The combat was essentially unchanged from ME2 to ME3. Both games limit you to a single story mission at a time, so ME2 isn't really much more of an RPG than ME3. ME3 did have much better weapon customization. Aside from that, the only major differences was ME3 had a focused story longer in length but ME2 had more side quests.

Yes that is true. I don't remember weapon customization in ME3. Maybe because it wasn't that remarkable. I liked the characters, the maps, the missions much more in ME2.
 
It wasn't all that remarkable, but it was certainly better than the first two games. In ME2 you were essentially stuck with a few weapons for the entire game. ME3 made them feel more unique. I wasn't a fan of most the characters ME2 introduced. Most of them belonged in a mental asylum and not on a warship. :p But probably the biggest letdown about them is that their abilities were more or less useless. Despite being toted as a great edition for Shepard's crew they were very generic and didn't offer anything once you had them. Which is why it just felt like filler content trying to prop up an otherwise limited story. Not nearly as bad as the "go here and fetch X" repetitive quests most games have these days. But the side stories went off on random tangents that didn't matter and weren't really that unique or interesting.

That is why, IMO, aside from the combat ME1 was the best game in the series.
 
ME1 had the best story / player engagement by far. It was more like a well written novel / film than a game.

Some of the gameplay systems were buggered though - I'd love to see an ME1 remake with a better inventory, control system and the combat from ME2 or ME3.

ME3 definitely had weapon customization. It was far better than what ME1 offered in that regard. The DLC's of course added more weapon mods and weapons themselves. ME2 and ME3 both were often more similar than not in mission design. The main difference is that ME3 integrated story and more cut scenes into the missions. This made them feel a little more linear, even though they really weren't. ME3 also threw you into combat immediately and never really let you just walk around without shit trying to kill you. As the series progressed, there was less exploration of the environment. ME1 was almost a bit too open at times. The exploration in it felt forced as a way to make up for the fact that the game had relatively little actual content. This is why I didn't mind ME2's more linear nature. ME2 and ME3 had far more actual content in them than the first game did. They just suffered story wise, but were otherwise improvements in every area imaginable.

I thought ME2 handled the characters well, despite having so many of them. Unfortunately, we got short changed with some of them in ME3 as they had to be treated more generically given that any combination of them could have been killed in ME2. We also got Liara forced on us in ME3, filling the same role Miranda did in ME2 as Liara was the only character in ME2 immune to death.
 
I have a family member playing catch up. I see a Mass Effect Trilogy installment on Origin for $30. Does that everything and the kitchen sink in it for all three games?
 
I don't think it includes DLC for any of them. That's all still separate last I checked.

EDIT: The store page specifically mentions that it comes with the ME1 DLC. ME2 and ME3 are likely MIA.

For Mass Effect 3, Online Pass will be included granting players access to co-op multiplayer.

  • On Xbox 360, Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station are not included, however they are available as stand-alone downloads through Xbox LIVE. For Mass Effect 2, Cerberus Network will be included and Online Pass will be included for Mass Effect 3. If I read this right, there is some DLC that is not included there on the PC version.

I got to disagree with you on this. I loved the Heat mechanic in the first game and granted I may have been the only one, however the upgrade/customization was far greater as a result. you could build an auto rifle that never overheated, or a shotgun that hit like a rocket launcher. ignoring ME2 as it had basically nothing, in ME3, I found myself using the same upgrades no matter the gun. the only thing ME3 did was make it simpler in that upgrades were available for all, not needing individual ones.

I don't agree with all of that. I get what your saying about heat and making some guns hit like rocket launchers, but I don't necessarily think it was for the better. ME1 had too many choices, and too many ammunition opitons etc. As for ME3, when you really get down to making the weapons more effective, some of them didn't really benefit from the same upgrades. For example, guns with natural penetration characteristics didn't necessarily need penetration mods. Some weapons like the Javelin didn't benefit from magazine upgrades, but penetration upgrades made it amazing for taking out enemies behind cover.
 
ME1 had a horrible inventory system and all the weapons were essentially the same thing with different colors. You'd go through 4-6 different versions of the exact same thing with minor increases in stats. Everything felt very lame and the over heating seemed to have been a result of not having the time to animate a bunch of weapons. ME1 had the best story by far, but the combat (and inventory) was the worst.

