Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

I caved and preordered it a few days ago, also. I've wasted more money in worse ways and didn't get nearly as much enjoyment as I'll get from ME3. Yeah, I'm probably supporting the renovation of some corporate EA asshat's second house (located in Monaco, no less), but who really cares? The EA asshat will get his money from me or somebody else -- likely tax evasion (though not in Monaco; I think he's going to eventually relocate to Monaco full-time, thus why he wants to get his house there renovated) -- so I'm really doing a service to the people of the United States by keeping sociopathic asshats who work for EA in line.

haha yeah, that's what I kept telling myself too. Fuck it. the game will be worth it I'm sure.

I've pre-ordered the deluxe edition..

Well, I feel like a moron but couldn't help it. the thought of a robo-dog get the better of me.

I got the DDE of DA: O and ME2, missed the stupid pre-order edition of DA2 and still regret it (not enough to buy the Exiled Prince mind you, but enough that it bugs me). The $80 price tag on the DDE stopped me for a couple weeks, but then I said screw it I'm buying the game anyway so I might as well get the DDE.

The console versions are most definitely affecting the PC version. One of the Bioware devs explicitly stated they had to cut out certain Shep animations to free up memory (the holstering animation at 1.5MB). With gaming PCs having 2GB of memory as the very lowest these days and many having between 4 and 16GBs, why do you think they had to reduce the memory footprint? Because the development is unified with the consoles. There will be fewer animations in the game on the PC because consoles don't have enough working memory to support them.

Instead of LEAVING them (many were already made from ME2!) on the PC and cutting them for the consoles, they were simply scrapped across all platforms.

Yay consoles... and MS and Sony don't intend on releasing updated consoles anytime soon. Hello stagnation :)

Actually we'll probably hear something from MS this year at E3. They're not going to give Nintendo two free years and announce it next year. Sony...Who the hell knows what Sony is up to. Knowing them they'll think sticking to 10 years is a great idea and not announce anything until next year or the year after.

You might be able to find the PS3 edition, but most PC/360 versions are out of stock everywhere. Good luck hunting!

Yep. If you're going to buy it on the PC and want all the extras it's best to just go for the DDE from either Origin or Amazon.

I went physical collector's edition from Amazon. Glad I jumped on it when I did.

I did too. In fact the first day or so that preorders were available, I ordered one.

Same here. In this day and age of Digital Distribution, there's still something satisfying about holding the product in your hands. Especially when it's packaged with a ton of goodies inside a nice metallic case.

Well in this case it came with a few little extras in physical form. I thought: "Why not?"

I gave up buying physical PC games a couple years ago. I think the last one I bought was Mafia 2. I have a small apartment so I really don't have room for tons of game boxes and pretty much every new game I care out is on Steam or Origin or Amazon download so I don't see the need to own physical copies anymore. Games are inherently a digital medium anyway. It's not like a book where you get a different feeling from having the real thing versus the detachment of an ebook.

I generally don' by physical copies of games anymore, but I wanted a physical copy of this game as I am a huge fan of the series.

I preordered a physical CE from K-mart of all places. I've had luck getting hard-to-find stuff from there in the past, so I hope this also works out. The website said I should have it between March 6-8; something tells me, however, that that's not likely to happen.

Amazon's DD is probably the best deal since you get "From Ashes" and also the $10 credit.

Every digital deluxe version includes From Ashes no matter where you buy it from.

I think his point is the $10 credit. If you are ordering from Origin versus Amazon, you are basically paying $16+ for the exclusive shotgun once sales tax fits in.

That's true. My post was poorly worded. But at Amazon you get the basic game ($59.99) plus the DLC ($10) plus the credit ($10) plus the collectors junk, albeit "digital" (20). If you're buying from Amazon, it doesn't really make sense to just buy the regular edition at 59.99.

I went with the GameStop pre-order because you get the M55 Argus plus N7 Valkyrie Rifle and N7 Defender Armor...only thing is no 'From Ashes' DLC...but the DLC purchased separately costs $10...so the Collector's Edition at $79.99 is $20 more then the Standard Edition...so that means $10 for the DLC and an additional $10 for the bonus contents

the bonus content has no value to me so I'm going with the GameStop pre-order as it has more in-game value

Yeah. I'm debating canceling my Origin pre-order and going with the Amazon one.

I just finished ME2 a few days ago and although I agree that the 'retrieve this person' missions were repetitive they were still a lot of fun...this is mainly because the ME characters and universe are so expertly crafted...every race, character etc is so damn interesting with tons of backstory...each of your squadmates have such unique personalities and the voice acting made it even better

ME2 improved upon ME1 in almost every way...the interrupt system, cover system (while not ideal was still well done), planet scanning versus Mako driving etc...yes they dumbed down/streamlined a lot of the RPG elements but the quality of the overall gameworld far exceeded any negatives

I don't think planet-scanning was an improvement over Mako driving at all. That's why I mod all my saves to give me more of every mineral than I'll ever need. It's a crappy, uninteresting timesink where at least Mako driving had an element of exploration to it.

Apparently in ME3 there's still planet scanning, and..........get ready for it.......scanning BETWEEN planets in open space where you can get attacked by Reapers!

Dunno how true that is, but it has a ring of truth to it based on needing resources to win the war.

GIbbed is planning an ME3 save game editor still, which would make that easy peasy, but not much fun.

On your 3rd and 4th playthrough is when scanning for crap gets really really old.

Yeah, basically you send out a scanning pulse in the system, which reveals points of interest within a radius. No need to orbit each planet individually. As you send out scanning pulses, the Reapers on patrol in that system become more aware of you. Eventually they catch on and start to chase you and you've got to GTFO.

Don't know how it works beyond that. I imagine you have to go to another system until your awareness level cools off.

I don't think I've ever cheated my way through a game, but if this is true, I'm modding my save file.

The planet scanning wasn't so bad so long as you realized that scanning every planet was worthless. I found out that once you had about 150,000 units of most resources, you didn't need to bother anymore. You needed far less element zero BTW. 60,000 or so is enough. I can hit the number needed for all the necessary upgrades throughout the entire game in about an hour or so. So I'd just do it while I was watching TV or something and knock it out. So it wasn't nearly as intrusive to me. Furthermore, you only needed to click on a planet to see if there was an anomaly or some reason to land on it. So touching every planet to find a mission was necessary, but you didn't have to go through the hassle of scanning each one. From what I saw on the console versions, scanning was far less excruciating on the PC side.

I think it's an interesting mechanic to add in and I'll give it a shot for a while before I pass judgement. I was never big on any of the resource gathering stuff, it just felt kind of out of place.

Now, if I could do like SWtOR and send out companions to gather stuff and while they were gone I couldnt use them in my squad or something, now that would be nice and I could live with that sort of mechanic.

x2. I listened to music while I did it. Driving the mako over untraversable terrain was far worse, IMO.

Exactly, driving Mako to explore the planet was irritating, scanning was much faster, and, as Dan stated, you didn't need to scan every single planet.

Damn... it's 9 days till it's launched, and I can't wait :p (9th March release for Europe)

I think we get it on the 7th here. So only 8 days (including today) for me.

Well I ordered a physical copy from Amazon. I selected their release day delivery, so I'll get it on the 7th.

If you have Prime you should get it on the 6th, at least that has been my experience with Amazon release day delivery.

Aye it should ship on the 5th overnight delivery.

Then it's just up to UPS to not fuck up. :p
