:confused:recently got wireless router, main rig is hard-wired to it, and laptop is wi-fi...

they can see each other on my workgroup, but cant access between them. no windoze firewalls on either...next step? thanks in advance.

What are their IP Addresses?

Can you ping desktop from laptop, vise versa?

ip's are off by one number, through the wireless router, and cant ping either...next?

"cant ping either"
that would be a problem

"no windoze firewalls on either"
Any other firewalls at all ?
Router is doing DHCP?

"they can see each other on my workgroup, but cant access between them"
How are you trying to access the PC? You should go to Start>Run and type in \\PCName_or_IP\SharedFolderName

I usually try to ping by IP first and then by hostname, you can also try the following:

Start > Run > \\Computer-Name

i was trying to get to the main one through my network places, i tried to get it from run, but network path not found message popped up.

this is happening on both sides, desktop and laptop give the same errors.

I'm assuming both machines can access the internet right now.

Post the IP info

Private IP Address
Gateway
Subnet mask

Start > Run > CMD
ipconfig /all

What things are shared out on the machines?
printer, folders ?
What are the share names?

Same username/password on each machine? (or is the guest account enabled?)

ipconfig on main rig:

dhcp:yes
ip:192.168.1.100
subnet:255.255.255.0
gateway:192.168.1.1

lappy:

dhcp:yes
ip:192.168.1.101
subnet:255.255.255.0
gateway:192.168.1.1

db, only music and photos trying to be shared, and i thin it is the same user passwords and names...does that matter? i have a wifi printer cabled to the main rig, and i can print from my laptop

also, how do i set myself up as an administrator, my pcs both keep telling me to call me.

ideally then you should be able to (from the lappy) go to start, run and type in \\192.168.1.100\<insert share name here>

it should open up the shared folder on the main rig

YOu should have the same username/password on each rig....

why?

say your signed onto the laptop as 'bill' with password 'abc123' and you have an account on the main rig as 'bill' with no password.

When you try to access the main rig, your telling it you are bill with password abc123, but the main rig doesnt know who bill - abc123 is, it knows who bill is though

usernames/passwords should match on each machine, unless you have the guest account enabled, then anyone could access the shares...

hey good call with the no password thing - if I recall you can't share files in XP w/ a user that has no password

well, i don't get it, i tried it today, and the main pc popped right up. i did it through run, but it's also working under network places now. thanks guys.
