The German authorities let some guy off the hook after he launched his PC through a window in the middle of the night. Why? The police spokesperson said “Who hasn't felt like doing that?"

Police in the northern city of Hanover said they would not press charges after responding to calls made by residents in an apartment block who were woken by a loud crash in the early hours of Saturday.

I have thought about it once or twice. Would never do it for the fact of cleanup, and cost.

He was probably thinking "damn WIndows Vista nag screens!......Windows?..windows? window!!"

"How to make your computer go faster"

1. Take computer to window.
2. Drop computer
3. The higher you are, the faster it goes!

:p

Some poster from the hardforums experienced his pc being thrown out of a high rise by an ex. The thing is, these nutbags fail to realize is that people may be walking below.

I think he still should be heavily fined and let go with a stern warning.... as people were interrupted, police had to come out, etc etc etc. I would even go as far as to have him evicted... he's obviously reckless.

I must agree, even though everything is fine (other than the computer), it could have been a lot worse. Plus time wasted wasted on the authorities parts in that they had to come there and talk to him. Maybe a night in jail would have been fine just to let him calm down probably.

Actually that isn't true. At some point the drag force on the falling computer will equal the weight of the object minus the buoyant force caused by the air. The velocity of the falling computer will reach a constant speed.
This is really easy to show if you find the equation of motion for the falling computer, using Newton's second law F=ma. You will obtain an easily solved differential equation. If you then take the limit of the solution as t approaches infinity, the terminal velocity is easily seen.

Though this is true, LeTUOtter, is also correct that the higher you are the faster. In the sense that you must be higher for the object to reach terminal velocity. So fact if he were on one story compared to the tenth story it would be traveling faster. :D

Yes but at some point the computer WILL stop accelerating. Granted at the small distance of a couple stories or so you won't reach terminal velocity, but you will during a long fall.

I think windows will crash trying to go that fast. There is only so far you can overclock it.

There is terminal velocity... I wonder if you could overclock terminal velocity. :D

Oh for the love of pete, I KNOW all about terminal velocity, thanks. It was just supposed to be a humorous statement, since most people don't throw computers out of windows above 150 stories or whatever you'd need to actually HIT terminal velocity. Never thought my quip would be a geek magnet... :p

P.S. No need to hate, I'm a science geek too. ;)

rofl

i wish someone recorded this

would have been a great youtube video

And if that's not the most obvious photochop job I've ever seen...

It's legit. It was an MR2 project car that idels at 50Mph.

Problem is that the car is hardly practical and couldn't be used on the roads with the jets functional. It was to prove a point type concept. The guy didn't get an insane amount of money from it either, he lost more putting into the project then he got out of it.

There is also another guy who did it for promotional purposes with a VW beetle... just used one jet though.

Who's to say he didn't look before tossing it? And it was early morning too.

Wow, this is big news? If I had known, I would have called a press-conferance when it happened to me a couple of years ago. It almost hit my car as I was driving by.

It still works (after some soldering repair) btw....its in the next room.

I'd hate to be your neighbor. Let me guess - no loud music and lights out after 10:00pm?

Hmmmm...loud music that if polite about most people will turn if asked properly, or throwing something that could potentially kill someone out a window...that is a tough choice on where I want to live.

I'm surprised with how crazy Germany is with environmental laws, that he wasn't fined for letting "dangerous chemicals" out into the world.

OT:

If you want to be an inconsiderate prick and keep people up all night then go buy a damn house or realize that you aren't the only person that matters. Simple as that really.

I once had some downstairs neighbors who would play loud bass music when I was trying to sleep. One night at about 11:30PM, in the middle of the week, I finally got tired of it and spent about 30 minutes taking my subwoofers out of my car, dragging them upstairs, hooking up two car batteries to them and wiring it in to my pc. Needless to say, they stopped that shit after more than 2000W of bass shook the entire building, knocking everything to the ground.

Haha, how hard up do you have to be to nearly get nailed by a large falling object, and think to yourself "ooh, free computer!" :D

Looking doesn't help. Time of the day it doesn't matter. So basically what you are saying is that you can do what you want, as long as it's early in the morning and you look first?

I'd hate to be your neighbor. Let me guess - no loud music and lights out after 10:00pm?

Comparing loud music to a potential fatal accident where the cops has to show up with their sirens, investigate, question neighbors, then the media frenzy.... is nothing like some old folk cranking up the tunes or needing to turn off their lights at 10pm.

basically yes,no one was hurt,he's out a computer and the only one affected was this person.they didn't say what floor he was on,may have been ground level.

what your advocating is a nanny state.I believe that you should be able to do what you want as long as it doesn't negatively some one else.

So you mean it's not a negative impact on you waking up in the crack of morning to a bunch noise and racketing? Nor is waking up to a bunch of police sirens or the knock of a police officer on your door to question you about what happened and if you noticed the situation? Does the fact that the tax payers (read: you and me) are paying to send police out who could have been protecting the streets from criminals to this nut bags house because of a call?

Well if thats not a negative to you nor does it impact you, then I guess I can't argue with that.

Obviously it was a negative on somone, as they called the police.

Also, it's not a nanny state I'm advocating. It's a state of self responsibility and courtesy to your fellow citizen and giving those citizens the right to live their life peacefully without having to wake up in the night because someone else was having a bad day and for them to potentially pay the ultimate price because someone else couldn't contain their own anger.

So with your logic and argument, should those people who shoots guns in apartment in range or anger be arrested or let go... after all, they didn't shoot anyone and they should just pay for the damage or repair the damage?

2 different situations, firing a gun into an apartment and throwing a computer out a window i don't consider the same. Not too long ago, a woman lost her unborn baby because someone fired a gun into her apartment while she slept and hit her in the stomach. too many people have been hurt or killed here in Dallas by people firing guns in the air and caring where the bullet comes down.Throwing a pc out the window you have more control over where it lands.
