He makes some really great points. In particular Xbox' lack luster streaming and despite it being much more powerful than the 360 backwards compatibility doesn't offer a true smooth FPS? Seriously??

The big issue with Xbone is that they got cocky after the raging success that was the Xbox 360. the Xbox 360 gave gamers all the features they never knew they wanted.

    1st party wireless gamepads
Amazingly intuitive and feature-rich dashboard that can be accessed at any time
Backwards compatability for many games out of the box
Universal chat and party system for online
A plethora of downloadable demos and XBLA titles
Being able to turn the console on and off with the wireless gamepad
    Achievements
The ability to set game defaults for prefered chsracter colours and controls

These are all basic things that console gamers take for granted, but back in 2005 The Xbox 360 may as well been made of the futre and blowjobs.

The Xbone just offered more of the same plus TV TV TV TV SPROTS TV TV SPORTS TV

I don't feel that the Xbox One actually improved on much of anything from the Xbox 360. They just ported those features over and put them on top of a new clumsy UI. I guess it allows you to record game footage and turn the system on/off by yelling at the Kinect but even that has essentially been dropped moving forward.
The UI is weird, there are too many steps required for simple tasks, and there are little to no worthwhile exclusives. Then you have to factor in that just about every multiplatform game is better on the PS4. At the very least they're practically never worse.
Mine barely gets any use and when it does it's usually just so I can yell for my TV to turn off and on.
I'm hoping the Scorpio brings a new UI and some additional software features on top of more horsepower. The 360 was such a great console but this one has been the exact opposite. It's the single most disappointing console I've owned since the freakin' Jaguar. At least I actually played the Wii here and there.

I would argue your last line is wrong, only because Microsoft was more than just complacent, they were actively trying to screw over their own infrastructure.

The Xbone launched without much of that list. It was worse than (or barely equal) to the 360 in every meaningful measure, only it had a different interface and more computing power.

In the 3 painful years since, they finally have feature parity with the xbox 360 (missing a few odds and ends). 3 years later, we finally have the xbox one they should have launched with.

I am certain many of the xbox360's well loved features were not available at launch, however, that doesn't excuse the xbox one's lackluster feature set. Then, the arrogant bastard in charge of Xbox (now fired) tried to suggest running both the 360 and the Xbone at the same time was an adequate substitute for missing features on the Xbone.

I'll give MS one thing - they've been doing a lot to 'right' their ship and if I were in the market for a console today, it'd likely be an Xbone over a PS4.

Still hoping Xbox will evolve into more of a software platform: have 'official' hardware (created/supported by MS), boutique brand XBoxes (Alienware, CyberPower, etc), and a DIY platform (approved parts lists, etc). Basically what Valve tried doing with their Steam Machines.

The UI was the biggest WTF moment for me. It's somewhat improved from launch condition, though. I guess it's a combination of making the OS completely portable with everything being a separate app and trying to stick in more obnoxious advertising.

Xbox one has no games, UI sucks but it is the best bluray player you can buy. Its like watching history repeat itself in reverse... though the disparity wasn't nearly as bad as what we are seeing now.

IMO Microsoft's dumb decisions with scorpio has already hurt xbox 1 more then it will help. Sales for the ps4 slowed immediately after the neo/pro was leaked (because people waited for the improved version) but it only took them like 3 months to get it to the market. Yet Scorpio is taking more then a year to launch....

Personally I've been enjoying the XB1 since day one. I thought it was great day one. I use my XB1 way more then my PS4. My only real complaint is I would've liked the internal hard drive to have been replaceable. I've probably have spent more time and money on the XB1 in three years then did the entire 360 era. For me its been a blast, I've been able to play old 360 games that I didn't get around to last generation like Lost Odyssey.

Maybe for value, but not for quality. The Xbox One colorspace is borked and has been since launch. You can choose between crushing or washing out blacks, but there's no sweet spot because RGB is broken.

