Mafia II

So the Mafia 2 preorders are up, and there are some cool DLC items depending on which store you decided to pre-order Mafia 2.

I am leaning for the Gamestop with the Vegas and War Hero pack. The only question I have is I also would like to get the Collector's Edition. Does anyone know if the Collector's Edition (which comes with it's own DLC) will also have the Vegas and War Hero pack?

Why can't they put all of those in the CE? It's annoying when the stores get content and there's no way to get all of it buy just buying the game/ce.

The way it sometimes work is that you get a store specific coupon-code for a downloadable content. I'd imagine it could be similar here, too. You pick up a CE from Gamestop (or whatever) with a coupon-code inside, and upon entering it you'll be prompted to download whatever extras you get. Regardless, I'd love it if the companies would stop doing this shit.

I'm pretty sure they will release it on Steam, nowadays you would be missing out on a lot of sales if you didn't distribute via Steam. I want this game, probably the only single player game I would actually buy this year, but I will only buy it via digital distribution. Only time I want to waste time going to a actual store is when my TV blows up. other than that, fuck brick and mortar :p

The new Physx video is out.
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nvidia-physx-mafia-ii/100588

Kind of sucks, I just moved to ATI (5850) from my 9800gx2. Why on earth can't they simpl do that stuff on a cpu? Most people have dual-quad cores and even more coming now, no reason it can't be done.

Maybe they'll have some kind of patch/way to enable the cpu to do it.

whatever happened to cuda drivers for ati cards? I seem to remember all sorts of news that physx was going to work on radeon with free api, obviously ati isn't gonna do jack, but I figured there would be at least hacked drivers by now.

This is something that has pissed me off for a while. I blogged about this on my website. We're basically starting to see advanced physics effects being offered by developers as nvidia gets onboard with the way its meant to be played program, but what we find is that we're often left with only 2 options, all effects on, or all effects off.

Sorry to rock the boat but some of us have fast quad cores and some of the effects getting disabled without dedicated GPU/PPU support can easily be run on a decent CPU, my blog uses Batman AA as an example, you could force CPU PhysX effects and a lot of the effects ran rather well, for example smashing floor tiles, bullet sparks, smashing pillars/walls, Im fairly sure even the paper would be fine on it's own.

The other thing that pisses me off is that B:AA ran at about 20-25fps with CPU PhysX on my machine which is not far off playable, but was only running at about 30-40% usage, I'd be willing to bet if that was optimised to 90%+ it would be playable on any decent quad core CPU.

Nvidia playing dirty in my opinion, they'll do anything to corner the market on PhysX, I commend ATI for not rising to the bait and keeping PhysX support out of their drivers, it'll only benefit us in the long run.

Fortunately PhysX has not yielded anything spectacular. The only thing I see worthwhile in Mafia2 is the bathroom type glass walls that they fire at. The windows I dont care...and I did not see anything great in the car explosions.

San Andreas had it, but only if you shot it a whole bunch of times, or square on the gas cap.

lol seriously... But this feature is so old anyway. I believe the original GTA3 had it, or at least Vice City did. Why advertise it like it's something new or revolutionary?

Here's what I don't understand.

2K claims that a GTX 480 coupled with a GTX 280 is the optimum setup. Is it true that a GTX 280 would provide a superior PhysX performance than, say, a 9800gt? I thought that PhysX was PhysX? Isn't the PhysX processor the same on all Nvidia cards?

But anyhow, I love my GTX 480... love it... and these requirements only make me love it more.

Physx is ran on the GPU itself, not some dedicated Physx chip. The faster the GPU, the faster the physics calculations will be and the more it can handle before being bogged down.

game looks great to bad its gonna probaly be amd handicapped with the nvidia way its meant ot be crap.

Good looking considering that's 360 footage. Can't wait see it maxed out on the PC. :)

Looked like ps3 footage. Circle, Circle, Triangle I believe he said.

Also. I'm not sure what's accessible or not but that world looks pretty huge to me.

I've just installed my old 9800gt alongside my GTX 480, and in Arkham Asylum, with PhysX maxed out, I'm not noticing any difference at all.

I have a GTX 275, but it's the nosiest card I've ever installed, so no way am I going to put that alongside my GTX 480. At least not right now. I might do for Mafia 2 though. I'll probably experiment with it and see what happens.

I'd have to say that Mafia 2 is my most anticipated title right now. It's the next big one for me, since I'm not a Starcraft fan, and don't care about that game.

I'm also pretty stoked for Civ 5, chiefly because of the new battle system, which was modeled on the style of Panzer General. I fear that Civ 5 is going to be one of those rare, rare games that will just own me. What else is coming in September? The new Codemasters F1 game? I'm pretty stoked for that as well.

batman is a bad example i think, here's my experience with it, settings : 1920*1080 2x A everything maxed physx HIGH

gtx260 : drops down to 20fps ( or lower ) on the very first boss fight due to intense smoke effects

gtx470 : much better

gtx470 + 260 : about 2-3fps difference according to the benchmark ( I'm at work right now so i don't have any benchmark screenshots handy )

capcom claimed the same thing about dark void, they said that the dedicated gpu card for high PHYSX should be a gtx260 or faster, not a 8800gt

Mafia SHOULD run well on my setup and SHOULD be a good game, or else both of my cards will be sold for like 100$

Okay, installing my GTX 275, and using that for PhysX, alongside my GTX 480, actually made the difference.

I could feel the difference right away. I'm kind of surprised that the GTX 275 was able to do what the 9800 gt couldn't.

Anyhow, looks like I'm ready for Mafia 2 now. Good thing I didn't sell my 275.

I think you've made a mistake here.

I also tested Arkham Asylum with various setups. My minimum frames in the various benchmark tests didn't vary at all.

With a stand-alone GTX 480 (no dedicated GPU for PhysX) my minimum frames were 30. When I installed my old 9800 gt and used it as a dedicated PhysX card, my minimum frames were still 30. Likewise when I installed my old GTX 275 and used that as a dedicated PhysX card - I was still getting a minimum of 30 fps.

Okay, but here's where you've gone wrong. You're basing this on the numbers, and in this case the numbers are lying.

I didn't notice much of a difference using my 9800 gt as a dedicated PhysX card (there was a difference, but it wasn't profound), but I certainly noticed a difference using my GTX 275 as a dedicated PhysX card.

Suddenly, the game was running much more smoothly. My frames had always been well above 60, but somehow the game just didn't feel right. With the GTX 275 installed, however, the game just suddenly became silky smooth. In this case, clearly the numbers were lying.

I think it's interesting that 2K is saying the same thing about Mafia 2. They don't really want us using anything less than a GTX 480, and a GTX 280 as a dedicated PhysX card, in order to get the full PhysX experience. Based on my Arkham tests, I'd have to concur with that.

PhysX is still pretty minor to the atmosphere, but we're still in the early days. When I disabled it in Arkham I felt like something was missing. Clearly, Arkham Asylum has made the best use of PhysX to date. Who knows, maybe Mafia 2 will be a watershed title in which PhysX will finally push the visuals over the top. All it takes is one title.

Myself, I'm kind of happy that I have the recommended setup for the full PhysX experience. It's nice to have met a set of outrageous requirements for once.

So they want you to buy $700 worth of graphics equipment to play a $60 game?

No wonder the console market is out growing the PC market.