I actually did like how a lot of the missions in ME1 built up before the combat. Going to the snow planet before taking the Mako to the Rachnai (spelling) infected area was fun. ME2 and 3 did throw you into combat quicker. Something I never noticed until you pointed it out.
 
Every time a Mass Effect thread gets created it must send a notification to a legion of impossible to please people.

Mass Effect wasn't perfect but it was a great ride. To say it was shit because of the weak ending is just nuts.

DA2 wasn't very good, but I at least was able to complete a couple of playthroughs of it and somewhat enjoy it.

I've had DA:I since launch and it's still sitting incomplete and likely will never be completed, that just how much I disliked the game as a whole.

I don't have high hopes for ME as a series going forward unfortunately. I'd love to be proven wrong though.
 
TBH I'm sort of the same... I completed DA2 and not DAI but DA2 was just as meh, but a shorter meh. While DAI.... I went for the dragons, then after they all died... I tried to beat the game but got bored.

However, it took me forever to beat DAO so.... the story never caught me. Only reason I even beat DAO was because I had about 10 mods that were way harder than the game, but ultimately made me over powered after beating it that I figured why not just beat the game afterwards.
 
I just hope they keep it within the scope of the series gameplay wise. Not too grindy (think MGSV) and an action RPG/shooter hybrid. Fewer high quality missions and 20-30 hours in length. Not few story based missions and a bunch of fetch quests which seems to be the rage these days in SP games.
 
fuck that 20-30 hours in length. double that. more high quality missions, more character missions. i want side quests to be on par the ME2 DLC stories. i didn't mind the planet scan based fetch quests in ME3, because it was an effective means of incentivizing exploration, just only require me to go back to the hub after major story plots and we'll be fine.
 
What exploration was there in ME3? Launch 100 probes and find 2 to 3 side quests? Referencing ME3 side quests and "exploration" is probably the worst thing to do. The majority amounted to listening in on someones phone call, launching a probe, and then walking up to them to complete the quest. I would hate to shift through an additional 20-30 hours of that crap just to make the game longer for no reason. Quality over quantity.
 
I just want high quality writing/story, lots of companion quests with in-depth story, varied geographical planets that have lots to explore with some good dungeons and some citadel like space stations. Also some comedy like punching reporters in the face :).
 
TBH I want it to be like DA:I. Loved the game and all the DLC's, was a damn good game (some things did suck, but weren't horrible to make it a crappy game).

REALLY looking forward to this game.

I hope they do more quality side quests and don't go off of random tangents for a nut job cast like in ME2. Leviathan, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Omega, and whatnot were great quests. I know they were DLCs, but I'd like to see side quests with meaningful additions to the story opposed to hearing a lizard man drone on about his whiny son turning out to be a horrible person because he followed his fathers footsteps. Yawn, same basic story retold a million times. Leviathan and Shadow Broker added a lot to the unique universe of the game.

But seriously, coming away from it all that was in my head was "This is a spiritual successor to Mass Effect 1. This is what ME1 was envisioned to be".

Ahh forgot about shadow broker, that was awesome! As was Leviathan. Good memories and great writing, hopefully they do more of that.

I did like ME1 but... planet exploration felt really cheap and it was rather tedious to be honest. ME2 was much better.

By the sounds of it this could end up being DA:I in space and that would be a horrible thing.
 
You preferred the planet scanning game in ME2 to the bounce over rocks in the Mako in ME1? really?

I really don't get why someone wouldn't want the scope of DA:I for this. while I wasn't too keen on the larger plot line of DA:I (it would have served ME2/ME3 better) the over abundance of things to explore and find was not a bad thing

I agree. The problem with DAI was the huge world was under developed. It needed more content as it felt dead in many areas

It was much faster way to get resources. Besides, if the planet didn't have any side missions you knew it instantly. If it had something interesting there was this distress beacon thing. ME2 side missions were on another level compared to ME1. ME1 side missions and planets were copy paste jobs where someone played a bit with Unreal Editor.

Did you even take a moment to do some of the better quests? Ultimately I somewhat agree but DAI war room system would really shine in ME4 but with enough content.

Agree about the war room system in DAI, I found it was a cool mechanism to tie together mini story-lines and side quests to the greater plot. I do think that DAI felt a bit sparse in places and some of the quests were tedious but overall it was an enjoyable game for sure.

What would be really awesome is Mass Effect with Witcher 3 level detail in side quests and in terms of density of content in the world :)
