Just put it in and see how it works. Maybe you accidently managed to unlock hidden cores

While I would not try something like this with a video card, normally all PCBs are covered with solder stop (that is what gives the PCB the color by the way). How do you think the components are assembled in the factory? Usually reflow soldering is used, which is effectively is the same as an oven, just a little more controlled.

I know how boards are made "in the factory". This thread is IS NOT about how cards are assembled at THE FACTORY it's about how to fix a damaged video card.

Boards in the FACTORY start out CLEAN with NO other components with proper support for the components on the bottom of the card and VERY PRECISE component placement, solder paste placement and TEMPERATURE CONTROL.

They definitely DO NOT use TOASTER OVENS to heat up boards at the factory.

Just because the "theory" is the same, doesn't mean it would work at home for this situation.

Yep, if it was a clean single sided PCB that I needed SMT components on, I'd toaster oven it with solder paste, but this is not even close to being the same situation.

With pads less than 2mm apart, even WITH solder stop, it's quite easy to short connections with manual solder paste placement on a board that already has old solder on the pads.

I wouldn't worry about the toaster causing things to fall off. Plenty of people bake their cards and fix broken connections, and I haven't heard anyone saying that everything suddenly fell off the PCB.

If you're too worried to try that, try stress testing it to see if anything weird happens. It'll probably run fine without doing anything.
 
So I finally got a chance to take the card apart and take some photos of the actual damage.

I really appreciate everyones help. I have been battling problems with this card since February and I am exhausted. AceGoober, thank you for your amazingly generous offer. I would definitely have to find an expert to solder on new parts.

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles. Based on the pictures you have provided you are actually missing 3 SMD capacitors. By just looking at them there is no way to guess their ratings, but if you send the card to an expert they would be able to measure the ones already on the board and tell you what is missing.

I don't normally do this as I am quite busy, but I have a large background as an EE and with soldering. If you are willing to ship the card to me I am willing to tell you exactly what parts you will need to order and install them for you at no cost. You will be responsible for ordering all parts and all shipping costs.

All work would be professionally done. The original solder will be removed and new solder will be applied to the new parts for a perfect contact. There should be enough room to do the work without rooming the ram sinks, but it would be a lot easier to work with if the one was removed.

That's to fix cracked solder joints underneath the GPU that cannot be accessed. And it's only a last ditch effort to fix a borked video card with no visible damage. When you have nothing to lose, it's worth the risk.

If you heat up a card hot enough to REFLOW solder paste, it'll most likely also liquefy the existing solder joints... well maybe if it's an ROHS card and you use lead solder paste, the existing solder joints won't liquefy.

This card has easily accessible damaged components and most probably has no other damage other than the knocked off SMT resistors and capacitor. Risking damaging the whole card some more by popping in a toaster oven to reflow solder on the missing components is a huge risk in my books. I'd much rather put a normal soldering iron to the SMT components than try to "bake" the card whole.
 
If the part that came off is undamaged, you can probably just put it back on. Find a friend who isn't a gorilla with a soldering iron if you don't think you can do it yourself. It is precision work and, to some extent, preparation is the key. Use tweezers and have everything ready and in position - you don't want to be re-heating and re-positioning.

If the board or part are damaged it gets harder...

I broke off a cap/resistor whatever it is, that size on my old x1900xt as soon as i bought it, trying to install a AC Acceleron heatsink fan. It worked flawlessly for years, even overclocked nicely (mightve overclocked better if i didnt damage it but we'll never know), up until i sold my old system a year or two ago to my mate. Funnily enough the card died not even a month after i sold it so i replaced it with a new one for my mate.

The one that broke off mine was closer to the core though, yours would be a memory cap. I think worst case scenario it might limit your memory overclock. I wouldnt worry about it unless you start seeing artifacts at stock or experience random crashes.

When I broke a component off my Ti4200, I had to trade a whole extra videocard to a guy to get my card fixed. I regret that.
 
I feel sorry for you...

This is one of the reasons why I don't try to mod Videocards .. something could always go wrong, and boom.. you just lost $300+...
 
I tested it extensively last night. I ran benchmarks including Furmark, Stalker COP, Heaven and Crysis. Played a few games and performance is exactly where it should be with no artifacts. I wonder if the cooler that broke it is also helping to keep it stable with low temps.

Either way, my plan is to use it until it breaks or buy a MSI R6950 Twin Frozr II (or something else with an aftermarket cooler) and use that as my primary card. I was planning on getting a second 6950 for Crossfire when Skyrim comes out anyways.

Thanks for all the responses and all the generous offerings of parts and labor but quite frankly, I've had problems with this thing since I got it and I just want to play some freakin games. Bad luck sucks but I happens.
 
i think video cards are too advanced to fool with replacing heatsinks. alot of times the heatsink does alot of damage even if you follow all the steps correctly (artic cooing?).

although the cooler i put on a 4850 was pretty nice, i wouldn't feel comfortable doing it on a 6950. i actually prefer they are kept fully covered like they are being made now. makes it hard to replace with an aftermarket cooler, but i think the stock cooler does a good enough job and keeps it quiet enough ;)
