vista Home 64 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488
Case= CM Cent 590 http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0282871

I took your advice on the PS and decided to stay with the P6t for RAM upgrade...i see another 6gb in my recent future.

I went ahead and grabbed the vista.... i have never been big on being the guinea pig.

Thanks again guys ill let you know what it looks like when i get it all together and put in its home.