What have they done? And why would you choose the XB1 over the PS4? I just sold my 1TB XB1 while it still had some value after using it almost exclusively to watch YouTube and Time Warner in the living room. Maybe I'm old-old school because my first console was the Atari 2600 in 1980 at 8 years old, but consoles first and foremost have always been about games. Things like the media features are just icing on the cake. The XB1 lacks with respect to games relative to the PS4. Most of the stuff I wanted to play on the Xbox was also available for PC. IMHO. :)

At this point the only advantages the Xbox has over the PS4 are the UHD Blu-Ray functionality of the S model and backward compatibility for old games. I guess you might also prefer the controller, although there are 3rd party controllers that mimic whichever you want. I have some friends that are serious competition-wise and they swear that the Xbox has the better players in nearly everything, but that's pretty anecdotal.

Their reversal on the kinect requirement, online drm, commitment to 360 compatibility, Gold Deals (usually superior to PS Live's deals), and solid hardware refreshes (UHD Bluray) spring to my mind on how they're righting their ship.

As for the games argument - yeah, I could see that. PS4's got some strong first party titles, and the one XBone exclusive I was looking forward to (ReCore) ended up being a bit of a clunker. I'm probably looking at it more as a media unit than a games console tbh.

Definitely a nice media unit. But with a PS4, AppleTV, and a Roku it was sort of redundant. I also liked the backwards compatibility of the XB1. Was nice to have access to Red Dead Redemption.

I do appreciate that MS does seem to be trying to improve with the Xbox One. Hopefully Scorpio will bring some serious advances. I'm curious if the Kinect will still work with it. I still think the Kinect could have been something great had they not increased the price of the system by $100 for it.

The complaints in the first couple posts equally apply to the PS4 as well (except the responsiveness of the UI). I agree the XB 1 was not a good step up from the 360. Owning both, I don't understand why PS4 is getting a pass in this thread vs. the XB1. They are so similar, other than the UI (which who the heck spends much time in the interace), I really don't see how anyone can declare one so superior to the other.

For me, the PS4 gets more of a pass because it was $100 cheaper and it played the same games that the Xbox One played, only slightly better. After sucking initially on the PS3, the PSN store and social UI is now much easier to use than the Xbox One's mess of one. I feel like Sony saw what was wrong with the PS3 and made subtle improvements to give us the PS4.
In the case of the Xbox One, it was more like a step backward or a lateral move at best. That combined with the higher price tag makes it especially easy to eye roll.
The PS4 is still a disappointment in the grand scheme of things, too. I feel this generation has been the smallest leap over the last to date. Hell, the Switch reinforces that even more.

Scorpio is a chance for MS to course correct and deliver a true next gen system...they made a few missteps with Kinect etc and they need Scorpio to make people forget...I think MS also needs to invest in some really great exclusives...that to me determines the success or failure of a console moreso then anything else...PS is crushing them with Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, Nioh etc

Had to turn it way down...dont see why it was necessary to yell and speak with that much emotion and anger over a video game console lol

I have both day launch consoles. Already out the box the PS4 could be say verticle, power supply built in and being smaller. My Xbox is collecting dust because of all these bad ass games on PS4.

360 was golden age. Xbone was and still is a disaster. Feature regression in every way, arrogance on-parade. MS never recovered. Now the Xbox division and it's grinning, say-anything male cheerleader Phil Spencer are getting on their hands and knees to court PC gamers, after laughing them off for 17 years. Trying to increase marketshare and mindshare with gimmicks that really only amount to a value add for existing Xbone owners. It's not working. MS has burned every bridge. Scorpio remaining vapor for so long is also costing them.

Anyhoo, look no further than this moment in time snapshot to see the disparity in console land:

PS4 will be enjoying Horizon Zero Dawn.
    Switch will be enjoying Zelda.
Xbone will be enjoying...? CoD re-runs I suppose.

I got into this with someone before. Upon reflection, this has happened in every generation with the exception of PS1 to PS2, and arguably NES to SNES. Corporate greed, I guess. They never learn.
