Manually start/shutdown SMP client for the evening?

Hey all... I tried to set up F@H SMP for my Q6600 main gaming rig but ran into a huge issue getting it to yield CPU properly even on Idle priority setting, which neutered my gaming performance. I just got annoyed with the hassle and uninstalled it, but the idea recently occurred to me of having it manually start when I want to for the evening (i.e. when I'm going to bed) and then just turning it off in the morning. Is there a way to do this with the SMP client under Vista x64? I've got an error-free/stable Q6600 @ 3.24ghz with 4GB RAM here that can't fold right now .

While not officially supported, you could install the client as a service, and then use a scheduled task or batch files to start and stop the service.

However, the SMP client has VERY short deadlines. You probably won't make the deadlines running less that 12 hours a day. You may be better off with a couple CPU clients or a GPU client, if you have an ATI GPU.

Hmmm, I think I'll just use four "single-CPU" clients (my rig has 2x 8800GT 512's, so they're not ATI and won't work with the GPU client) and start them/turn them off manually each night/morning. I appreciate your post .

I dont know if it will work/run with Vista but I use "SMP Seesaw Pro" when I game on my Dual-Dual Opetrons with folding running in the background.

That way I can isolate the game on one or two cores as needed and run Windoze XP64 & Folding on whats left.

I get better gaming and better folding times that way and just reset everything back to 4 cores when I finish.
