Major Oblivion bug

As per the thread at the Elder Scrolls Forums, basically what this bug does is increase the NUMBER of the level of the skill, not the skill itself by X levels.

So if you have 20 Mercantile, and you get a reward that boosts your Mercantile by 5, it will appear not to progress any more UNTIL you reach 25 Mercantile, at which point it will start displaying normally again.

So the reward, is not a reward. All it does, is change the number.

It's BAD, but not as bad as originally thought.

Ok, Ftr guild will wait. I also became a Vamp and didnt know it. Had to go to a later saved game. Lost 2 lvl's

What Gen. Crespin just posted is significant. Speaking from experience, if this information is true it shows the origin of the problem was the person doing the quest scripting and the test scripts themselves.

I'll pull the curtain back a little bit. I'm assuming that each skill has a level and experience table. Probably it's also broken up into smaller tables. So you've got your Bethesda Softworks employee who slept through a meeting and forgets that instead of updating dbo.skill.mercentille.experience he mistakenly updates dbo.skill.mercentille.level. He forgets that the game calculates all the stats from the experience column, rather than the level column. Hence the boost is just cosmetic and not actual.

So how did this slip through the cracks in the QA process? The test script probably only checked the character info screen, rather than doing a table dump to check the actual values. That would have shown the level increased, but not the skill experience.

If you're seeing this in multiple quests, my bet is that the same level designer did 'em all. You can blame QA, but you've got to first point the finger of shame at the designer.

There are also major bugs in the theifs guild as well. I found 2 bugs that would halt the total progress of the Thief Guild quests.

This could be viewed as by design: Quests that boost the skill cap, not the the skill.

I agree. I have done some of these quests... and I didn't know about this bug. It seemed my Mercantile was taking forever to level up and wasn't moving at all. I just thought maybe it really took that long to level up because Mercantile sucks. Later I thought it was because I wasn't using haggle. I guess it was the bug though, but same for me, after a while it started to work again... and I have trained my Mercantile skill at least 5 times with a vendor. So I don't think this is something that is permanent, but still a crappy bug.

Am I the only one whos done most of these quests and hasnt had a single problem like you guys are describing?

i've been playing this game for like the last 24 hours straight (exaggeration, but a lot)...

at work now, and i need to get some sleep... i've been told this is one of the greatest RPGs ever made... that they did everything right... but so far... i'm liking FABLE better...

but hey i'm not all big into RPGs, so what do i know...

anyway, do the graphics seem all that spectacular to you guys?

i guess i'm going through the game a lot slower, i've finished like 2 quests... hopefully i'm safe from the bugs

this game is so huge, i don't know what i'm doing

Man, it's so frustrating hearing about major bugs like these that can potentially mess up your game. I've been playing for about 20hrs and havent done the quests mentioned, but it makes me feel like I need to stop playing until the bugs are fixed :(

I'm sure Bethseda will sort it out asap (if only that were soon enough!)

Either this bug didn't effect me, or I played through the "stopped" levels and came out the other side fine. I did the Dar-Ma quest (or whatever) and was rewarded the mercantile levels, but didn't know about the bug and kept playing. Last night I kept an eye on things and it leveled up while I was in a transaction and when I looked it really had. I'm still really low level, but it's working fine now...

Same here. I did that quest without a problem. Didnt notice if i got my skill upgraded or not, but i'm at least 15 hours past that and have had no problems. Perhaps its a bug that only appears under certain conditions.

Similar to the missing guy in the well on the cheyindal mages guild recommendation quest on 360 which my brother found the other day. Had a save a few minutes before doing the quest and the guy wasnt in the well no matter how many times he reloaded. Went back to a save a couple of hours before that point and replayed till he got to do that mission again and there he was. Wierd

The OP needs to update this thread.

The bug isn't permanent!

If any of you actually took the link in the first post, and read the thread, you'd see this. First, the community got together and someone made his own mod to fix the bug! I acted too quickly.. ran to my Best Buy and exchanged my X360 version for the PC version. When I got back, the community found that the bug is not permanent. Think of it as an advance or loan on your stats, with 0% interest. For example, you finish a quest and are awarded +5 blade, you go from 25 blade to 30 blade. Effectively, you're at 30 blade, but the game has statistical record for level 25 blade... To compensate, you'll have to statistically raise your level (in the background) to 30, from there on, your stat is unfrozen. Capiche?

[edit] It seems some have already figured this out. I guess it doesn't hurt to reiterate.

ok, so does this mean that it is intentional design and we needn't worry about it? or does this mean that it *is* a bug and we *need* that mod to fix this??
If that mod *is* required to fix this can you give a link to it??

I've only made it to lv5 and haven't done much in the game yet, but I'd hate to spend a bunch of time on it and find out I screwed up my save game and have to start all over.

thanks

I mean that it is a bug, just not of the "major" caliber.

The patch is here: http://www.digitalgallery.dk/stuckskillfix.zip

Move the file into your Oblivion data folder. Load the launcher, and select "Data Files" to enable the patch.

Hehe, don't thank me, thank Laurina! He/She made the patch.. just amazing. :)

Hopefully the OP updates this thread to include the patch in the first post.

Well, after buying and selling 8000 gold worth of stuff, my Mercantile skill is finally moving again. I'm still pissed, but not as pissed as before. My stuck acrobat skill is also starting to move as well now.

I did all the fighters guild quests and my mercantile is still going up, strange.

