Man Cave Project

I would have waited for one to show up on craigslist but I need a specific corner. I picked up my first desk on craigslist. I only needed the 3 legs top and frame so I was able to get out $200 lighter.

Baller! Did you have to do anything in particular to get Ubuntu to play nice with all 3 displays?

I actually didn't do the tests myself. A friend of mine did the tests and I posted the videos. I have a write up on my site.

Just when I think that I am getting close to getting done I come up with another idea or have to change something around.

Today I was sitting at my desk prepping a couple Exchange servers when I decided that I didn't like the look of the power and video cables zip tied to the back of the monitor stand. I decided that I would cut the pipe down a bit more and then run all the cabling down the inside of the pipe.

I had to pull the monitor stand apart, cut the the desk out from the center of the flange and then put it all back together. Unfortunately a DVI cable will not fit down the center of a 1.5" galvanized steel pipe so I have to pick up a DVI to Displayport cable so that I can finish up. The pictures I took are without the DVI cable laying across the desk until the other cable arrives.

To help clean things up a bit I also mounted my speaker volume control under the desk along with the wireless mouse transceiver. I also plan to move the USB Hub/Desk grommet up in between the keyboard and monitors. That way I have easier access to those ports and the keyboard cable can be shortened up a bit.

Is the phone running SIP? If so, how did you flash it? I cannot get access to a CUCM. All Avaya.
 
That phone is hooked up to an ASA linked back to the office via VPN. Nothing quite like being available anywhere and anytime.
 
If you find a way to do it let me know. My knowledge of Cisco VOIP products is pretty low.
 
Moved the USB hub forward, ordered a few longer cables and picked up an Ikea Stolmen Shelf that I am going to use to hold all my spare keyboards. I also ordered a brushed aluminum blind so people can peer into the window.

I am in the process of stripping the poles and hardware down to raw aluminum. I will have to paint a couple small pieces of plastic hardware to match.
 
I've been running 3x portrait mode for a little while now. The viewing angles give you issues once in a while, but I've adjusted to 3600x1920 quite well :D

My only problem with it is remote desktop connections. I need my the screens or my remote machines wider than 1080 and don't like stretching across bezels. Otherwise I would have my monitors in the same configuration.

As mentioned earlier I am in the process of building a keyboard shelf for my collection of keyboards. I am using part of the Ikea Stolmen collection to build this. It used to come in brushed aluminum but now is sold with a cream white powder coating. I am working to get that powder coating removed. The brackets cleaned right up with a can of paint stripper. The poles on the other hand have been difficult. At this time they are slathered in aircraft stripper and wrapped in Saran Wrap. When I looked this morning it looked pretty good. I'm thinking I'll run them to the car wash after work and hit them with the pressure washer.
 
That took far more work thank I would have liked. It took 6 + coats of aircraft paint stripper to get everything off the posts. The brackets were much easier. I just painted the shelves as they are steel and it wouldn't have made much sense to strip and repaint. I still need a couple more shelves for keyboards and I may also put some books up there too.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I grabbed a couple more shelves and some brackets earlier today. Because the brackets strip so easily I was able to get them done and shelves up. I will work on some more pics once I bring home a few more of my keyboards from the office.

ETA: I'll be getting my Lian Li PC-V2100+ back this coming weekend. I made the mistake of selling it to be Brother In Law and he no longer wants it. I miss that case! Maybe I need a shelf for my retired Lian Li cases too..... :)

Hang them from the wall, After all the old lian li cases are art.
 
Hung this at the back of the room. Still haven't found any chairs for back their yet. Need to find something that is comfortable but won't over fill the room.

I do a bunch of sandboxing / experimenting / playing at home and I host a lot of my own 'cloud' services for personal use. This helps advance my career and keeps me interested in the field.

Keyboards starting at the top

Apple (Nothing special, just tossed it up there)
Noppoo Choc Cherry with blue switches
Cherrry POS keyboard with CC Scanner
Microsoft Mechanical (forget who makes it for them)
 
I certainly didn't need another project but I had an idea today. I got to looking at the wire hanger at the back of the room and thought "Hey, it would be cool to put in another one and then charge them with low voltage so LEDs could be hung from them.". I happen to have another line so I hung it above the other one. I am going to secure a project box to the wall between the lines and then run leads with alligator clips to each of them, 1 + and 1 -. Then I'll pick up a bunch of different color LEDs and attach leads to them so they can be hung from the top line and then lay across the bottom. I'll make the leads different lengths so the LEDs will be at random distances between the lines. I'll make up a bunch of them and leave them on a peg or something so friends and family can play around with them. I'm thinking 2 or 4 D cell batteries should do the trick for power.

I've been in a house here in Australia that has a very similar thing happening, they have two stainless steel rods running above the kitchen island bench with ELV running through them then LED Downlights connected to the rod's.

Years ago I had lighting similar to what you are talking about. That gave me an idea for another room that I used to have. I charged two steel cables with 12v and then used cold cathodes for lighting.
 
I really should complete my other projects before starting another.

I bought this Lian Li mouse pad years ago an it was far to small to use as a mouse pad so I have always used it as a drink coaster. Yesterday I got the idea that it would be nice to have an audio/mic connector up on the desk and started looking for one that I could mount. I decided that I would bolt the mouse pad to desk and mount a audio/mic bulkhead to it. While I am at that I may as well put in a power and reset button back to the computer too. I am going to use a couple Bulgin switches for that.

Awesome setup you have there man..... I noticed the book, how is Ghost in the Wires? That's the only book I've actually wanted to buy this past year....
 
So far it's been really good. I really haven't dug into it yet as I have a lot of other things going on. I was just stoked that Kevin signed it at Defcon!
