Man Hurls Computer Through Window

2 different situations, firing a gun into an apartment and throwing a computer out a window i don't consider the same. Not too long ago, a woman lost her unborn baby because someone fired a gun into her apartment while she slept and hit her in the stomach. too many people have been hurt or killed here in Dallas by people firing guns in the air and caring where the bullet comes down.Throwing a pc out the window you have more control over where it lands.

WRONG!
Even though you have control over the object up until you release it from your hands, beyond that it is a free falling object just the same as a bullet shot into the air. Though theoretically this object will fall straight down, what if it hits a piece of the wall that sticks out and bounces into the street hitting a car...while the analogy is not perfect both are still dangerous.

yeah, the bullet -if fired straight into the air would give you a welt on your head for a week

this is ridiculous, whining and complaining about a computer being thrown out a window... I'm sure the guy looked before he threw it.. seriously how childish are we to castigate someone for doing something as humorous as this.

Do you know much about what happens when a bullet is shot upwards, and the effects on its downward path and speed? There are many factors, but unless the bullet hits you around the peak of its curve where it loses almost all momentum it is going to do a lot more than just leave a welt.

You do not know if he looked before he threw it, many people who are enraged do things without actual conscience thought or knowledge of what they have done until after the fact.

Yeah, I know a lot about it actually, I wrote a physics paper about it. terminal velocity on a bullet is similar to a penny.. it would just leave a welt. Now, if the bullet is fired at an extreme angle, like 45* or greater then you would have a risk of injury or death, but from a vertical path, nothing more than a welt.

Jeez, even the Mythbusters proved that one. Vertical path = no significant damage.

You consider them different because it's based on your experience? Or do you consider them different because one is free falling and the other one is self propelled?

You don't have accurate control on where something lands unless if you did an actual calculation on the energy exerted upon the monitor, the environmental factors, other factors such as balconies or objects attached to the building, and direction of of the people below including their speed and the assumption of their reaction as a monitor or system is coming down at them sealing their fate. You would also need to know angels and other things... so it's impossible to know where it's going to land without some forethought... it's further impossible to know if someone wont be taking a step below.

What appears clear may not be clear and people can move around in your calculation, making it a dangerous assumption that could cost someone their life.

Oh and you don't think a 45lb computer (give and take) landing on someone's head wont kill them but a randomly fired bullet will?

Firing a bullet which has a very straight trajectory path has better control on where an object tossed out the window lands... as a bullet travels at a rapid pace, thus the ability for someone to move into the path of said object at the time of discharge is slim to none. So the argument can work both ways. Obviously, just as a tossing of a computer, a bullet direction varies heavily on the environment and the direction, energy, etc. But both can result in fatalities and both can have varying factors with no true known result without prior testing and calculation.

Agreed.
People here just assume that he looked, made sure no one was around, calculated his throw, and tossed it. In rage and anger, people just throw, they don't care. If they cared, they wouldn't be throwing the PC out the window anyways.... most likely a nice swift kick and thats the end of it... or the prompt removal of the computer to the garbage can.

Has anyone even considered this guy could have been on the first floor and the computer merely rolled off some bushes and into the adjacent street?

The thing that upsets me about this article is that someone acted irresponsibly, and instead of being punished in some fashion, he gets a pat on the back and it's made humorous.

Kinda like when a person pulled a gun on me in a road rage incident, when I called 911 the woman on the other line said "Sir, just don't worry, leave him alone, some people have a bad day". You do not let any irresponsible people not pay for their price, next time, in my case, he actually fires or misfires the gun, killing someone.

People should take responsibility for thier actions and face the consequences when they are responsible.

the fact is, it is humorous. And I dont think this guy is a habitual computer thrower which you can put into a 3 step program. I think people need to just chill the hell out, and laugh a little.. the story is funny. Everyone in the US it seem gets pissed off just to get pissed off, and frankly It's pissing me off.

It's always funny until someone gets hurt...

So now you chose to label everyone who takes things seriously such as this reckless behavior as Americans?...nice.

Whew, man it happens so fast I sometimes don't even notice it! You've found another thing to be pissed off about! This is the kind of crap I'm talking about.

Haha, how hard up do you have to be to nearly get nailed by a large falling object, and think to yourself "ooh, free computer!" :D

Actually, I picked it up, and was going to throw it at the dope who threw it out of a third floor window without thought to the street right in front of his front-door.....but he wouldn't come down or answer the door (I did plenty of yelling, and ringing the doorbell constantly for a few minutes[I could hear it from the porch]). THEN I looked at it as I held it and figured - what the heck, I tinker with it and see if there's anything good on the HDD/etc...maybe a little revenge material......post his pics on the web to laugh at or something. The drive didn't survive though.