This is not really a big bug thankfully.

Same problem for me :(
glad I found this thread, will try the fix posted and let you know.
I have not done the mercantile one (have not found it yet) but I did the fighters guild rats one (+1 acrobatic now locked).

Another one to look out for: Hand to Hand.
Outside the arena is some dudes fighting, if you watch them for a bit it adds +5 to hand to hand skill. I did this and the found my hand to hand locked at the very start of 51. it will not budge. (hand to hand is one of my major skills haha. yes weird :( ) Assuming this reward has the same "flag" that tells the game the skill is increased but locks it out. No problems with gray princes stats though.

Dar ma: mercantile + 5, locks skill
Fighters guild rats: acrobatics +1, locks skill
watching fighters outside arena: hand to hand +5, locks skill.
gray prince: a few things +3, not locked!

During the main quest line, if you prevent someone from dying, he rewards you by giving you an increase to your block, blade, and heavy armor skill.

So am I now perminently crippled for the rest of the game???

And people are complaining about a stupid infinite gold exploit.

my blade and heavy armor got stuck when I did that, so I just typed ShowClassMenu and reentered my class, although it messed with all my stats I don't care anymore, If I run into any more leveling bugs I'm just going to cheat and level the affected skill to 100.

(I would test it first to see if you are actually stuck)

Oh and by the way the gray princes training or darkbrotherhood blessing shouldn't affect anyone because they don't dirrectly affect your skills, if you look into your modifiers, like blade boost you should see the gray princes training as one of them.

I must be lucky or something. I did the fighters guild rat one and the save the merchants daughter one and both are skilling up just fine. Now I wonder if the fact that I paid for a round of 5 skillups caused it to unlock. People may want to try that to see if it unsticks it. But none of my skills are broken and I've done several of the quests listed!

Shrug

Read the rest of the linked thread. Yeah they start working again later down the road after what you normally do in game raises the skill enough to have actually EARNED that skill lvl... Weird but eh... that's probably why some of the 10-20 lvls felt harder then they needed to be.

I have been burned badly by that BUG.
My biggest problem now is the fact I lost ALL my Willpower.
As you know Willpower controls Magicka Regen.
I has in the high 70's for will power. Now I am at 6.
I have 398 Magicka and with Willpower of 6 it takes about 2 mins to regen from 0. This is fucking me up. I am a Battle Mage, Magic is my main weapon.

The Number in the stats is RED, but I can't pray because my Infamy is so high and it seems Dispel of 75 isn't working either, so the only thing I can think off is that it's part of this bug. WTF!

Is my only option to "advskill Willpower 100" in consol?

LOL dude
if its in red it is not part of this bug. You are diseased, cursed or something. You need to be able to visit a shrine, so do a few good deads and get your self cured. What you are experiencing has nothing to do with this bug they mention in this thread.

Get my self cured....
How, I can't pray at a shrine. My Infamy is 560+
I have used Disple Expert level and it's not fixed.
How can I check out whats doing my harm?
I checked out all the Active Magic on me and only the things that are bad, come with my birth sign.

Thats why I said it's Bug related.
It was red and this bug has caused it to be stuck there even after I have cured it.

Is there any other option besides praying to dismiss the Disease posibility?

LOL alot of diseases etc I was not able to cure with a spell. Don't go calling it a bug if you put yourself into a situation that you can't cure yourself. I'm not sure if there are alternative methods to cure one's self but have you tried the shepard's pie or potions?

I have tried everything I can think of.
I would not jump to the conclusion that it's a bug if I haden't already tryed, praying, using spells, eating 1 of every single positive ingreediant, drining 20+ potions.

Nothing I have done so far has fixed this BS.
I am ready to cheat to solve this cause it's hurting the game for me.

If your stats are red, and you don't have any diseases, then they've been damaged. Some enemies (Wisps, for example) permanently damage your statistics when they attack you. You can restore damaged statistics by either praying at a chapel or using an appropriate Restore Attribute potion.

ps majin I think that not being able to pray is probably just one downside of having +560 infamy. :p
I have had stats lowered, as john said, by an enemy attack, but it did not show in the constant effects menu. I had a red agility stat, praying fixed it. I also recently had a red willpower stat (not much fuss as I'm a sneak kill person) and I made a restore willpower potion and it cured it, as john also said. Hope it works for you.

On a sidenote how in the heck do you get a 560 infamy.
MURDER!

I racked up a 225,000+ Bounty.
I went around and murdered the populas of every single city, village, town in the game.

Then after a few days people started to respawn and I went back and murdered the guard of the city again.

Then after a few days I did it again.

I have 3300+ days spent in jail because I decided to stop the sensless murder, I realized I had killed the same Guard in Bruma 8 times in a row.... When you go on that kind of a killing spree getting 500+ Imfamy is easy!

ok i got the mercantile bug at 36 and i trained it up to 52 and sold 55,000GP worth of stuff and no increases. i installed the patch linked above and no joy. i tried the "advskill mercantile 1" and that works but still no incremental increases when i sell stuff. this didn't happen with my other character :(

on the fighters guild/rats level i chose to tell the truth and you get a speechcraft upgrade that doesn't freeze, rather than an acrobatics one that does. so you don't need to worry about the FG thread, just tell the truth!

anyone else noticed that when you have the skeleton key it adds 40 to your security (mine went from 22 to 62) but you still never get any more skill-ups unless you dump it out of your inventory! bah, what a crap prize!
