Ok guys,

I finally have decided to make the switch from AMD to the Core 2 Duo e6300. I have been lurking in the Intel section since C2D came out and have been thrilled at the overclocking resulting in performance jumps worth hundreds of dollars compared to stock higher-level CPU's. I was considering the following setup:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813131030

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819115005

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835185122

I was wondering what kind of RAM I should use to achieve a decent overclock (reasonably priced ram). I am shooting for at least 2.8ghz but I would like to break into the 3ghz range.

PS: I plan on keeping the rest of the system and getting a SATA HD to keep 2 HD's and my DVD drive running. Also, does this Motherboard support Floppy disk drives? Will I need an aftermarket NB cooler to hit 3ghz?

I dont have an asus board so dont know off the top of my head

BUT, for 3GHz and E6300 with locked multi of x7 you will have to run a FSB of 429MHz.

so now it depends on what memory dividers are available, on a 1:1 memory divider (sometimes shown as 2:1, cause its DDR I guess) that means the memory will run at 429 x 2 = 958 MHz

Thats a hell of a strech for anything other than DDR 800 (PC6400) memory or better.

Now if your board has a divider that willl underclock the memory you are golden .

Download the manual and see. Then you can make a good engineering decision based on facts.

Do you know if there are any motherboards with memory underclocking? I can't believe all the C2d's are being held back by that.

No i965 supports running the RAM slower than the FSB=P

So I should spend the extra cash and get a decent set of DDR800?

Yea, GSkill HZ or better, the rest of the GSkill is shit!:(

If I get the patriot at what point do you think it will hold back my overclock? Newegg is out of it till October 2nd, are there any other retailers with this exact RAM for a decent price?

everyone raves about that patriot RAM. Check the overclock thread and look at what RAM they used.

well monarch wants close to double newegg's price, and zzf (oos)wants $100 more than newegg. there are some smaller places with it in stock (according to google) but you never know about their shipping, etc. wait for the 2nd.
you have memory dividers. at no point will it hold back your overclock. anyway, up until now, it clocks almost as high as the HZ, but with slightly looser timings (not an issue with c2d).
it should hold at 1/1 until 500mhz fsb and maybe a little more.

for some reason, it is not represented too well in the database. looks like corsair and g.skill, with ocz and some team. check the reviews at newegg, and any review you can google. the price of team skyrocketed after it was on a couple threads at xs. the g.skill
still around $270, i got it for $240 a few months ago, all ddr2 prices going up. i dont know which corsair or ocz they are using but according to newegg people are receivng some dead ocz gold stix. ocz has great customer service, absolutely top shelf.

Thats easy to say when you don't have to spend $100 more... :p

Man, pricegrabber showed clubit.com having the patriot set for $176 but on their site it says $27X. I don't want to pay ~100 dollars more for something that was under 200 two months ago and will be later this year probably.

I need some sort of sale before now and wednesday.

hmm.. i've heard of compatiblility issues with the G.Skill. Maybe not for this board, but may be for others, just to keep that in mind. I'd say Team Xtreme DDR2 667. Before you guys all try to defeat that suggestion, Team xtreme DDR2 667 uses the exact same IC's as corsair's XMS PC2 8500 ram sticks. I've seen guys hit up to around 1100mhz on them, and a gb is about 114 dollars on tankguys.com .

Hopefully newegg (or someone) will get the Ninja's in stock at some point. They had an arrival date online of 9/21 and now they are not showing any date. They are just not in stock anywhere. I have one with a worn out spring, and wanted to get a replacement, but couldn't find one anywhere. I finally found a Thermalright Ultra 120 at ONE vendor. Nobody has those in stock anywhere either.

IMHO, anyone who buys from Monarch deserves what they get. I had a couple of less than desirable experiences with them. Never again.

Check their 6 month resellerratings.com rating at:
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2079.html

A 5.46 out of 10.00 based on 296 reviews. That is just one horrible rating.

Good luck with your C2D setup!!

Oh, and this is my RAM of choice:

A "pinch" on the pricey side, but it should handle just about any situation very well.

I found a set of the 1.8v DDR2 5300 Patriot for $200. When they get them in stock I am going to pick up a set. I have heard that people were getting 950mhz+ on them. I am debating spending the extra $50 on an e6400 to garauntee that the ram won't be the limiting factor.

2x1GB OCZ PC2-7200 (900MHz) EPP memory. It will work fine on the P965 Express chipset. I had amazing results using that ram on the Biostar TForce P965 Deluxe.

The timings aren't bad on the stuff either. I also got it to go to go PC 8000 speeds on the above mentioned motherboard. The price is right too if you know where to find it. I got my sticks at Fry's pretty cheap.

How about spending an extra $45 on the 6400, which will make you only need 400FSB for 3.2Ghz. That extra 1x multiplier will make a BIG difference.

Instead of spending an insane amount of $ for super expensive ram for the 6300, just to reach 3Ghz+.

That is exactly what I just did, and I got the OC-friendly Patriot 667. So if I can hit 900, like some are claiming, I will have no memory bottleneck and the CPU, NB, and cooling will be the only determining factors. From what I've read everything else is pie compared to getting the memory to behave.

CPU is pie.

The NB is the main issue most people have, followed by the memory 2nd b/c there's nothing less than 1:1 ratio.
