Major Hard Drive Problem

While cleaning up my build today I had a small problem after I put everything back together.

After cleaning up my build and re-managing the cable I turned my desktop on to be welcomed with the amazing sounds of pops and to a small spark coming from the inside of my computer.

During the startup the computer told me that it could not detect the hard drive so I knew that was where the sparks were coming from.

Upon further examination of the hard drive, on the bottom right below where the SATA power connector is marked where the problem happened. When trying to see if I could retrieve any data by using a SATA/IDE to USB adapater I had I was sadly mistaken.

I was wondering if there was any way to get my personal files off of my hard drive and onto a new one?

I was also told that it might be possible to swap PCBs and then see if it could work, seeing as how I think the main problem is that the HDD will not get power, but is still able to transer data.

I apologize for any gramamtical errors, I was in a hurry to type this.

I only thing that might work is swapping pcb's but it has to be the same as the one that is on there.

So, in other words I must pick up another Seagate 500 gig?

Or would it be possible if I took it into a local shop and they could possibly do it for me without paying for a totally new one?

With those drives being so inexpensive these days I would imagine shop time would about cover the price of a new one, if you could actually find a willing shop.

Keep in mind something shorted, either the board on the drive, possibly the voice coil coil on the arm. There is every possibility the data you thought you had is pooched.

Naturally drive recovery is always an option but it's doubtful you have a few grand worth of data on there to even consider that.

Luck;)

If you are going to attempt to swap a circuit board on a recent Seagate hard drive you will want to find a drive with these characteristics (check the sticker on the drive):
same model number and capacity
same firmware version
same country "site code"
manufactured as close a possible to the same date, preferably within a week or two

Be warned, this does not always guarantee a match but these are the variables that maximize the likelihood.

A harddrive that has been shorted like that will likely never work again, at least not with conventional help. I would cut my losses. Sorry to hear.
